Chris Brown Pleads Guilty To Affray Over London Nightclub Bottle Attack

Date:

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty Friday to affray at London’s Southwark Crown Court over a 2023 nightclub attack in which he struck a music producer twice on the head with a glass bottle.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped more serious charges including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Brown, 37, will be sentenced October 26. The affray charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

What We Know So Far

Brown and his vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 40, both pleaded guilty to affray.

The attack took place on February 19, 2023, at the Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair neighborhood.

Prosecutors said Brown approached victim Abraham Diaw from the dancefloor, moved through the crowd, and struck him twice over the head with a glass bottle. Akinlolu then punched the victim in the head. Both men continued the assault as the victim tried to flee, and the victim was kicked while seated on the floor, prosecutors said. The entire incident was caught on the club’s surveillance cameras.

Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries.

Brown and Akinlolu left the United Kingdom after the attack. Police issued warrants for their arrest. Brown returned to the country more than two years later for a concert in Manchester and was arrested at a hotel in May 2025.

He had been free on bail of five million pounds, which allowed him to tour Europe and North America. He was freed on bail again Friday with a condition that he return to the UK by October 25, the day before sentencing.

Brown arrived at court wearing a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap. He was flanked by security guards. A small group of fans had gathered outside, playing his music and shouting his name. He signed autographs as he left.

What Authorities Are Saying

Claire Campbell, a senior Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor, described the attack in direct terms.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Campbell said.

“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly to pursue cases like this and prove that no one is above the law,” she added.

Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti of the Metropolitan Police Service said the attack put a man in hospital.

“There is no place for serious violence like this in London and I’m pleased these men accepted what they did wasn’t just completely unacceptable but criminal,” Ripamonti said.

“This has been a long investigation and we’ve worked with police colleagues in the UK to bring these two men to justice,” she added.

Why This Matters

Brown has a long history of legal trouble.

In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault for beating his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, hours before the pair were scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards.

In 2013, he was charged with misdemeanor assault for striking a man outside a Washington hotel. He was ordered into rehabilitation and later dismissed from the facility for violating its rules.

In 2019, he was arrested in Paris on suspicion of rape. He was released without charge.

Brown rose to fame as a teenager in 2005 and has won two Grammy Awards for best R&B album, one for “F.A.M.E.” in 2011 and another for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025.

The Friday guilty plea ends a legal process that began when Brown initially denied the more serious charges and had been scheduled for a full trial in October.

What Happens Next

Brown and Akinlolu are due back at Southwark Crown Court on October 26 for sentencing before Judge Tony Baumgartner.

The affray charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Whether the court imposes a custodial sentence, given the nature of the attack and Brown’s prior criminal record, will be determined at that hearing.

Brown’s bail conditions allow him to leave the United Kingdom but require him to return no later than October 25.
