Delta Bans Thousands of Passengers Amid 5,500 Flight Cancellations, US Government Launches Investigation

Date:

Delta Airlines has banned thousands of passengers from travel as it struggles to recover from a widespread Microsoft outage that began early Friday morning. The airline has canceled over 5,500 flights, causing widespread chaos for travelers across the United States. In response, the US Department of Transportation has launched an investigation into Delta’s operations.

The software collapse, attributed to a Crowdstrike update, has affected multiple airlines, but Delta appears to be struggling the most to recover. The carrier announced more than 400 flight cancellations on Tuesday morning, while competitors like American Airlines and United have largely resumed normal operations.

In a controversial move, Delta has temporarily suspended unaccompanied minor travel through Tuesday, July 23. Many families reported being unaware of this ban until arriving at check-in counters, causing significant disruption to travel plans.

Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the government investigation, stating, “US D.O.T. has opened an investigation into Delta Air Lines to ensure the airline is following the law and taking care of its passengers during continued widespread disruptions.

Passengers have reported numerous issues, including:

– Lack of notification about travel bans

– Refusal to provide hotel and meal vouchers

– Denying cash refunds or alternative rebooking options

Delta acknowledged that travelers are entitled to refunds, reimbursement for eligible expenses, and travel waivers for inconveniences faced from July 19-23. However, many passengers claim these commitments have not been honored.

Secretary Buttigieg emphasized, “We have made clear to Delta that they must take care of their passengers and honor their customer service commitments. This is not just the right thing to do, it’s the law.”

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on Delta’s ability to resolve these issues and the potential consequences of the government investigation. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in the airline industry’s technological infrastructure and the importance of robust passenger protection measures.
