Sol Bamba, the former Leeds United, Cardiff City, and Ivory Coast defender, has died at the age of 39, shocking the football world. Bamba, who had overcome non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 during his time at Cardiff, was working as a technical director at Turkish club Adanaspor at the time of his passing.
Adanaspor announced Bamba’s death in a statement: “Our technical director Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before the match against Manisa on Friday, was taken to hospital and unfortunately lost his battle for life there. Our condolences to his family and our community.”
Bamba’s career spanned several clubs across Europe, including Paris St-Germain, Dunfermline, Hibernian, Leicester City, and Middlesbrough. He was a key figure in Cardiff City’s promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and became a fan favorite at the Welsh club.
Cardiff City expressed their deep sadness at the news, describing Bamba as a “club legend” and stating, “As a player and coach, Sol’s impact on our football club was immeasurable. He was a hero to all of us, a leader in every dressing room and a true gentleman.”
Leeds United, where Bamba served as captain from 2015 to 2016, also paid tribute: “We are devastated to learn of the news that former captain Sol Bamba has passed away. Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts.”
Bamba’s resilience was highlighted in 2021 when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma while at Cardiff. He returned to playing just four months later, announcing he was cancer-free following chemotherapy treatment.
