Europe-Bound Cocaine Consignments Intercepted in Sanitary Pads in Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria has intercepted multiple consignments of cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads and hair treatment cream containers destined for European countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Cyprus.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi reported on Sunday that the agency’s operatives discovered the illicit substances during examinations at three courier companies in Lagos. On September 3, 2024, officers recovered 30 parcels of cocaine weighing 1.1 kilograms hidden in hair cream containers bound for Ireland. Three days later, another 24 parcels of cocaine weighing 862 grams, similarly concealed, were intercepted en route to the UK.

In a separate operation, 525 pills of tramadol 225mg and ecstasy (MDMA) were found hidden in sanitary pads destined for Cyprus. Additionally, 200 ampoules of promethazine and pentazocine injections, concealed among food items and herbs, were seized before they could be shipped to London.

The NDLEA’s efforts extended beyond Lagos, with significant drug busts reported across Nigeria. At Port Harcourt International Airport, 550,000 pills of tramadol were intercepted on September 2 during a joint examination with Nigerian Customs Service. In Ekiti State, a joint operation with the Nigerian Army on September 3 led to the destruction of over 100,000 kilograms of cannabis spread across 51 hectares of farmland in the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve.

Kaduna State saw the arrest of eight suspects with various illicit drugs on September 6, including 305kg of cannabis and 1,300 tablets of tramadol. Operations in Jigawa, Kogi, Borno, Kano, Taraba, and Osun states resulted in multiple arrests and seizures of cannabis, tramadol, diazepam, and other controlled substances.

These interceptions highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian law enforcement in combating drug trafficking, particularly the ingenious methods employed by traffickers to conceal illicit substances in everyday items.

The NDLEA’s success in these operations underscores the agency’s commitment to disrupting drug supply chains and preventing the export of narcotics to international markets. It also raises concerns about the prevalence of pharmaceutical opioid abuse and the need for stricter controls on these substances.

As investigations continue, the NDLEA is expected to work closely with international partners to track and dismantle the networks responsible for these smuggling attempts.

Son in Custody for Allegedly Killing School Proprietress in Delta, Nigeria

The Delta State Police Command, Nigeria, has arrested Emmanuel Umukoro on suspicion of killing and burning his mother, Mrs. Fatima Umukoro, a school proprietress in the Warri area of Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred late Saturday night, shocking neighbors and the local community. Eyewitnesses described the scene as gruesome and horrific.

An eyewitness, identified only as Umoh, reported that neighbors became suspicious when they noticed the gate of the Umukoro residence left open around 10 pm, which was unusual for the household. Upon investigation, neighbors discovered a fire inside the house with the door left open.

“When neighbours checked on the residence of the Umukoro late that night, they were shocked to discover fire coming from inside the house with the door left open. Upon entering the house, they found the lifeless body of Mrs. Umukoro, burnt beyond recognition,” Umoh stated.

Neighbors also reported seeing Emmanuel Umukoro driving away from the compound at high speed in his mother’s car around 8:30 pm, raising further suspicions.

The suspect was subsequently apprehended by police along the Sapele-Warri Road as he allegedly attempted to flee to an unknown destination.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident on Sunday. “The son is in police custody now but cannot say whether he’s the one who killed her until an investigation is concluded,” Edafe stated.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, where Mrs. Umukoro was known as a respected school proprietress. The motive for the alleged matricide remains unclear as the investigation continues.

This incident highlights the issue of domestic violence and familial homicides in Nigeria, a problem that continues to concern law enforcement and social welfare organizations across the country.

As the investigation unfolds, local authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the case.

Torrential Floods Kill Several People in Southeastern Morocco

0

Exceptional rainfall has caused devastating floods in southern Morocco, resulting in at least 11 deaths and leaving nine people missing, authorities reported on Sunday. The floods have wreaked havoc across 17 prefectures and provinces, causing significant damage to infrastructure and disrupting essential services.

