Carly Gregg, who was 14 at the time of the incident, is accused of shooting her mother, Ashley Smylie, in the neck following an argument over marijuana use. Prosecutors allege that after the shooting, Gregg texted her stepfather, Heath, in an attempt to lure him home.

Surveillance footage presented in court shows Gregg, wearing a Nirvana t-shirt, walking through the house before gunshots and screams are heard. The video then captures her using her mother’s phone to text her stepfather, “When will you be home, honey?”

Prosecutors claim Gregg also invited a friend over, asking them, “Have you ever seen a dead body?” before showing them inside. When Heath arrived home, he reportedly heard gunfire and managed to disarm Gregg, sustaining a graze wound to his shoulder.

Gregg has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her defense team argues she has no memory of the events, citing a history of mental health issues and recent marijuana use. At the time, Gregg was taking anxiety and depression medications.

The trial, now in its fourth day, has featured testimony from mental health professionals debating the extent of Gregg’s mental health struggles. Her former counselor described her as a gifted student with no history of violence, but noted a troubled relationship with her mother.

Gregg faces a potential life sentence if convicted. She previously rejected a plea deal offering 40 years in prison.

The case has shocked the local community, raising questions about youth mental health and family dynamics. As the trial continues, both prosecution and defense are presenting conflicting views on Gregg’s mental state and culpability.

Five Arrested in Fatal Stabbing Investigation in Teesside, UK

STOCKTON-ON-TEES, England  – Cleveland Police have arrested five individuals on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man in Teesside, authorities announced Thursday.

The incident occurred around midnight on Hills Drive in Stockton-on-Tees, a residential area just north of the town center. While formal identification of the victim is pending, police confirmed that the man’s family is receiving support from specially trained officers.

A local resident, speaking to Teesside Live, reported hearing “high-pitched screaming” and rushing to the scene to perform CPR on the victim. “He was still alive at that point,” the witness stated.

By Thursday morning, a blue forensic tent had been erected at the crime scene, with police officers guarding a taped-off area surrounded by cones. Forensic teams in white overalls were also observed working at the rear of nearby Stewart Road, according to the Northern Echo.

Cleveland Police stated that all five suspects remain in custody as detectives continue their questioning. The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to come forward as the investigation progresses.

This incident has shocked the local community, with residents expressing concern about safety in the area. Police have increased their presence in the neighborhood to reassure the public as they conduct their investigation.

Ohio Grandmother Pleads Guilty to Shooting Infant Granddaughter

A 43-year-old grandmother from Ohio has pleaded guilty to felony assault after admitting to intentionally shooting her six-month-old granddaughter in the eye, authorities reported Tuesday.

Mia Desiree Harris entered the plea in Butler County court, according to local media. Two additional assault charges related to other family members were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The incident occurred on December 9, 2022, in Liberty Township, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. Police responded to a 911 call around 1:50 a.m. reporting that an infant had been shot.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told local media that Harris fired multiple shots through a wooden door to enter the room where her granddaughter was sleeping. After breaking in, Harris allegedly shot the child’s mother, grazing her skull, before shooting the infant.

The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition but survived and is recovering, local reports state.

During a preliminary hearing in 2023, Detective Daniel Turner testified that after shooting the child, Harris lifted the infant off the bed and smiled as she handed the baby to its wounded mother.

When questioned about her motives, Harris reportedly told deputies, “That was not my grandbaby. Sorry, not sorry,” according to local media reports. She claimed her family was “trying to take all of her money and then leave.”

Sheriff Jones condemned the act, stating, “This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother.”

Harris is being held on a $1.5 million bond. In Ohio, first-degree felony assault carries a maximum penalty of 11 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Shohei Ohtani Makes History with 50-50 Season

0

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani made baseball history on Thursday, becoming the first Major League player to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season during a remarkable performance against the Miami Marlins.

Ohtani hit three home runs and stole two bases in the game, finishing 6-for-6 with 10 RBIs. His 49th homer came in the sixth inning, followed by his milestone 50th in the seventh, and his 51st in the ninth. He is also the first player to hit three home runs and steal two bases in a single game.

The Japanese superstar reached the 50-50 milestone in his 150th game of the season. He stole his 50th and 51st bases earlier in the game, successfully swiping third as part of a double steal with teammate Freddie Freeman in the first inning.

“I see all the work he puts in,” Dodgers catcher Will Smith said. “It’s not like he goes out there and it’s too easy for him. He works harder than anybody. He scouts really hard. He’s playing a different game so it’s fun to see.”

