Gunman Kills 8, Including 2 Teachers in Western Turkey

Date:

A man armed with a shotgun moved through three villages in western Turkey on Thursday, killing eight people and leaving another fighting for life before security forces tracked him down in a neighboring province, officials and Turkish media said.

The violence unfolded across rural Afyonkarahisar province, and authorities had offered no explanation for what drove the attack as of late Thursday. The Associated Press noted that one additional person was wounded in the rampage.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said three victims were discovered in the village of Ayazini, while three more were gunned down in nearby Kiyir. In a third village, Yukaritandir, two women were shot and taken to a hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, the agency said.

The Turkish daily Daily Sabah identified the two women from Yukaritandir as teachers. The provincial education directorate named them as Ayşe Sena Demir and Hilal Mete, both of whom taught at İhsaniye Yukarıtandır Secondary School, and extended its condolences to their families and to the wider teaching community.

Daily Sabah said gendarmerie units, the force responsible for policing Turkey’s rural areas, were sent to the scene after the 112 Emergency Call Center began receiving calls about gunfire and wounded people. The surviving victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, the newspaper said.

After the killings, the assailant crossed into Eskişehir province. Daily Sabah said he allegedly seized a vehicle at gunpoint in the rural Kırka neighborhood of Seyitgazi district. Acting on tips from local residents, gendarmerie teams later found his SUV mired in mud in the rural Taşlık neighborhood. Investigators recovered a pump-action shotgun and a substantial supply of ammunition from inside the vehicle.

Accounts of the manhunt’s final stage varied as the story developed. An early version of the Daily Sabah account indicated that security forces were still searching for the suspect after finding the abandoned SUV. The newspaper later said the suspect had been captured in Eskişehir, and the Afyonkarahisar Governor’s Office confirmed in a statement that the man had been caught in the neighboring province.

The governor’s office also confirmed the death toll and said relevant state institutions were coordinating to investigate the attacks and ensure the judicial process moves forward effectively.

The Afyonkarahisar Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation and assigned a deputy chief prosecutor along with three prosecutors to handle the case.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect.

A rare kind of violence in rural Turkey

The attack stands out not only for its death toll but for its geography. Ayazini, Kiyir and Yukaritandir are small rural communities, the kind of places where residents typically know one another by name and where violent crime on this scale is almost unheard of.

Ayazini is better known to outsiders for its ancient rock-carved dwellings and churches, a quiet heritage site that draws history enthusiasts rather than headlines.

The pattern of the attack, with the gunman striking in one village and then moving on to others, will likely be central to the investigation. Prosecutors will want to determine whether the victims were chosen deliberately, whether they had any connection to the attacker or to one another, and whether the killings stemmed from a personal dispute, a family feud, or something else entirely.

In rural Turkey, deadly shootings are sometimes rooted in long-running disputes over land, inheritance or family honor, but investigators had not pointed to any such cause, and any conclusion about motive at this stage would be speculation.

The deaths of the two teachers are likely to resonate far beyond Afyonkarahisar. Teachers posted to village schools in Turkey are often young educators early in their careers, assigned to remote communities where they become fixtures of local life.

Their killing at or near the school where they worked is certain to prompt renewed questions about the safety of educators in isolated postings and could draw responses from teachers’ unions and the national education ministry in the days ahead.

The speed of the arrest also offers a window into how rural policing works in Turkey. The gendarmerie, a military-linked force, carries primary responsibility for law enforcement outside city limits.

The tips from residents that led officers to the stranded SUV underline how much rural manhunts depend on local knowledge, particularly in sparsely populated terrain where a fleeing suspect can disappear quickly. The mud that trapped the vehicle may well have proven decisive.

The large cache of ammunition recovered from the SUV raises another question investigators will likely pursue: whether the attacker intended to carry out further killings had he not been stopped. It also raises the issue of how he obtained the shotgun and whether it was legally registered.

Shotguns are widely owned in rural Turkey for hunting, and the case could revive debate over firearm access and licensing, an issue that tends to resurface after high-profile shootings.

The decision to assign a deputy chief prosecutor and a team of three additional prosecutors signals that judicial authorities are treating the case with unusual seriousness.

That level of staffing suggests a broad inquiry that will likely extend beyond the shooter himself to include his movements, communications and possible relationships with the victims.

For the affected villages, the coming days will be defined by funerals and grief. Communities this small rarely experience loss on such a scale at once, and the attack is likely to leave a lasting mark on a quiet corner of western Anatolia.

Officials said further details would be released as the investigation proceeds.
