Propane Leak Suspected in Deadly Explosion That Leveled Texas Home, Killing Two

An explosion that leveled a house and claimed the lives of its two occupants in Van Alstyne, Texas, a community just north of Dallas, is believed to have been caused by a propane leak, investigators said Monday.

The blast occurred at approximately 1:19 a.m. when first responders received calls from people reporting a loud “boom” in the area. The explosion was followed by a fire that took several hours to extinguish.

Grayson County Fire Marshal John Weda confirmed that the two occupants of the home were inside at the time of the explosion and their bodies were found among the debris. The remains have been sent to the Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies to determine the exact cause of death.

According to Weda, the home utilized propane appliances, which may have led to the accidental explosion. “This appears to be a possible propane leak occurring inside the structure resulting in the explosion,” he said in a statement.

The Fire Marshal’s Office, in collaboration with the Texas Railroad Commission, has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the precise cause of the leak and the subsequent explosion.

Propane is a flammable gas commonly used for heating, cooking, and other appliances in homes not connected to natural gas lines. Leaks can occur due to faulty installation, damaged gas lines, or malfunctioning appliances, and can lead to dangerous accumulations of gas that can ignite or explode if exposed to a spark or flame.

The tragic incident has left the small community of Van Alstyne, located approximately 55 miles (89 kilometers) north of Dallas, in shock. Neighbors reported feeling the ground shake and hearing a loud noise that sounded like a “sonic boom” at the time of the explosion.

As the investigation continues, local authorities are urging residents who use propane in their homes to ensure that their appliances and gas lines are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The names of the two victims have not been released pending notification of their families. The Grayson County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Texas Railroad Commission are expected to provide updates on the investigation as more information becomes available.

Pentagon Confirms North Korea Has Sent 10,000 Troops to Russia to Fight in Ukraine

In a move that Western leaders say will intensify the nearly three-year war in Ukraine and jolt relations in the Indo-Pacific region, the Pentagon has confirmed that North Korea has sent approximately 10,000 troops to Russia to train and fight within “the next several weeks.”

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh revealed on Monday that some of the North Korean soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine and are believed to be heading for the Kursk border region, where Russia has been struggling to push back a Ukrainian incursion. Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed recent Ukrainian intelligence reports that some North Korean military units were already in the Kursk region.

The addition of thousands of North Korean soldiers to Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II is expected to put more pressure on Ukraine’s weary and overstretched army. It will also stoke geopolitical tensions in the Korean Peninsula and the wider Indo-Pacific region, including Japan and Australia, according to Western officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is keen to reshape global power dynamics, sought to build a counterbalance to Western influence with a summit of BRICS countries, including the leaders of China and India, in Russia last week. He has also sought direct help for the war from Iran, which has supplied drones, and North Korea, which has shipped large amounts of ammunition, according to Western governments.

NATO Secretary-General Rutte told reporters in Brussels that the North Korean deployment represents “a significant escalation” in Pyongyang’s involvement in the conflict and “a dangerous expansion of Russia’s war.” U.S. President Joe Biden echoed this sentiment, calling the deployment “dangerous. Very dangerous.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are set to meet with their South Korean counterparts later this week in Washington. Singh said Austin and Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun will discuss the deployment of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine, and there will be no limitations on the use of U.S.-provided weapons on those forces.

“If we see DPRK troops moving in towards the front lines, they are co-belligerents in the war,” Singh said, using the acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or North Korea. “This is a calculation that North Korea has to make.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shrugged off Rutte’s comments, noting that Pyongyang and Moscow signed a joint security pact last June, but stopped short of confirming the presence of North Korean soldiers in Russia. He claimed that Western military instructors have long been covertly deployed to Ukraine to help its military use long-range weapons provided by Western partners.

Ukraine, whose defenses are under severe Russian pressure in its eastern Donetsk region, could face further setbacks if the upcoming U.S. presidential election results in a Donald Trump victory, which could lead to a reduction in key U.S. military assistance.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Monday that its troops have captured the Donetsk village of Tsukuryne, the latest settlement to succumb to the slow-moving Russian onslaught.

