The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the most attended tournament in the competition’s history after attracting more than 3.6 million spectators, surpassing a record that stood for more than three decades with several weeks of competition still remaining.
FIFA confirmed Thursday that cumulative attendance reached 3,605,357 following the completion of the group stage matches between Germany and Ecuador at New York New Jersey Stadium and Côte d’Ivoire and Curaçao at Philadelphia Stadium. The figure exceeded the previous World Cup attendance record of 3,587,538 spectators established during the 1994 tournament hosted by the United States.

The milestone was reached just over two weeks into the expanded competition, making it virtually certain that the record will continue climbing before the championship concludes on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
To commemorate the achievement, FIFA paused the Germany against Ecuador match during a hydration break to recognize the tournament’s record breaking spectator on the field alongside 2014 World Cup winner Sami Khedira. The announcement was also displayed inside the stadium as fans celebrated the historic occasion.
Tournament organizers also announced that Thursday established a new single day World Cup attendance record after 384,206 spectators attended matches across host cities. FIFA added that stadium occupancy throughout the tournament is approaching an unprecedented 99.7 percent, reflecting exceptionally strong demand for tickets across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The previous attendance benchmark was achieved during the 1994 World Cup, when 24 national teams competed in 52 matches across the United States. Stadium occupancy during that tournament averaged approximately 96 percent.
This year’s tournament represents the most significant expansion in World Cup history. FIFA increased the competition from 32 to 48 participating nations, resulting in 104 scheduled matches, 40 more than were played during the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The revised format also introduces an additional knockout round, creating more opportunities for supporters to attend matches and contributing significantly to the record breaking attendance.
The size of North American stadiums has also played a major role in the record setting crowds. Most National Football League venues selected for the tournament accommodate between 60,000 and 80,000 spectators, substantially larger than many stadiums used during previous World Cups.
MetLife Stadium, the tournament’s final venue, has a sporting capacity of approximately 82,500, while many other American host stadiums regularly accommodate crowds well above those seen during recent tournaments.

By comparison, most venues used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar seated around 45,000 spectators. The country’s two largest stadiums, Lusail Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium, accommodated approximately 88,966 and 68,895 spectators respectively.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the tournament as an overwhelming success, pointing to consistently full stadiums and the diverse mix of supporters attending matches.
“Stadiums are full, cities are full, the ambience is great,” Infantino said. “We have many families, many children, many women in the stadium, and this is really beautiful.”
He also said the expanded tournament format has created new opportunities for emerging football nations to gain global recognition.
Among the biggest stories has been Cape Verde’s impressive debut appearance at the World Cup. The island nation earned worldwide attention after holding tournament favorite Spain to a memorable draw during its opening group stage match.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha became one of the tournament’s breakout personalities after producing a series of outstanding saves against Spain. The 40 year old attracted millions of new followers on Instagram following the performance and described the experience as the defining moment of his football career.
“It’s the best moment in my life, the best experience I’ve had in what I love,” Vozinha said. “There are no words that I can describe this moment.”
The attendance milestone also reflects football’s accelerating commercial growth in North America. Industry analysts believe the expanded World Cup format is delivering significant economic benefits for host cities through increased hotel occupancy, higher restaurant sales, transportation demand and tourism spending. Local businesses surrounding stadiums have experienced sharp increases in customer traffic on match days, while broadcasters and sponsors continue to benefit from larger global audiences.
The tournament’s commercial success is expected to strengthen FIFA’s confidence in maintaining the expanded 48 team format for future editions. The larger competition has created more opportunities for emerging football nations while significantly increasing ticket revenues, sponsorship exposure and broadcasting inventory.
The record crowds also underscore football’s growing popularity across the United States and Canada, markets traditionally dominated by American football, basketball and baseball. With millions of spectators attending matches and television audiences expected to reach new highs, the tournament is likely to leave a lasting legacy for the sport throughout North America.
Several major matches remain on the schedule, including the knockout rounds and the championship final. As additional fans continue filling stadiums over the coming weeks, the tournament’s all time attendance record is expected to climb substantially beyond its current mark, establishing a new benchmark that could stand for years.
Why this matters
The record attendance demonstrates the commercial strength of the expanded World Cup and reinforces North America’s ability to host global sporting events on an unprecedented scale. Strong ticket demand is expected to influence FIFA’s planning for future tournaments while encouraging further investment in football infrastructure across the region.
What happens next
The tournament continues through July 19, with dozens of matches still to be played. Philadelphia will host Croatia against Ghana before staging a Round of 16 match on July 4, while New Jersey will host the World Cup Final. Attendance figures are expected to continue rising with every remaining fixture.
