The Ukraine bill, receiving robust backing with 311 votes in favor, now advances to the Senate, accompanied by the Israel aid legislation and two other critical bills—one aimed at providing Taiwan aid and another compelling TikTok’s parent company to divest the app.
In a display of solidarity, lawmakers celebrated the passage of the Ukraine bill by waving Ukrainian flags and cheering. The bill garnered bipartisan support, with 101 Republicans and 210 Democrats voting in favor, showcasing the House of Representatives’ united front on Ukraine.
With a decisive vote of 366-58, the Israel aid bill saw overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle, with 193 Republicans and 173 Democrats voting in favor, highlighting the bipartisan consensus on Israel funding.
Following the Senate’s passage of a comprehensive bill that included foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, along with funding for border security, Speaker Mike Johnson opted for a strategic approach by passing three separate bills for each nation rather than bringing the Senate’s bill to the floor.
The Ukraine aid bill arrives at a pivotal moment in the nation’s conflict with Russia, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizing the urgent need for weapons and supplies to continue the defense against Russian aggression, highlighting the critical nature of Ukraine’s weapons aid.
In a significant move, the House voted to mandate TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app within nine months, with a potential extension to a year, or face a nationwide ban in the U.S. This decision, supported by both the Senate and President Biden, underscores concerns over national security.
Additionally, the House voted to provide $8.12 billion in aid to Taiwan.