Rutte’s statement in Brussels came after a high-level South Korean delegation, including top intelligence and military officials as well as senior diplomats, briefed NATO’s 32 national ambassadors at the alliance’s headquarters. European officials who were present for the 90-minute exchange said the South Koreans showed no evidence of North Korean troops in Kursk.

It remains unclear how or when NATO allies might respond to the North Korean involvement, but they could potentially lift restrictions that prevent Ukraine from using Western-supplied weapons for long-range strikes on Russian soil.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing intelligence reports, claimed last Friday that North Korean troops would be on the battlefield within days, having previously stated that his government had information that some 10,000 troops from North Korea were being readied to join Russian forces fighting against his country.

Massachusetts Pizza Shop Owner Sentenced to 8.5 Years for Forced Labor, Threatening Undocumented Workers

Stavros Papantoniadis, 49, the owner of two Boston-area pizza shops, has been sentenced to 102 months in prison for using physical violence and threats of reprisal or deportation against employees living in the country illegally. The sentence, handed down in federal court on Friday, also includes one year of supervised release and a $35,000 fine.

Papantoniadis, who owns Stash’s Pizza, a Massachusetts pizzeria chain, was convicted in June of three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. He remained in custody since his arrest in March 2023.

Prosecutors said that Papantoniadis forced or attempted to force six victims – five men and one woman – to work for him and comply with excessive workplace demands. He used violent physical abuse, threats of violence and serious harm, and repeated threats to report the victims to immigration authorities for deportation.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua Levy said that Papantoniadis was driven by greed to prey on his workers, deliberately hiring foreign nationals who lacked authorization to work in the United States and then turning their lack of immigration status against them.

Papantoniadis thinly staffed his pizza shops and hired undocumented workers to work behind the scenes for 14 or more hours per day, up to seven days a week. He made them believe that he would physically harm them or have them deported, and monitored them with surveillance cameras.

In one instance, when Papantoniadis learned that a victim planned to quit, he choked him, causing the victim to flee the pizza shop. In another case, when a worker tried to leave and drive away from one of the pizza shops, Papantoniadis chased the victim down Route 1 in Norwood, Massachusetts, and falsely reported the victim to the local police to pressure the victim to return to work.

Papantoniadis’ lawyer, Carmine Lepore, said they are pursuing a new trial and an appeal, expressing disappointment in the length of the sentence. Lepore argued that the sentencing guidelines applicable to this case are more appropriate for human traffickers and sexual servitude defendants.

Rodri and Bonmatí Crowned Ballon d’Or Winners as Real Madrid Boycotts Ceremony

Spanish midfielders Rodri and Aitana Bonmatí were named the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or winners on Monday, recognizing them as the world’s best soccer players for the past season. However, the star-studded ceremony in Paris was overshadowed by Real Madrid’s apparent protest, as the club and its players boycotted the event.

Manchester City’s Rodri, 28, claimed the prestigious award for the first time after playing a pivotal role in his club’s Premier League triumph and Spain’s European Championship victory. He beat Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior into second place, a result that greatly displeased the Spanish giants.

Bonmatí, 26, retained her title after helping Barcelona secure a historic treble, winning the Spanish league, the Spanish cup, and the Champions League. She joined teammate Alexia Putellas in winning the award twice since its inception in 2018, leading a Barcelona 1-2-3 with Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo finishing second and third, respectively.

Despite attacking midfielder Jude Bellingham placing third, Dani Carvajal finishing fourth, and coach Carlo Ancelotti winning the coach of the year award, no one from Real Madrid attended the gala. The club’s players took to social media to express their frustration, with Vinícius writing, “I’ll do it 10x if needed. They are not ready.”

Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga also voiced his disapproval, calling the vote “football politics” and posting a supportive message for Vinícius on X (formerly Twitter). Former Madrid star Karim Benzema, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, shared a similar sentiment on Instagram.

