At Least 46 Dead, Mostly Children, After Boat Capsizes in Nigeria

Date:

An overloaded boat capsized Thursday in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state, killing dozens of people, many of them children, as rescue teams continued searching for others still missing, officials said.

The Sokoto State Police Command, in the most authoritative account available as of the latest reporting, confirmed 46 bodies had been recovered and 15 passengers rescued alive out of 77 people who were aboard the boat when it capsized. Police spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai said rescue teams, including local divers, the National Emergency Management Agency, the State Emergency Management Agency and police, were still searching for 16 remaining passengers.

The accident occurred near the community of Gorau in the Goronyo local government area as the boat carried farmers, laborers and family members to rice farms, a common daily crossing for residents who rely on the waterway for agricultural work.

What We Know So Far

Casualty and passenger figures shifted considerably throughout the day as officials, witnesses and local leaders offered differing counts before police issued their confirmed tally. Early witness accounts varied widely on how many people were aboard, with one resident describing more than 70 passengers, another citing 57, and a local community leader initially estimating more than 80. Sokoto state manager for the National Inland Waterways Authority, Abdulkadir Yusuf, said in an early estimate that around 40 children’s bodies had been recovered, while a lawmaker representing the area, Nasiru Adamu, said 16 people had been rescued and that most victims were between 10 and 15 years old.

Death toll estimates similarly climbed over the course of the day before police issued their confirmed count. One eyewitness reported 46 people buried with the toll reaching 53 as more bodies were recovered. The Associated Press separately cited an official death toll of 47 “so far” from Yusuf. A community leader in Gorau said 41 people had been buried at one point during the search. Punch Nigeria’s earliest report on the incident cited only about 40 passengers and roughly 20 bodies recovered, figures later superseded by the police command’s confirmed count of 46 dead and 77 total aboard.

Resident Samaila Garba, 55, said his 13 year old granddaughter, Jamila Usman, was among those killed, and that he had personally counted at least 42 bodies, most of them women and children. He said women and children commonly travel to farms during the rainy season, explaining why so many were aboard. Another resident, Aminu Dan Hajiya, said he uses the same waterway to reach his own farm and considered himself fortunate not to have been on the boat, adding that nearly every household in the community had been affected by the tragedy.

A Reuters witness reported seeing 50 bodies, many wrapped in mats and traditional cloths, laid out in the forecourt of a community mosque ahead of burial in Gorau later Thursday.

Thursday’s accident occurred exactly one year after a similar boat accident in Kijio community, also within Goronyo local government area, according to multiple local reports.

What Authorities Are Saying

Rufai said police, along with NEMA, the State Emergency Management Agency and local divers, were continuing the search for the 16 passengers still unaccounted for as of the latest update. He said the cause of the accident remained under investigation.

Mustapha Umar, director of relief and rehabilitation at Sokoto’s state emergency management agency, said officials were en route to the scene and would provide further information once they arrived. A senior NEMA official who identified himself as Alhaji Ibrahim said the agency had mobilized personnel to join the rescue operation.

Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Sokoto State, called the incident a devastating tragedy, particularly given that some victims were children between 10 and 15 traveling with farmers and laborers. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones and those whose relatives are still missing,” Dan’iya said in a statement issued by his media aide.

Why This Matters

Deadly boat accidents remain relatively common in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season, when overcrowding, poor vessel maintenance and weak enforcement of safety regulations combine to create hazardous conditions on the country’s rivers and waterways. In January, at least 25 people died when a leaking boat capsized in Yobe state in northeastern Nigeria, illustrating how frequently these disasters recur across different regions of the country.

Dan’iya’s call for a comprehensive assessment of Sokoto’s waterways, including regulated boats, life jackets, trained operators, emergency response equipment and alternative crossings such as bridges, points to systemic gaps in transportation safety that extend well beyond this single incident. His remark that farmers should not have to risk their lives to reach their fields underscores how essential these water crossings are to local agricultural livelihoods, leaving communities with few safer alternatives despite the recurring danger.

The fact that this accident occurred exactly one year after a similar capsizing in the same local government area suggests earlier warnings and incidents have not led to meaningful safety improvements along these waterways, raising questions about the effectiveness of any interventions implemented since the previous tragedy.

What Happens Next

Search efforts are continuing for the 16 passengers still missing, with local divers and emergency responders working alongside NEMA and state emergency officials. Authorities have not given a timeline for when the search is expected to conclude.

Dan’iya and other local figures have called for proper identification and documentation of victims to help affected families access appropriate assistance, along with broader safety reforms for waterway transportation in farming communities. Whether state or federal authorities move forward with the kind of comprehensive waterway safety assessment Dan’iya proposed remains to be seen in the aftermath of the tragedy.
