Ghana’s Wa Killings Continue: Bus Conductor Found Dead, Bringing Total to 17

The series of unexplained deaths known as the ‘Wa killings’ in Upper West Region, Ghana has claimed another victim. Police discovered the body of Richard Opoku, a male bus conductor, in the early hours of Monday, July 15, bringing the total number of victims to 17 in a relatively short period.

The deceased was found behind a trailer with his throat slit, adding to the growing concern over public safety in the region. According to sources, Opoku had accompanied a salt-transporting trailer to Wa. Unable to offload the cargo upon arrival, he spent the night at the salt owner’s house. Tragically, his body was discovered the following morning, with traces of blood leading from the veranda to behind the house.

In response to this latest incident, police have arrested the salt owner and the trailer driver for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation. The recurring nature of these killings has sparked fear among local residents, leading to what some describe as a “self-imposed curfew” in the area.

Rashid Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Ghana has called for intensified efforts from security services to apprehend those responsible for these mysterious killings. He expressed concern over the advertising of secret societies on local radio, questioning why such potentially illegal organizations are not being investigated.

Similarly, Yusif Sulemana, the MP for Bole, has urged Ghana Interior Minister Henry Quartey to implement measures to end the Wa killings. Sulemana highlighted the impact on daily life, noting that by 8:30 pm, streets are nearly deserted as residents retreat indoors out of fear.

This ongoing crisis has raised serious questions about public safety and the effectiveness of current security measures in the Upper West Region. As investigations continue, there is growing pressure on authorities to provide answers and ensure the safety of local residents.

The Wa killings serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing law enforcement in Ghana and the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address violent crime and protect vulnerable communities. As the region grapples with this wave of violence, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on Wa, awaiting resolution and justice for the victims and their families.

Rwanda Holds Presidential Election with Kagame Expected to Extend Rule

Rwandans headed to the polls on Monday in a presidential and legislative election that is widely expected to extend the 30-year rule of President Paul Kagame. The election has drawn international attention, highlighting Rwanda’s political landscape and Kagame’s enduring influence.

Election authorities report 9.5 million registered voters out of a population of 14 million. Polling stations in the capital, Kigali, saw long lines with some voters arriving as early as 5 a.m., indicating high voter engagement. One first-time voter, Jean Claude Nkurunziza, expressed his support for Kagame, stating, “I am voting for President Kagame because I have never seen a leader like him before.”

Kagame faces minimal opposition from Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana. Both challengers struggled to gain traction during their campaigns. Given Kagame’s previous electoral performance – he won nearly 99% of the vote in 2017 – a similar result is anticipated this time.

The 66-year-old Kagame has been a dominant figure in Rwandan politics since 1994, when he led rebels to end the genocide. His rule has been marked by economic growth but also criticized for authoritarianism. A 2015 referendum lifted presidential term limits, potentially allowing Kagame to remain in power until 2034.

Kagame’s leadership continues to divide opinion, with some praising Rwanda’s development under his rule while others condemn his authoritarian tendencies. The president himself told reporters on Saturday that his mandate comes from the people.

The election process and its outcome will likely reignite debates about long-standing leadership in Africa and the balance between economic development and political freedoms. As provisional results are expected later on Monday, the international community will be closely watching this pivotal moment in Rwanda’s political journey.

This election serves as a significant indicator of Rwanda’s political trajectory and raises questions about the future of democracy in the region. The high voter turnout and Kagame’s expected victory underscore his enduring influence on Rwandan politics and society, while also prompting discussions about political diversity and opposition in the country.

A car loaded with explosives detonated outside the establishment.

A staff member at the coffee shop reported that customers inside survived the blast. “We have confirmed five deaths so far and twenty others wounded. Most of the casualties were among those who were outside. Fortunately, everyone inside survived, but there was extensive damage to vehicles and properties,” said Mohamud Salad.

A spokesman for Somali police confirmed that at least 20 people were injured. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

Restaurateurs Pledge to Prohibit Kanye West and Bianca Censori After Recent X-Rated Stunt

After a series of outings and outfits that have sparked controversy in the Los Angeles dining scene, restaurateurs are threatening to ban rapper Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, from their establishments. They based their decisions on Censori’s recent appearance in an extremely revealing outfit at a local barbecue restaurant.

The couples most recent appearance sparking debate on appropriate dining attire and public decency

On Saturday, Censori, a 29-year-old Australian architect, was seen wearing a barely-there bra top that left little to the imagination. The couple’s choice of attire for their public outing has ignited a heated debate about appropriate dress codes in restaurants and public spaces.

Restaurant owners and managers have expressed their disapproval, with many vowing to refuse entry to the couple if they attempt to dine in similar attire. One restaurateur commented, “I wouldn’t have them in my restaurant. It is totally inappropriate and not a good role model for young children to witness this in public.

The controversy has highlighted changing attitudes towards dress codes in dining establishments. Some observers noted the stark contrast with past practices, stating, “You used to get refused entry due to dress codes to a restaurant if you didn’t wear a tie. How times have changed; now you can enter and dine almost naked.”

This incident is not isolated, as Censori has become known for her risqué outfits since her relationship with West began. Some have drawn parallels to West’s previous marriage to Kim Kardashian, noting his influence on his partners’ fashion choices.

The situation has sparked a broader discussion about celebrity influence, public decency, and the responsibilities of restaurant owners to maintain certain standards. While some argue for the couple’s right to dress as they please, others emphasize the importance of considering other diners and maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere in public spaces.

The debate continues, raising questions about the potential spread of these bans and their potential impact on the couple’s future dining choices in Los Angeles and beyond. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension between personal expression, celebrity culture, and societal norms in public spaces.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Senior Hamas Commander Rafa Salama; Over 90 Dead in Gaza Strike

Gaza City, Gaza, July 2024 – The Israeli military reported that senior Hamas commander Rafa Salama was killed in an airstrike in Gaza on Saturday. While Hamas has not confirmed the report, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza stated that the Israeli strike hit a camp for displaced people in a designated humanitarian zone in Khan Younis, killing at least 90 Palestinians and injuring 239 others.

Israel stated that the strike was targeting senior Hamas leaders, but Hamas claims the attack was on “fields” and serves to “justify” the attack. Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least five “big warplanes bombing in the middle of Al Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis.”

Most of the injured were taken to the nearby Nasser hospital. However, officials and medics reported that the facility is “no longer able to function” as doctors are “overwhelmed with large numbers of casualties.” Speaking to Newshour on the BBC World Service, Dr. Mohammed Abu Rayya, who was at the hospital dealing with the aftermath, said the majority of the injured were suffering from multiple shrapnel wounds. “It was like being in hell,” he said, adding that many of the casualties were civilians, including women and children.

The Israeli army confirmed that Salama, commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, was one of the “masterminds” of the October 7 attack and a close associate of Mohammed Deif, the top commander of Hamas’ military wing. A military spokesperson stated that Salama’s death “significantly impedes Hamas’ military capabilities.”

It is not known whether Deif was killed. The Israeli army said he was also targeted.

Mohammed Deif has been Israel’s most wanted man for decades and is blamed by Israel for the killings of multiple civilians and soldiers.

According to a senior Hamas official, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA) said Salama joined Hamas in the early 1990s and quickly rose to the position of commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, the military wing of Hamas.
