Germany’s Yamisi Ogunleye Wins Gold in Women’s Shot Put at Paris Olympics

Germany’s Yamisi Ogunleye clinched the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the Paris Olympics, delivering a stellar performance that culminated in a winning throw of 20.00 meters on her final attempt. Ogunleye’s exceptional throw outperformed the competition, marking a significant achievement in her athletic career.

In a close contest, New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche secured the silver medal with a throw of 19.86 meters, achieved on her fifth attempt, which also set a new personal best for her. Meanwhile, China’s Song Jiayuan earned the bronze medal with a strong performance, throwing 19.32 meters.

Ogunleye’s victory in Paris adds to her impressive list of accomplishments. Earlier in 2024, she won a silver medal at the World Indoor Championships and also secured a bronze medal at the European Championships in Rome, showcasing her consistent form and competitive edge on the international stage.

The competition saw disappointment for the United States, with Jade Ross finishing just outside the podium in fourth place. Ross’s teammate, Raven Saunders, faced an early exit after failing to advance past the first three rounds of throws.

Gong Lijiao of China, the reigning Tokyo 2020 gold medalist and a seasoned competitor with a history of Olympic success—including silver in London and bronze in Beijing—finished in fifth place, rounding out the top contenders in a fiercely contested event.
