A German police officer has been dismissed from his position after allegedly stealing approximately 400 pounds of cheddar cheese from an overturned truck at an accident scene. The Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Administrative Court rejected the former officer’s appeal, upholding the decision to terminate his employment.
According to German media outlet DW, the incident occurred when the highway patrol officer was assigned to secure an accident site. The court statement revealed that the officer “drove a police minibus close to the damaged truck, opened the sliding side door of the police bus and asked the employee of a salvage company working there to hand him several undamaged packages of cheese from the refrigerated container.
The theft involved nine packages of cheddar cheese, each weighing about 44 pounds, with a total value of around $595. The court stated that the officer took some of the packages back to his office, and it is believed he kept portions of the cheese for himself, family, and friends.
In his defense, the former officer claimed the cheese was essentially worthless due to the break in the cold chain and that he wanted to save it from destruction. He also asserted that he didn’t eat cheddar cheese. However, the court dismissed these arguments, stating, “With this behavior, the defendant seriously damaged the reputation of the country’s police force.
The court ruled that the low value of the cheese was irrelevant, emphasizing that it was the officer’s duty to prevent theft rather than engage in it. This decision underscores the importance of maintaining ethical standards within law enforcement, even in seemingly minor incidents.