Interior Ministry spokesman Rachid Khalfi told AFP that the death toll includes seven fatalities in the province of Tata, located about 740 kilometers south of Rabat, and two in Errachidia, nearly 500 kilometers east of Marrakesh. One of the victims was identified as a foreign national, though no further details were provided.

The flooding, described by meteorological officials as an “exceptional” climate phenomenon, has led to the collapse of 40 homes and damaged 93 roads. Khalfi reported that electricity, drinking water, and telephone networks have been severely affected in several villages.

Lhoussaine Youabd, spokesman for the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology, explained that the region has been hit by “an extremely unstable tropical air mass,” resulting in the formation of volatile and violent clouds. The Ouarzazate region received 47 millimeters of rain in just three hours, while Tagounite, near the Algerian border, saw approximately 170 millimeters.

Local resident Omar Gana told AFP, “We haven’t seen such rain for about 10 years,” highlighting the unusual nature of the rainfall in this typically arid region.

The floods have particularly impacted areas of Morocco that have been suffering from drought for at least six years. By the end of August, dam levels in the country had shrunk to less than 28 percent of capacity due to prolonged water stress.

The extreme weather has also affected neighboring Algeria, where civil defense reported one death in Illizi, about 1,900 kilometers south of Algiers, and one person missing due to flooding in the south. Algerian authorities have been involved in rescuing families trapped by flooded rivers in southern regions.

Social media videos have shown typically arid areas of the Sahara desert inundated with water, while in Morocco’s Ouarzazate, entire streets were submerged.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, Moroccan authorities are grappling with the immediate crisis while also considering long-term implications for water management and infrastructure resilience in a region increasingly affected by extreme weather events.

Italy Recovers Six Bodies off Sicily Coast, Suspected Migrants from Recent Shipwreck

Italian authorities on Sunday recovered six decomposed bodies off the coast of Sicily, believed to be migrants who went missing in a recent shipwreck, according to local media reports.

The bodies were discovered near Sicily’s southwestern coast and subsequently transported to Lampedusa, an Italian island approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles) away. Officials suspect these individuals were part of a group that departed from Libya on September 1 and encountered tragedy at sea.

This discovery is linked to an incident earlier in the week when the Italian Coast Guard rescued seven Syrian nationals from a half-sunken boat southwest of Lampedusa on Wednesday. The survivors recounted a harrowing tale of their journey, revealing that 21 of the original 28 passengers, including three children, had fallen into the sea due to rough weather conditions.

One survivor, who remained unnamed, told Italian media, “We left Sabrata, Libya, on Sunday afternoon. Onboard were all Sudanese and Syrians. The boat capsized after a day at sea… Everyone fell into the water because the weather was bad and the sea was rough. We tried to save our companions but there was nothing we could do.”

Lampedusa Mayor Filippo Mannino described the discovery as “another tragedy” in the ongoing migration crisis. “We hoped, in the hours following the rescue of the 7 Syrians, that the coast guard patrol boats would be able to find the missing alive. But the passing of time has made us lose all hope,” Mannino said, as reported by local media.

This incident underscores the perilous nature of the central Mediterranean Sea crossing, one of the world’s deadliest migration routes. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 2,500 migrants died or went missing attempting this crossing in 2023, with 1,116 such cases recorded since the beginning of 2024.

Despite these dangers, over 43,000 migrants have reached Italy so far in 2024, though this number represents a decrease from previous years, according to data from Italy’s Interior Ministry.

The ongoing migration crisis remains a contentious political issue in Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, was elected in October 2022 on a platform that promised to reduce the number of migrants making the dangerous journey from Africa to Europe by sea.

As Italian authorities continue their investigation into this latest tragedy, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of irregular migration and the ongoing challenges faced by both migrants and European nations in addressing this complex issue.

Ex-General Warns Putin’s Reign May End as Oligarchs Face Financial Pressure

Former U.S. Army Commander Lieutenant General Ben Hodges has suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s grip on power could be threatened by his own oligarch supporters if the war in Ukraine continues to drain their resources.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Hodges outlined how Western sanctions imposed on Russian oligarchs since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine might eventually lead to Putin’s downfall. These sanctions, which include travel bans and asset freezes, have significantly disrupted the international business dealings of Russia’s wealthy elite.

