Anglican Priest Abducted by Gunmen in Anambra State, Nigeria

Ven. David Arinze Ajaefobi, an Archdeacon of Oyi Central Archdeaconry and Vicar of St James’ Parish in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, has been abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. The incident occurred at the gate of the church around 9:30 pm on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

According to local sources, the abductors have not established any contact as of the time of filing this report, leaving the community and the Anglican Diocese on the Niger in a state of uncertainty and concern for the safety of Rev. Ajaefobi.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the police in Anambra State, stated that the command had not yet received an official report on the incident. However, a senior police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the abduction to journalists on Sunday.

Rev. Ajaefobi, who was inducted as the vicar of St. James Parish on April 10, 2022, according to a post on the official Facebook page of the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, is a well-respected member of the clergy in the region.

Kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common in various parts of Nigeria, with religious leaders, politicians, and businesspeople often targeted by criminal gangs. The abduction of Rev. Ajaefobi has sent shockwaves through the local community and highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Nigerians.

As the search for the abducted priest continues, the Anglican Church and local authorities are calling for the safe return of Rev. Ajaefobi and urging the government to take decisive action to combat the growing threat of kidnapping in the country.
