Amanda Knox Re-Convicted of Slander by Italian Court for Statement Made During Meredith Kercher Murder Investigation

0

In a surprising turn of events, an Italian court in Florence has re-convicted Amanda Knox of slander, upholding the only remaining conviction associated with the brutal murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007. The court sentenced Knox to three years for slandering Patrick Lumumba, a Congolese bar owner, in a written statement following Kercher’s murder.

Knox, who had her 2009 murder conviction overturned in 2011, is not expected to serve the time, as she has already spent approximately four years in prison. The European Court of Human Rights had previously ruled in 2019 that Italian law enforcement violated Knox’s rights during questioning, leading to Italy throwing out her initial slander conviction. However, the country’s supreme court requested the Florence court to begin a new trial to determine whether slander had occurred in the note.

Accompanied by her husband, Christopher Robinson, with whom she shares two children, Knox arrived at the Florence court on Wednesday morning to attend the hearing. Speaking in Italian, with a voice that occasionally trembled, Knox made a 10-minute declaration before the court, explaining why she wrote the note naming Lumumba.

Knox emphasized that she had no intention of hurting Lumumba, whom she considered not only her employer but also a friend who had consoled her following her roommate’s death. She attributed naming him to exhaustion and confusion during an extensive police interrogation.

Prior to the hearing, Knox expressed her hope to clear her name once and for all of the false charges against her. She acknowledged that the hearing was taking place in the same courtroom where she had been previously reconvicted of a crime she didn’t commit.

Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were initially convicted of murder in 2009, a ruling that was overturned in 2011. She was again convicted of murder in 2014 before the country’s highest court definitively acquitted both Knox and Sollecito of murder in 2015. Rudy Hermann Guede, another individual involved in the case, was convicted and served 13 years for the murder before being released in 2021.

On social media, Knox had shared her statement, ending with the Italian idiom “Crepi il lupo!” which roughly translates to “May the wolf die,” a common way of wishing someone good luck.

Israeli Forces Intensify Attacks in Central Gaza, Killing at Least 15 Palestinians

The Israeli military has launched a new ground and air assault in central Gaza on Tuesday, intensifying its attacks amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that fighter jets were targeting Hamas positions in the Bureij area, coinciding with ground forces operating in a targeted manner with intelligence guidance.

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured during the Israeli operation, with casualties reported east of the Bureij and Al-Maghazi displacement camps. The local Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital was overwhelmed with admissions, receiving more than six bodies and over 30 injured individuals, as confirmed by a CNN producer on the ground.

Among the casualties were a father and his 12-year-old son, who were killed when an artillery shell struck an apartment building east of Al Bureij, along with a boy, a girl, and a woman in her 20s. The hospital, struggling to cope with the influx of patients, called on the World Health Organization to visit and assess the situation.

Another CNN producer reported tank-fire in recent days from the east-west Netzarim corridor, which the IDF has carved through central Gaza towards neighborhoods south of Gaza City. The producer also mentioned a limited ground incursion in the same neighborhoods over the past three days.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, criticized the war’s loss of momentum and urged Israel to put more pressure on Hamas by pushing forward with its controversial operations in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah. Bennett argued that prolonging the war plays into Hamas’ hands and that the only way to achieve a ceasefire and hostage deal is to intensify pressure on the militant group.

Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza on October 7 in response to Hamas killing at least 1,200 people and abducting more than 250 others. Since then, Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of at least 36,550 Palestinians and injured another 82,959 people, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, although CNN cannot independently verify these figures.

As the humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to rise, the international community has expressed growing concern and criticism over Israel’s actions in Gaza. Bennett acknowledged that Israel is “paying an international price” but maintained that the country is trying to conduct “the most just war in history” while prioritizing the defense of its citizens.

Mother, 30,  Killed Shielding 10-Year-Old Daughter in Murder-Suicide

A GoFundMe campaign has been started by loved ones of a 10-year-old Texas girl who was critically injured in a tragic murder-suicide that claimed the life of her mother, Chantal Cantu. The fundraiser, created by Andre Thomas on behalf of the Cantu family, aims to cover the young girl’s medical expenses, as well as provide grief counseling and long-term emotional support for her and her 15-year-old brother, who are now left without a mother.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in Spring, Texas, on May 30 around 5 p.m. According to Sgt. Greg Pinkins of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a 39-year-old male, a 33-year-old female, and a 10-year-old girl were involved in what authorities have called a murder-suicide. Local outlet ABC 13 reported that the man was the boyfriend of the woman, and the child was her daughter.