“At some point the oligarchs, the inner circle, have got to get tired of all the restrictions on them, including on their fortunes,” Hodges told The Sun. He added, “At some point, they will say ‘I can’t go see my mistress on the Adriatic. I can’t send my kids to school in London anymore or Stanford’. Then I think potentially something happens.”

Hodges emphasized the importance of isolating Russia diplomatically, economically, politically, and militarily from the rest of the world. He stated, “The defeat of Russia must be our strategic objective, that means we will do everything necessary to achieve it.”

The ex-general also suggested that Putin could be overthrown by his own citizens if public trust in his leadership begins to wane. Despite Putin’s recent electoral victory, securing 87% of the votes and extending his rule until at least 2030, Hodges believes that internal dissent could eventually emerge.

“The Russian people have to decide when they’ve had enough,” Hodges said. “You don’t really see protests on the street in Russia the way you did even in Minsk in Belarus or even in Iran’s capital Tehran. You don’t see that in Russia. And I think that at some point that will change. I don’t know when they finally crack.”

These comments come as Putin has recently signaled a willingness to negotiate, suggesting that China, India, and Brazil could act as mediators in potential peace talks. However, Putin has previously insisted on retaining occupied Ukrainian territory in any settlement.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to escalate. Recent Russian attacks on Lviv in western Ukraine resulted in civilian casualties, including the tragic loss of an entire family. These ongoing hostilities underscore the urgency of finding a resolution to the conflict, which has now lasted over two and a half years.

As the situation develops, the international community watches closely to see whether the financial pressure on Russian oligarchs and growing discontent among Russian citizens could indeed lead to significant changes in the Kremlin’s leadership and policies.

Two NATO Members Report Russian Drone Violations of Airspace

Two NATO member countries, Romania and Latvia, reported violations of their airspace by Russian drones on Sunday, raising tensions in the region amid ongoing Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defense announced that a Russian drone entered its airspace early Sunday morning during Moscow’s strikes on Ukrainian civilian targets and port infrastructure along the Danube River. In response, Romania deployed F-16 warplanes to monitor its airspace and issued text alerts to residents in two eastern regions.

Romanian authorities are investigating a potential “impact zone” in an uninhabited area near the Romanian-Ukrainian border. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were reported.

Later on Sunday, Latvia’s Defense Minister Andris Sprūds revealed that a Russian drone had crashed near the town of Rezekne the previous day. Sprūds suggested the drone likely strayed into Latvian airspace from neighboring Belarus, a close ally of Russia.

Rezekne, with a population of over 25,000, is located approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of Russia and 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Belarus.

While such incursions into Latvian airspace are rare, Romania has reported drone fragments on its territory several times since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, most recently in July.

NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary-general, Mircea Geoană, condemned Russia’s violation of Romanian airspace on social media platform X, stating, “While we have no information indicating an intentional attack by Russia against Allies, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous.”

Latvia’s military said there were no indications of intentional action by Russia or Belarus in sending the drone into their country. Defense Minister Sprūds downplayed the incident, confirming no casualties or property damage, but acknowledged it as a “serious incident” and a reminder of the challenges posed by neighboring countries.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the incursions “a reminder (that) the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation go beyond Ukraine’s borders,” urging maximum support for Ukraine from NATO allies.

These airspace violations occurred as Russian forces continued their attacks on Ukrainian territory. In the northern city of Sumy, a nighttime Russian airstrike killed two civilians and wounded four others, including two children. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have struck foreign pro-Kyiv fighters in a nearby village.

Russian forces also shelled areas in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, resulting in multiple civilian casualties. The death toll from a massive Russian missile strike on a military academy and hospital in Poltava last Tuesday rose to 58, with over 320 wounded.

As the conflict continues, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suggested that future peace talks should include Russia, a stance he says is shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, Zelenskyy has not immediately commented on Scholz’s remarks.

