Italian authorities on Sunday recovered six decomposed bodies off the coast of Sicily, believed to be migrants who went missing in a recent shipwreck, according to local media reports.
The bodies were discovered near Sicily’s southwestern coast and subsequently transported to Lampedusa, an Italian island approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles) away. Officials suspect these individuals were part of a group that departed from Libya on September 1 and encountered tragedy at sea.
This discovery is linked to an incident earlier in the week when the Italian Coast Guard rescued seven Syrian nationals from a half-sunken boat southwest of Lampedusa on Wednesday. The survivors recounted a harrowing tale of their journey, revealing that 21 of the original 28 passengers, including three children, had fallen into the sea due to rough weather conditions.
One survivor, who remained unnamed, told Italian media, “We left Sabrata, Libya, on Sunday afternoon. Onboard were all Sudanese and Syrians. The boat capsized after a day at sea… Everyone fell into the water because the weather was bad and the sea was rough. We tried to save our companions but there was nothing we could do.”
Lampedusa Mayor Filippo Mannino described the discovery as “another tragedy” in the ongoing migration crisis. “We hoped, in the hours following the rescue of the 7 Syrians, that the coast guard patrol boats would be able to find the missing alive. But the passing of time has made us lose all hope,” Mannino said, as reported by local media.
This incident underscores the perilous nature of the central Mediterranean Sea crossing, one of the world’s deadliest migration routes. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 2,500 migrants died or went missing attempting this crossing in 2023, with 1,116 such cases recorded since the beginning of 2024.
Despite these dangers, over 43,000 migrants have reached Italy so far in 2024, though this number represents a decrease from previous years, according to data from Italy’s Interior Ministry.
The ongoing migration crisis remains a contentious political issue in Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, was elected in October 2022 on a platform that promised to reduce the number of migrants making the dangerous journey from Africa to Europe by sea.
As Italian authorities continue their investigation into this latest tragedy, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of irregular migration and the ongoing challenges faced by both migrants and European nations in addressing this complex issue.