Chantal Cantu killed loving her daughter.

Harris County Texas Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that all three sustained gunshot wounds. First responders found the boyfriend dead and the mother unresponsive at the scene. Despite receiving medical attention, the mother succumbed to her injuries.

The GoFundMe page states that Chantal Cantu was “murdered while protecting her daughter from gunfire.” The 10-year-old girl suffered gunshot wounds to five major organs in her abdomen and is currently in the pediatric intensive care unit at a local hospital, where she has undergone multiple surgeries. The family expects her to have a long road to recovery.

“Although Chantal’s 10-year-old daughter is strong and she is a fighter, the road to recovery will be long,” the fundraiser reads. “We would love nothing more than for her to get back to being that energetic, loving, caring soul that she was prior to this hideous act.”

Investigators believe the incident was a result of a “disturbance” between the man and woman, with the 10-year-old girl being “struck in the crossfire from the shooting,” according to Sgt. Pinkins.

As of June 4, the fundraiser has garnered more than $3,000 in donations to support the children’s recovery and well-being in the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy. The Cantu family remembers Chantal as “an amazing mother, daughter, sister, cousin, friend, and co-worker who knew no boundaries for those in her life.”

In a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence, a 3-year-old boy named Julian Wood was killed, and his mother, Margot Wood, 38, was injured in a stabbing attack at a Giant Eagle grocery store parking lot in North Olmsted, Ohio. The incident, which appears to be a random act of violence, has left the community in shock and mourning.

According to North Olmsted police detective Sgt. Matt Beck, Bionca Ellis, 32, of Cleveland, was arrested in connection with the crime. Ellis is accused of stabbing both Julian and Margot Wood. The mother and son were transported to St. John’s Medical Center for treatment, but tragically, Julian succumbed to his injuries. Margot Wood was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Ellis was charged with aggravated murder and arraigned via video from jail on Tuesday afternoon, with her bond set at $1 million. The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing, but authorities believe it was a random act of violence, with no prior interactions between Ellis and the victims.

Surveillance video footage showed Ellis obtaining a kitchen knife from a nearby Volunteers of America store before the attack. She then allegedly followed Margot and Julian out of the grocery store to their car, repeatedly stabbing them with the knife in hand.

While Margot Wood is expected to make a full physical recovery, Sgt. Beck acknowledged that the emotional trauma she has endured will likely follow her for the rest of her life.

North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed her condolences and shared her profound grief over the tragic loss of young Julian. She commended the swift response and compassion of the safety forces and called for the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers as they attempt to begin healing and moving forward.

Ellis was apprehended without resistance while walking towards Dover Center Road, still carrying the kitchen knife used in the attack. She was transported to the North Olmsted Jail. Although Ellis had several prior arrests, none of them were for violent offenses until Monday’s incident.

The senseless and violent nature of this attack has left the community reeling, as they come to terms with the loss of an innocent child and the trauma inflicted upon his mother. The North Olmsted police department continues its ongoing investigation into the crime as the community begins the difficult process of healing and moving forward.

Lady Gaga Shuts Down Pregnancy Rumors, Encourages Fans to Register to Vote

0

Pop icon Lady Gaga has taken to TikTok to directly address and deny the recent rumors suggesting that she is pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Michael Polansky. The speculation began over the weekend after the 38-year-old singer attended her sister Natali Germanotta’s wedding in Maine.

In a brief video posted on Tuesday, Gaga, wearing a nude wig cap and bold black eyeliner, lip-synced a viral TikTok audio while getting her hair and makeup done. She captioned the post, “not pregnant – just down bad cryin at the gym,” partially quoting lyrics from pop rival Taylor Swift’s song “Down Bad.” Gaga also encouraged her 9.3 million followers to “register to vote.”

Fans had gone into overdrive on Monday when images obtained by The Sun showed the Poker Face performer at her sister’s wedding, accompanied by her boyfriend, entrepreneur Michael Polansky, 46. Gaga looked stunning in a tight-fitting little black dress with an off-shoulder style, matching pumps, and a string of pearls. Some fans even speculated that the couple might have taken the next step in their relationship, as Gaga was seen wearing a massive diamond on her ring finger.

However, Gaga’s TikTok video has put an end to the pregnancy rumors. The multi-Grammy Award-winning singer has been dating Polansky for over four years, and in March 2021, it was reported that their romance was getting serious, with Gaga expressing her desire to start a family with him.