Philippines Arrests Apollo Quiboloy, Celebrity Pastor Accused of Sex Crimes

Philippine authorities on Sunday announced the arrest of Apollo Quiboloy, an influential evangelist preacher accused of sex trafficking and sexual abuse. Quiboloy, who calls himself the “owner of the universe” and “appointed son of god,” has been a fugitive facing charges of child and sexual abuse, as well as human trafficking allegations.

Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. confirmed the arrest on his Facebook page, stating simply, “Apollo Quiboloy has been caught,” without providing specific details about the arrest operation.

Quiboloy, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing, is also listed on the FBI’s “most wanted” list in the United States. He faces separate charges there for sex trafficking and bulk cash smuggling.

The arrest comes after an extensive search operation involving over 2,000 police officers. Since last month, authorities had been searching a sprawling compound in the southern city of Davao owned by Quiboloy’s church, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), suspecting he might be hiding in a bunker on the premises.

Philippine police spokesperson Jean Fajardo confirmed to reporters that Quiboloy was captured inside the compound. Later, Fajardo revealed that Quiboloy and four co-accused were transported by military plane to the capital region on Sunday night after surrendering to authorities. The group is now detained at a facility within the national police headquarters.

“At around 1:30 pm (0530 GMT), a negotiation took place for their surrender because we gave them a 24-hour ultimatum,” Fajardo explained to reporters.

Quiboloy commands a following of millions in the Philippines, where religious leaders often wield significant influence in politics. He is known for his close friendship with former president Rodrigo Duterte.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has drawn international attention. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Philippine authorities in addressing allegations of abuse within powerful religious organizations.

As the legal process unfolds, the case is likely to be closely watched both in the Philippines and internationally, given Quiboloy’s high profile and the serious nature of the charges against him.

Croatia Edges Poland 1-0 in UEFA Nations League Clash

0

Croatia secured their fourth consecutive home victory with a clean sheet, defeating Poland 1-0 in a tightly contested UEFA Nations League match on Saturday. The result mirrored their last encounter in 2008, maintaining Croatia’s strong home form which has seen them lose only once in their last eight matches.

The hosts dominated the first half, with Duje Caleta-Car forcing Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski into an early save with a close-range header. Veteran midfielder Luka Modrić came close to opening the scoring with a long-range effort that whistled just wide. Striker Igor Matanović had a hat-trick of chances but failed to find the target, while Poland struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

Poland showed more intent after the break, with Nicola Zalewski, fresh from scoring the winner against Scotland in their previous match, testing Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković with a powerful shot that was palmed away.

The breakthrough came for Croatia shortly after, when they were awarded a dangerous free-kick. Modrić, showcasing his enduring class at 37 years old, stepped up and delicately looped the ball into the top corner, giving Croatia a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the goal, Croatia pressed for a second. Matanović hit the crossbar after a impressive solo run and later skewed wide from a promising position. Bruno Petković also came close, his curling effort tipped away by Skorupski.

Poland nearly equalized late in the game when their talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski rattled the crossbar, nearly adding to his goal from the opening match against Scotland. However, Croatia’s defense held firm to secure the vital three points.

This victory was particularly important for Croatia following their 2-1 loss to Portugal in their Nations League opener. Both Croatia and Poland now have three points from their first two matches in the competition, as they aim to qualify for the UNL play-offs.

The result underlines Croatia’s resilience at home and their ability to grind out results, while Poland will rue their missed opportunities and lack of cutting edge in the final third.

As the Nations League campaign progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances. Croatia will be encouraged by their defensive solidity and the continued influence of Modrić, while Poland will seek to address their offensive struggles and capitalize on the scoring prowess of Lewandowski.

Ronaldo Scores as Portugal Edges Scotland 2-1 in UEFA Nations League Thriller

0

Portugal secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Scotland in their UEFA Nations League (UNL) match on Saturday, maintaining their perfect start under manager Roberto Martinez. The win, however, came only after overcoming a stubborn Scottish side that has never won on Portuguese soil in eight attempts.

