Bahamas Plane Crash: 10 Dead as Government Grounds Flamingo Air

Date:

A small passenger aircraft crashed in the Bahamas on Friday, killing all 10 people aboard and prompting the government to suspend Flamingo Air’s operations while investigators determine what caused one of the country’s deadliest aviation accidents in recent years.

The tragedy unfolded in North Andros as the nation marked its 53rd Independence Day, transforming what was expected to be a national celebration into a day of mourning.

Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis initially announced that one passenger had survived the crash. Hours later, he confirmed the individual had died from injuries sustained in the accident, raising the confirmed death toll to 10.

“We gather beneath a cloud of great sorrow,” Davis said during a press briefing. “It has become a day of mourning.”

He also extended condolences to the victims’ families, saying the country mourns with those who lost loved ones in the disaster.

What we know so far

The Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority said the aircraft was a Bahamas registered Cessna 402 operated by Flamingo Air.

Officials said the plane departed Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and was en route to San Andros before crashing in North Andros. Authorities have not yet identified the victims publicly or disclosed what may have caused the aircraft to go down.

Investigators from the country’s aviation accident authority have secured the crash site and begun collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The government also confirmed that Flamingo Air experienced another separate aviation incident earlier Friday involving a different aircraft.

That flight, which was traveling to Mayaguana, returned safely to Nassau after the pilot reported a technical concern. After passengers safely left the aircraft, it caught fire on the ground. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Officials have not established any connection between the two events.

What authorities are saying

The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation announced the immediate suspension of Flamingo Air’s Air Operator Certificate as a precaution while investigations continue.

The ministry said the temporary measure follows two separate aviation safety incidents involving the airline on the same day and is intended to ensure passenger safety while investigators complete their work.

Energy, Utilities and Aviation Minister JoBeth Coleby Davis said authorities are treating both events independently until evidence determines whether any link exists between them.

Prime Minister Davis said investigators are working to establish the facts before drawing conclusions.

“At this stage, the facts are still being established, and the relevant authorities are working to determine exactly what occurred,” he said, urging the public to respect the privacy of affected families during the investigation.

Why this matters

The accident has renewed attention on aviation safety within the Bahamas, where domestic airlines provide an essential transportation network connecting dozens of islands across the archipelago.

Flights between Nassau and the Family Islands serve residents, businesses and tourists, making regional air travel critical to the country’s economy and daily life.

The government’s decision to suspend Flamingo Air operations illustrates the seriousness with which regulators are treating the incident, particularly after two safety related events involving the carrier occurred within hours of each other.

Investigators will likely examine aircraft maintenance records, pilot communications, weather conditions, operational procedures and any available flight data to determine what caused the crash.

What happens next

Aviation investigators are expected to conduct a comprehensive examination of the wreckage while interviewing witnesses and reviewing maintenance documentation and operational records.

Authorities have pledged to provide additional information as confirmed findings become available.

The suspension of Flamingo Air’s operating certificate will remain in effect until officials determine it is safe for the airline to resume service.

Families of the victims are also expected to receive support from government agencies as identification procedures and the investigation continue.

Although investigators have not identified the cause of the crash, the government’s swift decision to suspend Flamingo Air reflects a precautionary approach designed to preserve public confidence in the country’s aviation system while ensuring passenger safety.

The fact that another Flamingo Air aircraft experienced a separate emergency earlier the same day is likely to draw increased regulatory scrutiny of the airline’s maintenance practices, operational oversight and safety management systems. Whether the incidents are connected remains unknown, and aviation investigators typically avoid drawing conclusions until technical evidence has been fully examined.

The tragedy also underscores the importance of regional aviation throughout island nations such as the Bahamas, where small aircraft are vital for transporting residents and visitors between islands that lack practical road or ferry connections. Any prolonged disruption to domestic air service could affect tourism, commerce and essential travel across the archipelago.
