A Russian military transport plane crashed into a cliff in annexed Crimea on Tuesday evening, killing all 30 people aboard, Russian state media reported, citing the country’s Defense Ministry.
The Antonov An-26 lost contact with air traffic control around 6 p.m. local time while conducting what officials described as a routine flight over the peninsula. Russian news agency TASS reported the aircraft was carrying 23 passengers and seven crew members, though one account put the crew count at six, leaving the precise total under 30 or 29 unresolved across differing reports.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said preliminary findings pointed to a technical malfunction and that there was no indication the aircraft had come under fire.

The plane crashed roughly 15 miles east of Sevastopol, in the peninsula’s southern Bakhchysarai region, according to Russian officials. Unnamed sources told TASS the aircraft went down after striking a cliff.

The An-26 is a twin engine turboprop aircraft first produced in the Soviet Union, with production spanning from the late 1960s through the mid 1980s according to most accounts, though one source placed the production window slightly later. Tuesday’s crash also highlights the broader vulnerability of Russia’s aging Soviet era aircraft fleet. Western sanctions imposed since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have complicated the acquisition and maintenance of modern Boeing and Airbus aircraft, leaving carriers and military units more dependent on older planes like the An-26. In July, 43 people were killed when an Angara Airlines An-24, a similar Soviet era aircraft, crashed in Russia’s Amur region in the country’s Far East, a crash Russian aviation authorities attributed to a faulty altimeter setting.
Airlines operating these aging aircraft have said the lack of alternatives is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Sergey Zorin, deputy chief executive of Angara Airlines, told Reuters in January 2024 that a quarter of the country’s An-24 and An-26 planes would be retired by 2030 and that operating in a market without modern alternatives was becoming unsustainable without government support.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency has separately targeted An-26 aircraft on the ground at Crimean airbases in recent years, including two destroyed by drone strikes in September, underscoring the aircraft’s dual exposure to both mechanical failure and wartime attack even though officials say Tuesday’s crash showed no signs of hostile action.
