The United States, United Kingdom, and France have called on their nationals to leave the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) city of Goma as violence escalates between M23 rebels and Congolese forces. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have failed, while the fighting continues to displace thousands of civilians.

On Friday, clashes erupted outside Goma, with M23 rebels closing in on the city, which is home to about two million people. The rebels, who have gained significant territory in recent weeks, are reportedly backed by Rwandan troops. The situation is rapidly deteriorating, prompting the international community to urge citizens to leave the area while airports and borders remain open.

The United Nations (UN) has warned of a mounting humanitarian crisis in the region. According to UNHCR spokesman Matthew Saltmarsh, over 400,000 people have been displaced in 2025 alone. Saltmarsh expressed concern over the safety of civilians and internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom have been forced to seek refuge in Goma.

“The number of displacements is now over 400,000 people this year alone, almost double the number reported last week,” Saltmarsh said during a briefing in Geneva.

UN chief Antonio Guterres also expressed alarm over the resumption of hostilities, urging an immediate ceasefire. He warned the conflict could spark a broader regional war, as fighting in North Kivu province continues to escalate.

Fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels was reported in the town of Sake, located 20 kilometers from Goma. Military sources confirmed that the M23 was present in Sake as of Friday.

The death of North Kivu’s military governor, General Peter Cirimwami, was confirmed on Friday. He had been shot the previous day near the frontlines.

As civilians flee the violence, at least a dozen UN peacekeeping vehicles were seen heading west from Goma, and armored vehicles from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission were transporting supplies to the frontlines. The International Committee of the Red Cross reported treating more than 70 wounded individuals at a hospital in Goma on Thursday.

M23, or the March 23 Movement, previously occupied Goma in 2012 before being driven out by Congolese forces with UN support. However, despite several peace talks and ceasefires, the conflict persists.

Efforts to mediate between DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame have thus far failed. A peace process led by Angola was also abandoned in December after the two leaders failed to reach an agreement. On Thursday, Turkey offered to lead new mediation efforts.

The amended complaint alleges Pisciotta was drugged at a recording studio and subjected to inappropriate behavior while working for the rapper. 

Court documents obtained on Jan. 22 state that despite “extensive investigation and efforts to effectuate personal service,” West has not been served. His businesses, including Yeezy Construction Inc., are reportedly defunct. Pisciotta’s legal team has been unable to locate him, noting that West appears to have relocated to Japan with his wife, Bianca Censori, after moving out of their West Hollywood rental. 

The filing details attempts to serve West at multiple locations, including a multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills property he purchased last year, which remains vacant. Pisciotta’s legal team alleges that West is “out of the country and/or evading service.” 

As a result, her attorneys are requesting permission to notify him of the lawsuit through a newspaper advertisement. The next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 29 in Los Angeles. 

Pisciotta, who worked as West’s executive assistant and later chief of staff between 2021 and 2022, claims the rapper engaged in inappropriate conduct, including sending her explicit text messages and masturbating in front of her during a private flight to Paris. 

The amended complaint includes allegations that Pisciotta was drugged at a Santa Monica recording studio years before she worked for West. She claims her drink was spiked during a session co-hosted by West and Sean “Diddy” Combs, leaving her in an “altered and heavily impaired state.” Pisciotta alleges West later referenced the incident, laughing and saying, “Women love to say they don’t remember.” 

West, who has denied the allegations, has yet to hire legal representation for the case. Meanwhile, other former employees have reportedly faced similar difficulties serving him with legal papers in separate lawsuits. 

Despite his legal troubles, West recently took to Instagram to tout his $2.77 billion net worth, based on his music portfolio and sole ownership of the Yeezy brand.

Mexico refused to accept a U.S. deportation flight that was scheduled to land last night, U.S. defense officials said Friday. The flight, which was set to transport deportees, was canceled after Mexican authorities denied clearance to land, officials said. 

Two other U.S. military C-17 planes carried approximately 80 immigrants each to Guatemala as part of ongoing deportation efforts, the officials confirmed. There are no additional deportation flights scheduled for today, though that could change, they said. 

In New Jersey, local officials and immigrant rights advocates criticized federal immigration authorities for conducting a workplace raid in Newark without a warrant. 

During a press conference, Mayor Ras Baraka said agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement entered the back of a small business in Newark, arresting three undocumented workers and detaining employees who are U.S. citizens. 

“People were fingerprinted. Pictures of their IDs and faces were taken there,” Baraka said. “I was appalled, upset, angry that this would happen here in this state, in this country.” 

The raid comes amid a surge in immigration arrests nationwide. ICE confirmed that the agency detained 538 individuals across the country on Thursday, doubling its daily average. 

The increase in arrests is part of President Donald Trump’s push to enforce stricter immigration policies. His administration has pledged to carry out what Trump has called “the largest deportation program in American history.” 

