Bangladesh Floods Kill 44 as Monsoon Disaster Leaves More Than One Million Stranded

Date:

Severe monsoon floods and landslides have claimed at least 44 lives across southeastern Bangladesh, leaving more than one million people stranded as emergency responders work to deliver food, drinking water and medical aid to communities cut off by rising waters.

Days of intense rainfall have inundated homes, damaged roads and bridges, and disrupted daily life across several districts, forcing thousands of families into emergency shelters while rescue operations continue.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said the worst affected areas include Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj, where floodwaters have stranded 267,918 households.

At a news briefing in Dhaka, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief KM Ali Reza said flooding has also affected Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali and Brahmanbaria since Aug. 20.

Ali Reza said nearly 2.9 million people from more than 440,000 families have been affected across 357 unions in 50 subdistricts. The ministry confirmed two flood related deaths in its latest national assessment, one in Feni and another in Brahmanbaria.

Reuters, citing Bangladesh disaster authorities, said the overall death toll from flooding and rain triggered landslides has risen to at least 44.

More than 75,600 people and nearly 7,500 livestock have been relocated to 1,534 emergency shelters, while 444 medical teams have been deployed to provide healthcare services in affected districts.

The government has allocated 18.2 million taka in emergency assistance, 13,650 metric tons of rice and 11,000 packages of dry food for relief operations. Officials said additional emergency supplies remain available should conditions deteriorate.

Floodwaters have submerged homes across large parts of southeastern Bangladesh, leaving many families without electricity, clean cooking facilities or access to essential supplies.

“There is still water inside our home and we have no way to cook. The dry food we had has run out, and we spend the nights in the dark with our children because there is no electricity,” Chattogram resident Nurul Islam told Reuters.

Many households are surviving on ready to eat food such as flattened rice, puffed rice and biscuits because kitchens remain underwater. Relief efforts have been slowed by damaged transportation routes, making it difficult for aid workers to reach some of the hardest hit communities.

Army and navy personnel have been using boats to transport food, safe drinking water, medicine and other emergency supplies to isolated villages.

“The government is doing everything possible to support flood victims. Relief, safe drinking water and medical supplies are being distributed, and we urge people whose homes have been inundated to move to the nearest shelter,” Disaster Management and Relief Minister Iqbal Hossain said during a visit to flood affected areas in Chattogram.

The heavy rainfall also triggered landslides in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar earlier this week, killing 16 refugees, including women and children. More than one million Rohingya refugees live in temporary settlements built on vulnerable hillsides that face heightened risks during the annual monsoon season.

Bangladesh experiences widespread flooding almost every year because of its vast river system and low lying terrain. Scientists say rising global temperatures are contributing to more frequent and intense rainfall events, increasing the severity of floods and other weather related disasters across South Asia.

The latest flooding also threatens agriculture, transportation and local commerce at a time when many rural communities are already coping with economic pressures. Prolonged inundation could delay crop harvesting, damage public infrastructure and increase the risk of waterborne diseases, creating additional challenges for recovery efforts in the weeks ahead.

What We Know So Far

Emergency teams continue to reach isolated communities where damaged roads and submerged bridges have slowed relief operations. Authorities are still assessing property losses and infrastructure damage, and the full humanitarian impact is expected to become clearer once floodwaters begin to recede.

What Authorities Are Saying

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief says emergency supplies remain available for immediate deployment, while medical teams continue treating displaced residents. Government officials have urged people in vulnerable areas to remain in evacuation shelters until local authorities determine it is safe to return home.

Why This Matters

The disaster underscores Bangladesh’s growing exposure to increasingly severe monsoon weather. Beyond the immediate loss of life, prolonged flooding threatens food security, public health, education and rural livelihoods, while placing additional pressure on emergency services and humanitarian organizations. The situation also highlights the vulnerability of refugee communities living in temporary shelters that are highly susceptible to landslides during periods of heavy rain.

What Happens Next

Authorities are expected to continue rescue operations, expand humanitarian assistance and conduct detailed damage assessments as water levels change. Government agencies will likely review flood response measures and infrastructure resilience while monitoring weather forecasts for additional rainfall that could complicate recovery efforts.