Rodri, known for his unselfish play and defensive prowess, was quick to deflect praise, thanking those who recognized his value in the game. “When I was a kid I never thought of winning the Ballon d’Or, but in the last years I’ve been playing the highest level,” he said.

Bonmatí expressed her gratitude for the recognition, attributing her success to her teammates and clubs. “Thanks to my teammates and the clubs who make me a better football player every year,” she said upon receiving the award from Oscar winner Natalie Portman.

The Ballon d’Or, created by France Football magazine, has been awarded since 1956 for men and 2018 for women. It is voted for by journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings, with each journalist selecting 10 players in ranked order.

In other awards, Barcelona’s teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal won the Kopa award for best Under-21 player, while the Catalan club also claimed the best women’s team award. Absent Real Madrid was voted the best men’s team.

Emiliano Martínez retained the Lev Yashin award for best goalkeeper, while Carlo Ancelotti and Emma Hayes won the Johan Cruyff award for best men’s and women’s coach, respectively. Spain forward Jenni Hermoso, who faced sexism in Spanish soccer after being kissed on the lips by former federation president Luis Rubiales, collected the Socrates award for humanitarian work.

The ceremony also paid tribute to the late Germany great Franz Beckenbauer, with a special award given to his wife and son.

Manchester United Sack Manager Erik ten Hag, Appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy as Interim Head Coach

Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, with the team currently languishing in 14th place after nine matches. The Dutchman, 54, was informed of the decision on Monday morning, just two and a half years into his tenure.

Erik ten Hag hammered by United’s management

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had been serving as assistant manager, will take charge of the team as interim head coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

In a statement, the club said, “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Ten Hag’s sacking comes despite the team’s FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City in May, which helped him survive a summer review by the club’s hierarchy. However, a series of poor results, including 3-0 home defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, has led to United’s worst-ever Premier League start.

Former United defender Gary Neville criticized the team’s “absolutely disgusting performance” against Spurs at the end of September, calling it “one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag – and that is saying something.”

Sky Sports News understands that Ten Hag’s sacking was a unanimous decision by the club’s board, who felt that the on-field results were not good enough and that there were no excuses for the team’s current position.

Ten Hag, who signed a three-year deal with United in 2022, had frequently defended his record at the club, pointing to the Carabao Cup victory in 2023 and the FA Cup triumph over Manchester City last season. However, these moments of glory were not enough to dispel doubts about his leadership.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who became a part-owner of United with control over footballing matters in February, had recently commented on Ten Hag’s future, stating that while he liked the coach, results needed to improve.

Interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, considered a United legend with 150 goals in 219 appearances, has some coaching experience, most notably winning the KNVB Cup during his time as PSV Eindhoven boss.

As Manchester United begins their search for a permanent head coach, the club will be hoping to turn around their fortunes and restore the team to its former glory under the guidance of van Nistelrooy.

World’s Fattest Cat, Crumbs, Dies After Weight Loss Journey at Feline Fat Camp

Crumbs, a cat from Russia who gained international fame as the world’s fattest feline, has passed away just weeks after beginning a weight loss program at a veterinary diet centre in Perm. The cat, also known as Kroshik in his native country, once tipped the scales at over 38lbs due to a diet of biscuits and soup, making him larger than a small toddler at his heaviest.

Animal rescuers first discovered Crumbs living in the basement of a hospital in Perm, where he had been abandoned by his owners and was being fed by well-meaning rescuers. The cat’s extreme weight initially earned him the title “too big to walk,” but he managed to shed 2.2lbs in just a few weeks after being placed under special care at the veterinary diet centre.

Crumbs’ weight loss program included hydrotherapy, massage, and stretching up to four times a week, as well as sessions on a treadmill and in a water tank to ease the strain on his leg joints. Despite his impressive progress, the cat was caught attempting to escape the centre last month, getting stuck in a shoe rack with his belly hanging out.