The superstar has previously opened up about her desire to become a mother. In her May 2020 cover story with InStyle, Gaga admitted that she is “very excited to have kids” and looks forward to being a mom. She marveled at the incredible ability to hold a human inside and grow it, emphasizing the responsibility to keep the child alive once born.

Prior to her relationship with Polansky, Gaga was engaged twice before, first to Taylor Kinney and then to her talent manager, Christian Carino. The last time she was spotted in public with Polansky was in April in Malibu, where she bundled up in an oversize sweatshirt, concealing her left hand amid engagement rumors.

Gaga recently wrapped up filming for her upcoming movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” and is currently working on a new album. She will soon be kicking off her eight-date Las Vegas jazz and piano residency at Park MGM.

As the private couple continues to keep their relationship out of the public eye, fans eagerly await any updates on Gaga’s personal and professional life.

Nigeria Aims to Become a Leading Milk Exporter in Africa Under AfCFTA, Says VP Shettima

0

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu-led government to harness the potential of Nigeria’s dairy subsector and position the country as a leading milk exporter within the African continent under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). The Vice President made this statement during the unveiling of the National Dairy Policy Document as part of the activities commemorating World Milk Day.

Despite consuming an average of 1.6 billion liters of milk and its products annually, Nigeria faces a production deficit, leading to the importation of dairy products worth $1.5 billion each year. Represented by Dr Kingsley Uzoma, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Agribusiness and Productivity Enhancement, Shettima emphasized that the National Dairy Policy will serve as a roadmap for revitalizing the dairy industry in the coming years.

The Tinubu administration aims to achieve national production security and eventually export dairy products to other African countries under the AfCFTA. The implementation of the National Dairy Policy is expected to improve dairy farming practices, increase investment in dairy processing and preservation, facilitate evidence-based policy implementation, foster collaboration, ease business operations, promote public-private partnerships, embrace technology and innovation, empower women and youth-centric business models, ensure good animal health practices, and monitor progress.

Shettima highlighted the significant investments from local and international firms, such as Friesland WAMCO and Danone’s Fan Milk, which have launched extensive backward integration projects to boost local milk production, create jobs, and promote economic development. These investments involve establishing state-of-the-art dairy farms and processing facilities, reducing the need for imports and enhancing food and nutritional security.

The Vice President emphasized the importance of comprehensive development strategies, greater investment, and better regulatory frameworks to support the growth and impact of the dairy industry. He also noted the potential of technology, innovation, and public-private partnerships in streamlining operations, boosting productivity, and facilitating access to finance and resources.

Senator Abdullahi Sabi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, presented the highlights of the National Dairy Policy, which aims to create an enabling environment, generate jobs, reduce imports, set milk production targets, establish milk collection centres, facilitate cooperative business structures, attract massive investments, improve nutrition, build capacity, support livestock farmers, promote financial empowerment, develop products, and ensure sustainability.

The transformation of Nigeria’s dairy sector is a collective responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of the government, private sector, and all stakeholders. By working together, Nigeria can harness the nutrition and investment opportunities in a sustainable dairy value chain, ensuring the industry’s continued growth, providing quality nutrition, creating jobs, achieving food security, and driving economic growth.

Slovenia Becomes Latest European Nation to Officially Recognize Palestinian Statehood

In a historic move, Slovenia has joined a growing list of European countries, including Spain, Ireland, and Norway, in formally recognizing Palestinian statehood. The decision came after the Slovenian parliament approved the motion with a majority vote on Tuesday, further solidifying the global support for the Palestinian cause.

The vote, which took place during an extraordinary parliament session, saw 52 votes in favor and zero against, as reported by Slovenia’s national broadcaster RTV Slovenija. The recognition comes amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine, particularly in the wake of Israel’s recent military offensive in Gaza.

Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon celebrated the decision on social media, stating, “Today is a historic day! The National Assembly of Slovenia has officially recognized Palestine, making Slovenia the 147th country to do so. This recognition is an expression of our commitment to peace and justice. Slovenia is on the right side of history, contributing to the two-state solution for lasting peace.”

The recognition of Palestinian statehood by Slovenia and other European nations is expected to bolster the Palestinian cause on a global scale. However, it may also strain relations with Israel, which has been facing increasing criticism for its actions in Gaza.

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of at least 36,550 Palestinians and injured another 82,959 since the start of the military offensive on October 7. The offensive was launched after the militant group Hamas, which governs Gaza, killed at least 1,200 people and abducted more than 250 others.

