Syrian Rebels Find Personal Photo of Assad During Aleppo Palace Raid

Date:

Syrian rebel forces who seized President Bashar al-Assad’s palace in Aleppo last week discovered a personal photograph of the Syrian leader from his younger years, according to the Jerusalem Post, adding an unusual dimension to the opposition’s recent military victories.

The discovery comes amid the most significant rebel advances in years, with opposition forces capturing several cities across northern and southern Syria in a 10-day offensive that began with Aleppo in early December. The rapid territorial gains have prompted unconfirmed reports that Assad fled Damascus, though his office dismissed these as “rumors and false news.”

“The president is following up on his work and national and constitutional duties from the capital,” Assad’s office stated, even as protests emerged in Damascus. The situation reflects growing pressure on the regime as armed opposition groups expand their control across multiple regions.

The military advances mark the most substantial gains in recent years by opposition forces seeking to overthrow Assad’s government, transforming what had been a largely frozen conflict into an active campaign threatening regime strongholds.