Reports of suspected immigration raids have also surfaced in cities such as Boston, further fueling concerns among immigrant communities and advocacy groups.

An American hiker was shot in the leg by suspected Mexican cartel members in the mountains near San Diego on Wednesday, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in border regions.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that the incident took place in the Jacumba Wilderness area, near the U.S.-Mexico border, when two hikers, one American and one Canadian, were confronted by armed individuals.

“Two of the hikers, one U.S. citizen and one Canadian citizen, were approached by two armed individuals and were commanded to come toward the armed men,” the CBP stated. “When the hikers refused to follow the armed subjects’ commands, the assailants fired a volley of shots toward the hikers, striking one victim in the leg.”

The assailants then advanced, robbing the injured hiker and his companion of their cell phones and backpacks before retreating into Mexico. Border Patrol agents responded to emergency calls, evacuating the injured hiker and tracking the attackers.

The attack occurred approximately 1,000 feet north of the U.S.-Mexico border in the Jacumba Wilderness, a known hotspot for illegal crossings. The incident follows President Donald Trump’s executive order this week designating Mexican drug cartels and other criminal organizations, including Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, as terrorist groups.

Trump’s order emphasized the threat these groups pose to “the safety of the American people, the security of the United States, and the stability of the international order in the Western Hemisphere.”

Border Patrol agents from the Mountain Disrupt Unit, Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), and Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) were deployed to the scene.

“At 12:08 p.m., agents located the injured victim, stabilized him, and created a protective perimeter,” the CBP reported. “The victim was airlifted to Sharp Medical Center in San Diego for treatment. Agents tracked the assailants back to the border, where they retreated into Mexico.”

El Centro Sector Chief Gregory Bovino commented: “This incident underscores the importance of adequate border infrastructure. Suspected cartel terrorists are fixing to learn this type of conduct will be an end game type of activity here in the premier sector. All threats will be addressed vigorously.”

Brian Michael Jenkins, a terrorism expert at the RAND Corporation, told Newsweek: “Drug cartels could easily evolve into real terrorist organizations. With over one million U.S. expats in Mexico, they and their firms could become targets for reprisals.”

The incident has reignited discussions about border security and potential military action against cartels. President Trump, who has previously suggested deploying troops into Mexico to combat these organizations, remarked: “Could happen… stranger things have happened.”

In his press release, Ogles expressed that Trump’s leadership stands in contrast to the economic struggles Americans have faced in recent years, suggesting that only Trump could reverse the nation’s current trajectory. “This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs,” Ogles said.

The 22nd Amendment currently states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice…” Trump, who served one term from 2016 to 2020, is currently vying for re-election in 2024. Under the proposed amendment, only presidents who have not served two consecutive terms could seek a third term, effectively excluding figures such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama from seeking an additional term.

The proposed amendment has sparked opposition from Democratic lawmakers. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) described it as unnecessary, saying, “Two terms is enough chaos for any nation to endure.” Other critics, including Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), argued that the proposal reflects Trump’s authoritarian tendencies, which have been normalized within the Republican Party.

The amendment process would require broad support from Congress and state legislatures. To succeed, it would need two-thirds approval in both houses of Congress or approval from two-thirds of state legislatures, followed by ratification from three-fourths of state legislatures or conventions.

As of now, Ogles’ proposal faces significant hurdles to achieving the constitutional changes it calls for.

Hamas has released the names of four Israeli soldiers set to be freed on Saturday as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel. 

The hostages include Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, and Naama Levy, all aged 20, as well as 19-year-old Liri Albag. All four were serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and were captured during Hamas’ cross-border attack on the Nahal Oz base in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. 

The exchange will include 200 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails—50 prisoners for each IDF soldier released under the ceasefire deal. Of the Palestinian prisoners, 120 are reportedly serving life sentences. 

NBC News, citing a senior Hamas official, confirmed that all four Israeli captives are alive. The latest exchange follows the release of three Israeli hostages earlier in the week, including dual British citizen Emily Damari. 

Israeli authorities have yet to confirm the names of the hostages to be released. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated, “A list of kidnapped women has been received by the mediators. Israel’s response will be provided later.” 

Reports indicate that Israel requested civilian Arbel Yehoud to be included in the group set for release. However, her name was not listed by Hamas, raising speculation that she may be held by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group in Gaza. 

Under the terms of the ceasefire, 33 Israeli hostages are to be released over six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian detainees. 

The Gaza-based Prisoners’ Media Office released a statement confirming the planned exchange, adding, “We are waiting for the list of Palestinian prisoners to be released, which includes 120 prisoners with life sentences and 80 with high sentences, per the ceasefire agreement.” 

The process will involve handing over the Israeli hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross. They will then be transported to Israel through border crossings for medical evaluations before being flown to hospitals. The Palestinian detainees are expected to leave Ofer Prison in the West Bank late Saturday or early Sunday.