Earlier this month, a panel of independent UN experts condemned “the continued and systematic onslaught of violence committed against Palestinians in Gaza.” The agency has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken by Hamas.

Slovenia’s foreign minister emphasized that the country believes a two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace in the Middle East. She added that Slovenia “will tirelessly continue to work on the security of both nations, Palestinians and Israelis.”

The two-state solution, which has been the goal of the international community for decades, is seen by many nations as the only way to resolve the long-running conflict between Israel and Palestine. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously endorsed the idea under pressure from the Obama administration, he has recently stated that recognizing a Palestinian state post-October 7 would be a “reward for terror.”

The vast majority of the population in Gaza are descendants of 700,000 Palestinians who were displaced during the 1948-49 war, known as al-Nakba or “the catastrophe,” in what is now Israel.

As more European nations formally recognize Palestinian statehood, the international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict and the establishment of a viable two-state solution.

Ukrainian Forces Claim Successful Strike on Russian Missile System Inside Russian Territory Using Western Weapons

0

In a bold move, Ukrainian forces have reported a successful strike on a Russian S-300 missile system within Russian territory, utilizing weaponry provided by Western nations. The announcement was made by Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk, who shared compelling evidence of the strike on social media, stating, “It burns beautifully. It’s a Russian S-300. On Russian territory. The first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory.”

This development comes in the wake of recent authorization from US President Joe Biden, allowing Ukraine to conduct limited strikes using US-supplied arms within Russian territory surrounding Kharkiv. The decision follows the lifting of restrictions by several European countries on the use of such weapons by Ukraine.

While the specific source of the weapons involved in the reported strike remains unclear, Ukraine had long sought approval from Washington to target Russian soil with US-supplied armaments, particularly amidst Moscow’s intensified assault on Kharkiv. The approval granted by the US, although groundbreaking, comes with constraints and conditions. Ukraine is permitted to strike targets only around Kharkiv and is restricted from employing certain munitions, such as the long-range ATACMS missiles, capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers away.

Although military analysts view the decision positively, they urge caution against inflated expectations. The utilization of shorter-range GMLRS missiles enables Ukraine to disrupt Russian military operations near Kharkiv but may not significantly alter the overall dynamics of the conflict.

This shift in policy marks a significant departure in the conflict, with previous Ukrainian strikes on territory claimed by Russia, such as occupied Crimea, having occurred using Western-supplied weaponry. Despite warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding potential consequences, the US and several European nations have removed restrictions on Ukraine’s use of supplied weapons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed Biden’s decision as a positive step in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the face of ongoing hostilities in the Kharkiv region.

Woman Arrested for Attempting to Flush Newborn Baby Down IHOP Toilet

0

In a disturbing and tragic incident, a woman identified as Shaniqua Caldwell, 35, was arrested after allegedly attempting to flush a newborn baby down the toilet at an IHOP restaurant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The shocking event unfolded after police received a 911 call reporting a bleeding woman in the bathroom, whom witnesses believed may have suffered a miscarriage.

According to the Bowling Green Daily News, when police arrived at the scene, the woman had already left the restaurant. However, they discovered the body of a newly born infant in the toilet. Caldwell was later found in the parking lot of a nearby Red Roof Inn.

During questioning, Caldwell admitted to being at the IHOP but denied being pregnant. She also made unusual claims, such as being related to celebrities Michael Jordan and Denzel Washington, and not having had sex in six years. Detective Kyle Scharlow, who interacted with Caldwell, expressed concern about her mental state and welfare, particularly after she refused medical treatment despite the likelihood of having just given birth.

Due to the belief that Caldwell posed a potential danger to herself, she was taken into custody for an emergency mental health evaluation. She was unable to provide a local address and claimed to be from New York but did not offer an address there either.

Following her release, Caldwell was booked into Warren Country Regional Jail on a Class A misdemeanor charge of Concealing the Birth of an Infant. This charge, enacted in Kentucky in 1975, applies to individuals suspected of concealing the corpse of a newborn to hide the fact that it was born or to prevent the determination of whether it was born dead or alive.

The cause of the baby’s death is currently pending an autopsy, and depending on the results, additional charges may be filed. Caldwell is being held on a $2,500 bond, with police citing the lack of identifying information she provided as a strong indication that she would not appear in court if simply cited and released.

This heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock and mourning for the loss of an innocent life. As the investigation continues, authorities hope to uncover the full truth behind this tragic event.