The match, played on Bruno Fernandes’ 30th birthday, saw the Manchester United midfielder make his 600th career appearance and earn his 72nd international cap. Despite the occasion, it was Scotland who started brighter, with Billy Gilmour and John McGinn controlling the midfield early on.

Scotland’s positive start bore fruit in the seventh minute when Kenny McLean’s cross found Scott McTominay, who powered home a header for his 10th goal in 13 international appearances. The goal stunned the home crowd and set the tone for a competitive match.

Portugal responded through Rafael Leao, whose dynamic play down the flanks caused constant problems for the Scottish defense. The AC Milan forward came close to equalizing but saw his shot hit the side netting. Leao continued to be Portugal’s main threat, forcing Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn into several saves and creating chances for his teammates.

As halftime approached, Portugal intensified their pressure. Andre Silva missed a header, while Diogo Jota and Nuno Mendes both came close to equalizing, with Gunn making crucial saves to preserve Scotland’s lead.

The second half saw Martinez introduce Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh off scoring his 900th career goal. The change proved pivotal as Portugal’s attack gained new life. The equalizer came through birthday boy Fernandes, who drilled a first-time shot into the bottom corner after a setup from the ever-dangerous Leao.

Portugal continued to press, with Joao Felix having a diving header saved and Ronaldo twice hitting the woodwork. The Portuguese captain’s persistence paid off in the 88th minute when he prodded home Nuno Mendes’ cross for his 901st career goal, securing the win for the hosts.

The victory puts Portugal atop Group 1 of UNL League A, while Scotland, despite a valiant effort, suffered their second late defeat in a week. Steve Clarke’s side showed promise but will need to address their late-game management moving forward.

This thrilling encounter showcased Portugal’s depth and resilience, while also highlighting Scotland’s ability to compete with Europe’s elite. As the UNL progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances in this closely contested match.

Spain Dominates Switzerland 4-1 in UEFA Nations League Despite Red Card

0

Reigning European champions Spain showcased their resilience and attacking prowess, comprehensively defeating Switzerland 4-1 in their UEFA Nations League Group A4 match on Sunday. The victory was all the more impressive as Spain played with 10 men for 70 minutes following a red card.

In rainy conditions at Stade de Genève, Spain’s Fabian Ruiz starred with a brace, leading his team to a convincing win that extends their competitive unbeaten run to 17 matches.

The match began with Switzerland, under coach Murat Yakin, pushing forward after a disappointing loss to Denmark. However, Spain’s attack quickly overshadowed the hosts’ early efforts.

Just four minutes in, Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal outpaced Remo Freuler to deliver a chip to the far post, where Joselu headed home despite Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s acrobatic attempt to save.

Switzerland appeared to equalize moments later through Becir Omeragic, but the goal was disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

Spain doubled their lead when Yamal, again instrumental, won possession and fed Nico Williams. Though Williams’ shot was saved, Fabian Ruiz, key to Spain’s recent European triumph, netted the rebound.

The game’s dynamics shifted dramatically when Spain’s Robin Le Normand received a straight red card for fouling Breel Embolo as the last defender. Switzerland capitalized on the man advantage, with Zeki Amdouni hitting the crossbar from the resulting free-kick before later halving the deficit, tapping in after an Embolo header from a corner.

Soccer Football – Nations League – League A – Group 4 – Switzerland v Spain – Stade de Geneve, Geneva, Switzerland – September 8, 2024 Spain’s Fabian Ruiz celebrates scoring their third goal with Ferran Torres and Joselu REUTERS/Denis Balibouse

Despite Switzerland’s increased possession in the second half, Spain’s 10 men remarkably extended their lead. David Raya’s long ball found Ferran Torres, whose cross was met by Ruiz for his second goal. Moments later, Joselu’s through ball set up Torres to score Spain’s fourth, sealing the victory.

This result puts Spain back on track as favorites to retain their UEFA Nations League title. For Switzerland, the defeat raises questions about their defensive vulnerabilities despite playing against 10 men for much of the match.

Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente will be particularly pleased with his team’s ability to overcome the numerical disadvantage and maintain their attacking threat throughout the game.