Ohtani, who signed a $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers in December, has played exclusively as a designated hitter this season while rehabilitating from elbow surgery. Despite not pitching, he has reached new offensive heights, surpassing his previous career high of 46 home runs set in 2021 with the Los Angeles Angels.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts commented on Ohtani’s increased base-stealing attempts this season, saying, “He’s not pitching this year so I think he is emptying the tank offensively.”

With the Dodgers headed to the postseason, Ohtani will have his first opportunity to play October baseball, having never reached the playoffs during his tenure with the Angels.

Ohtani’s historic season also puts him in contention for what could be his third career MVP award and potentially the first ever won by a designated hitter who did not also pitch.

As the regular season winds down, baseball fans and analysts alike are marveling at Ohtani’s unprecedented achievements, solidifying his status as one of the game’s most extraordinary talents.

Barcelona Loses 1-2 to AS Monaco in Champions League Opener

0

Barcelona fell to their first competitive loss under new manager Hansi Flick, dropping a 2-1 decision to AS Monaco in their UEFA Champions League opener on Thursday night.

The match took a dramatic turn early when Barcelona midfielder Eric Garcia received a red card in the 10th minute for a professional foul on Takumi Minamino. Monaco quickly capitalized, with Maghnes Akliouche scoring to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Despite being a man down, Barcelona equalized through 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose goal made him the second-youngest scorer in Champions League history. However, Monaco’s George Ilenikhena netted the winner in the second half to secure all three points for the Ligue 1 side.

Yamal’s goal briefly gave Barcelona hope, but the numerical advantage ultimately proved too much to overcome. The Spanish giants, who had started their domestic campaign with five straight wins under Flick, struggled to create chances after going down to 10 men.

Monaco dominated possession and shots on goal, though Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made several key saves to keep his team in the match. A late penalty appeal by Monaco’s Folarin Balogun was overturned after VAR review.

The result marks a disappointing start to Barcelona’s Champions League campaign, a competition where they haven’t reached the semi-finals since 2019. For Monaco, the victory provides a strong foundation as they look to progress from the group stage.

This defeat raises questions about Barcelona’s depth and ability to compete at the highest level, especially with a congested fixture list ahead. Flick will need to regroup his squad quickly as they balance domestic and European commitments.

Atalanta Plays 0-0 with Arsenal Play in Champions League Opener

0

Arsenal and Atalanta battled to a 0-0 draw in their UEFA Champions League group stage opener on Thursday night, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya emerging as the hero after saving a second-half penalty.

In a tightly contested match at the Gewiss Stadium, both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances. Arsenal dominated possession in the early stages, with Bukayo Saka’s driven free-kick providing their best opportunity in the first half.

Atalanta, last season’s Europa League winners, grew into the game as it progressed. Charles De Ketelaere had the hosts’ first significant chance around the 30-minute mark, firing wide from the edge of the box.

The game’s pivotal moment came two minutes into the second half when Arsenal’s Thomas Partey conceded a penalty. However, Raya produced a spectacular double save, denying Mateo Retegui from the spot and then blocking the follow-up attempt.

Atalanta continued to press, with substitute Juan Cuadrado curling a 20-yard effort just over the crossbar. Arsenal introduced Raheem Sterling late in the game in search of a winner, and the winger’s through ball set up Gabriel Martinelli for a close-range shot that sailed over the bar.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will likely be satisfied with his team’s defensive solidity away from home, though the lack of attacking potency may be a concern. For Atalanta, the result represents a solid start to their Champions League campaign against a formidable opponent.

The draw leaves both teams with a point in their opening Group F fixture, setting the stage for an intriguing battle for qualification as the tournament progresses.

Georgia Sisters Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Two elderly sisters were found dead in their Georgia home on Sunday in what police are investigating as a possible murder-suicide, authorities said.

The Chatham County Police Department responded to a call at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time, discovering Deborah Hudson, 71, and Deloris Hooker, 70, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

In a statement, police said witnesses reported that one sister entered the home and shot the other before turning the gun on herself. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities awaiting autopsy results.

According to local media reports, the sisters’ 98-year-old father was present in the home during the incident. Neighbors told WTOC that there had been “ongoing issues” between the siblings for years.

Witnesses reportedly stated that Hooker, the younger sister, had recently become homeless and was attempting to convince Hudson and their father to allow her to live in the house. Neighbors alleged that Hooker broke into the home through the back door before the shooting occurred.