Tragically, Crumbs suddenly fell ill overnight on Saturday and passed away just hours later, despite the best efforts of the veterinary team. His cause of death has not been announced, but vets noted the presence of “multiple growths in the spleen and metastases in other internal organs.”

The giant cat’s journey captured the hearts of thousands worldwide, with many following his recovery and cheering on his weight loss successes. His carers left a heartfelt tribute, saying, “For a long time, we could not understand the reason for such incredible popularity of Kroshik, because we did nothing to somehow attract the media to the story. Later we realised people from all over the world are so tired of bad news.”

They added, “We rejoiced with you at every victory of Kroshik and cherished his every step. Sometimes miracles do not happen. Sometimes even the strongest cats cannot cope.”

Crumbs once tried to escape but got trapped in a shoe rack

Crumbs’ story serves as a reminder of the importance of proper nutrition and exercise for pets, as well as the impact that a single animal’s journey can have on people around the globe. As the world mourns the loss of this beloved feline, his legacy as an inspiration for pet owners and animal lovers alike will continue to live on.

Former California Teacher Charged with Lewd Acts After Being Found in Teen’s Bedroom

A former band teacher in Modesto, California, has been arrested and charged with arranging to meet with a minor for lewd purposes and lewd acts with a minor following a three-year investigation. Patrick John Mester, 65, was found in the bedroom of a 16-year-old girl by her mother in October 2021, after he had been fired from his job at James C Enochs High School for inappropriate communication with the same student.

According to a press release from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, Mester was detained on October 23, 2024, and the investigation into the case has been ongoing since 2021. Mester had initially been arrested in March 2021 by the Modesto Police Department for inappropriate communication with the student, leading to his termination from the school district.

Modesto City Schools, where Mester had worked for over two decades since 2003, took immediate action after the March 2021 arrest, revoking his right to visit their facilities and ensuring he had zero contact with students. Despite passing background checks and attending regular training sessions on harassment and child abuse, Mester allegedly attempted to contact the 16-year-old girl again after his initial release on $5,000 bail.

The three-year investigation, which included several interviews with the victim, culminated in the current charges and Mester’s recent arrest. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office explained to SFGate that the lengthy investigation was necessary to carefully build the case over time, given the serious nature of the allegations.

Mester, born in Michigan according to arrest records, is currently being held at the detention center in Modesto with bail set at $650,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 30.

Teacher Arrested, Suspended After Student Dies Following Corporal Punishment in Ogun State, Nigeria

Azamdjo Elijah, a teacher at Obada Grammar School in Ogun State, Nigeria, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command and suspended by the state government following the death of Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student. Arijo allegedly died after being subjected to 162 frog jumps and 24 strokes of the cane as punishment for his response to the teacher’s instruction regarding a newly purchased dustbin.

The incident, which occurred on October 15, 2024, came to light after an activist, Adetoun, shared the story on Instagram. According to Adetoun, Elijah had brought a dustbin to Arijo’s class, instructing students not to break it. Arijo reportedly joked that the dustbin was bought with the students’ money, angering the teacher.

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that Arijo was made to perform 162 frog jumps and received 24 strokes of the cane, contrary to initial reports of 162 cane strokes. Arijo was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for medical attention but was pronounced dead on October 25. His body has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy, and an investigation is ongoing.

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to our correspondent that Elijah had been arrested and transferred to the police headquarters in Abeokuta for further investigation.

In response to the incident, the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, announced the suspension of Elijah and queried the school’s principal, Mrs Tamrat Onaolapo, for allowing corporal punishment against established rules and regulations. Onaolapo was given 24 hours to explain her actions and why disciplinary measures should not be taken against her.

The state government also sent a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, commiserating with them on the sudden death of their son and promising to seek justice. The letter, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, described the late Arijo as an exceptional pupil who would be missed by his colleagues, the school, and the state at large.

The tragic incident has reignited the debate on the use of corporal punishment in Nigerian schools and the need for stricter regulations to protect students from excessive and potentially harmful disciplinary measures.
