Donald Trump’s campaign has filed a dramatic complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing Britain’s Labour Party of election interference, invoking the American Revolution while alleging improper coordination with Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.
The extraordinary filing, which notably misspells “Britain” as “Britian,” draws a provocative parallel between current Labour Party activities and British forces during the Revolutionary War. “When representatives of the British government previously sought to go door-to-door in America, it did not end well for them,” the Trump campaign’s legal team wrote, referencing the Battle of Yorktown’s anniversary.
At the heart of the complaint is a now-deleted LinkedIn post by Labour’s head of operations, Sofia Patel, indicating that one hundred current and former party staffers were heading to the United States to campaign for Harris ahead of the November 5 election. The Trump campaign alleges this constitutes “blatant foreign interference” and “illegal foreign national contributions.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, responding while en route to a Commonwealth summit in Samoa, dismissed the allegations, explaining that party officials were “doing it in their spare time” as volunteers, consistent with previous election cycles. “They’re staying I think with other volunteers over there,” Starmer said, insisting the activity would not damage his “good relationship” with Trump.
The complaint specifically names senior Labour figures, including Downing Street communications director Matthew Doyle and the prime minister’s chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, citing reported meetings with Democratic campaign officials.
Trump campaign co-manager Susie Wiles framed the issue in stark terms: “In two weeks, Americans will once again reject the oppression of big government that we rejected in 1776. The flailing Harris-Walz campaign is seeking foreign influence to boost its radical message – because they know they can’t win the American people.”
The controversy sparked immediate reaction on social media, with Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene asserting that “foreign nationals are not allowed to be involved in anyway in US elections.” However, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk deleted his initial claim of illegality after fact-checkers noted U.S. law permits unpaid foreign volunteers in campaigns.
The complaint acknowledges the “volunteer exemption” in U.S. election law but argues foreign nationals “may not be compensated, make expenditures, or direct or control activities of US campaigns.” Trump’s legal team demands an immediate investigation into the relationship between Labour and the Harris campaign.
The dispute emerges just weeks after Starmer’s meeting with Trump at Trump Tower in New York, where the British leader emphasized his belief in “personal relationships on the world stage.” The Labour Party’s alleged involvement adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious presidential race.
The Harris campaign has not yet responded to the allegations, while Labour maintains its volunteers are acting within legal boundaries and following established precedent from previous U.S. elections.