The Chatham County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the deceased women, as reported by WJCL and the Savannah Morning News.

Police have not yet provided additional details about the circumstances leading to the tragedy or confirmed the witness accounts. The case remains under active investigation.

This incident has shocked the local community, raising questions about family disputes, elder care, and access to support services for individuals facing homelessness and mental health challenges.

Russia Dismantles Migrant Smuggling Ring Led by Nigerian Professor

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced Thursday it has broken up an international migrant smuggling network allegedly headed by a Nigerian university instructor based in Moscow.

The FSB stated that the group specialized in facilitating illegal entry and transit of African immigrants through Russian territory into European Union countries. “The illegal activities of an interregional group specializing in the paid entry and transit of immigrants from the African continent through Russian territory to EU countries have been thwarted,” the agency told state-run news agency TASS.

According to the FSB, the ring’s alleged leader is a senior lecturer at the engineering academy of the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN). While his name was not disclosed, authorities confirmed the detention of five key members of the network, including Russian, Nigerian, and Ukrainian nationals.

The smuggling operation reportedly generated at least 60 million rubles ($650,000) since 2021 by providing fake Russian residence papers and visas through fictitious marriages and paternity documents.

During 25 raids conducted in the Vladimir region, the FSB claimed to have rescued three Russian nationals who were allegedly held captive and exploited by the smugglers. These individuals have been turned over to local police.

Footage released by TASS showed FSB agents conducting searches and interrogations, including one where a man admitted to entering a fictitious marriage with a Nigerian woman.

This operation comes in the wake of Finland’s decision last year to close its border with Russia, accusing Moscow of using migrants from Africa and the Middle East in a “hybrid attack” – allegations the Kremlin has denied.

The FSB stated that investigations are ongoing to identify other possible accomplices in the smuggling network.

Alaska Man Charged with Threatening Supreme Court Justices

A 76-year-old Alaska man was arrested in Anchorage on Wednesday for allegedly threatening to harm and kill six U.S. Supreme Court Justices and some of their family members, the Department of Justice announced.

U.S. Supreme Court Justices

Panos Anastasiou faces nine counts of making threats against a federal judge and 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce, according to court documents. The charges stem from over 465 messages Anastasiou allegedly sent to the Supreme Court through a public website between March 10 and July 16, 2023.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated, “We allege that the defendant made repeated, heinous threats to murder and torture Supreme Court Justices and their families to retaliate against them for decisions he disagreed with.”

Prosecutors claim Anastasiou’s messages escalated to explicit threats beginning January 4, containing violent, racist, and homophobic language coupled with threats of assassination by various means.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland

Anastasiou made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kyle F. Reardon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each count of threatening a federal judge and five years for each count of making interstate threats.

The Supreme Court of the United States Police, Protective Intelligence Unit is investigating the case, with support from the U.S. Marshals Service and FBI Anchorage Field Office.

Attorney General Garland emphasized the importance of judicial independence, stating, “Our justice system depends on the ability of judges to make their decisions based on the law, and not on fear.”

The case underscores ongoing concerns about threats to public officials and the security challenges faced by the nation’s highest court.

Arizona Inmate Caught on Camera Attempting to Assault Female Prisoner

0

Surveillance footage from a Maricopa County jail facility has revealed a disturbing incident where a male inmate was seen crawling past a security guard to access the female side of the intake center, according to court documents and local media reports.

Justin Avery, 29, who was in custody for allegedly sexually assaulting five women near Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, was captured on video at 4 a.m. sneaking from the male side of the facility to the female area. The footage, obtained by ABC15 through a records request, shows Avery dropping to the floor and scooting past an apparently unaware guard.

Court documents state that Avery later admitted he “snuck over like a spider” with the intention to “rape” a female inmate. The incident occurred in April but has only recently come to light.

According to the documents, Avery approached a sleeping female inmate and lowered his pants before being spotted by another woman who alerted the guards. He was subsequently charged with an additional count of sexual assault.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying, “We’re appalled by inmate Avery’s actions.” They noted this was the first incident of its kind in the four years since the facility opened and have since added mirrors to improve monitoring of blind spots and reviewed their procedures.

Avery remains in custody and has been “reclassified” due to his behavior. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

This incident has raised serious questions about security protocols in the jail facility and the safety of inmates, particularly in gender-segregated areas.
