Chad Daybell Sentenced to Death for Brutal Triple Murder of His First Wife and Two Young Stepchildren

0

Chad Daybell, the self-proclaimed “Doomsday prophet,” was given the death penalty for killing his ex-wife and co-conspirator Lori Vallow’s two children in a chilling triple murder case that rattled the state of Idaho. Daybell, 55, remained stone-faced as the sentence was handed down on Saturday, with the Idaho jury unanimously agreeing on imposing the death penalty.

After a nearly two-month trial, Daybell was found guilty on Thursday of killing Tammy Daybell, Joshua ‘JJ’ Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16. He declined to make a statement after becoming the ninth person on Idaho’s death row.

Before the jury began deliberating on sentencing, family members gave impact statements to the court, reported 12News. Colby Ryan, Tylee and JJ’s brother and Lori’s only living child, said, “It’s not an overstatement to say that I lost everything, but more importantly we all lost Tylee and JJ. I stand here today motherless, fatherless, sisterless and brotherless.”

Tylee Ryan’s aunt, Annie Cushing, described her as “intelligent, clever, funny, sarcastic and had the voice of an angel.”

During the summer of 2020, the remains of the children were discovered on Daybell’s Fremont County, Idaho property. Police believe the bodies were buried by Daybell sometime between September of 2019 and June of 2020. Tammy Daybell died in 2019, mere weeks ahead of Chad and Lori Vallow’s wedding. Though her death was initially believed to be due to natural causes, her corpse was later exhumed and, following an autopsy, it was determined that she had been suffocated to death.

Daybell and Lori Vallow were indicted in 2021 on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and grand theft by deception in the children’s deaths. The pair were slapped with a handful of additional charges relating to Tammy’s death. Last year, Vallow was convicted and handed a sentence of multiple life sentences behind bars without the possibility of parole.

During his trial, Daybell was accused of crafting an alternate reality so that he could fulfill “his desire for sex, money and power.” Prosecutor Rob Wood said, “When he had a chance at what he considered his rightful destiny, he made sure no person and no law would stand in his way.”

Prosecutors, who called 67 witnesses throughout the trial, said the couple justified the three killings by creating a detailed and apocalyptic belief system, part of an elaborate scheme to eliminate any obstacles to their relationship and to obtain money from survivor benefits and life insurance.

Daybell’s defense attorney John Prior presented a different picture to jurors, noting that Chad Daybell was a religious person but suggested that his belief in things like premonitions were fairly mainstream. Prior also explained to jurors that Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, had a violent history, having previously been convicted of attacking Vallow Daybell’s third husband and shooting and killing her fourth husband.

Daybell’s attorney argued that his client lived a normal, faith-focused life before he met Lori Vallow Daybell, who he said showered Daybell with attention. His legal team described her as a “beautiful, vivacious person” who drew Daybell into an extramarital relationship. They also said he would present several experts in DNA, forensics and pathology who would testify that it’s impossible to determine what caused Tammy Daybell’s death and that none of Chad Daybell’s DNA was found with the children’s bodies.

ANC Party Loses 30-Year Majority in Landmark South African Election

0

In a historic election result, the African National Congress (ANC) party lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid 30 years ago. This significant shift in South Africa’s political landscape was confirmed on Saturday, signaling a new direction for the nation.

With over 99% of votes counted from Wednesday’s election, the ANC received just over 40% of the vote, falling short of the majority it has held since the pivotal 1994 all-race vote that ended apartheid and brought Nelson Mandela to power. While the final results are pending formal declaration by the independent electoral commission, it is clear the ANC will not surpass the 50% threshold.

The electoral commission had initially stated it would formally declare the results by Sunday, though this may happen sooner.

Opposition parties have hailed the outcome as a groundbreaking development for a country grappling with severe poverty and inequality. Despite its diminished majority, the ANC remains the largest party and will likely need to form a coalition to retain governance and reelect President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second term. The South African president is elected by Parliament following national elections.

“The way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC’s majority and we have done that,” said John Steenhuisen, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA).

The path forward is complex for Africa’s most advanced economy, as no coalition has yet been solidified. The DA secured around 21% of the vote, while the newly formed MK Party of former President Jacob Zuma, who has since turned against the ANC, garnered just over 14%. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) trailed with slightly more than 9%.

More than 50 parties participated in the election, many receiving minimal vote shares. The DA and MK Party are the most viable coalition partners for the ANC, considering the significant gap from a majority. The urgency to form a coalition is heightened as Parliament must convene and elect a president within 14 days of the official declaration of final results, prompting a flurry of likely intricate negotiations.

Steenhuisen expressed the DA’s openness to coalition talks. However, the MK Party stipulated that any agreement would require the removal of Ramaphosa as ANC leader and president, highlighting the intense political rivalry between Zuma, who resigned amid corruption allegations in 2018, and Ramaphosa, his successor.

“We are willing to negotiate with the ANC, but not the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa,” said Nhlamulo Ndlela, MK Party spokesperson.

Both the MK Party and the far-left EFF advocate for nationalizing parts of the economy. The DA is perceived as a business-friendly party, and analysts suggest an ANC-DA coalition would be more favorable to foreign investors, although its political feasibility is uncertain given the DA’s longstanding criticism of the ANC.

An ANC-DA coalition “would be a marriage of two drunk people in Las Vegas. It will never work,” stated Gayton McKenzie, leader of the smaller Patriotic Alliance party, to South African media.

Despite the uncertainty, opposition parties celebrated the new political scenario as a vital change for South Africa, a nation of 62 million that, while being Africa’s most developed, is also one of the most unequal.

South Africa suffers from pervasive poverty and extremely high unemployment rates, with the ANC struggling to improve living standards for millions. The official unemployment rate stands at 32%, one of the highest globally, with poverty disproportionately affecting Black people, who comprise 80% of the population and have traditionally supported the ANC.

The ANC has faced criticism and voter backlash for failing to provide basic government services, leaving many without essential amenities like water, electricity, or proper housing.

Nearly 28 million South Africans were registered to vote, with turnout expected to be around 60%, according to the independent electoral commission.

Marian Robinson, Mother of Michelle Obama, Dies at 86

Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, has passed away at the age of 86, according to a family statement shared with NBC News.

“She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” the statement said. The family statement comes from Michelle and Barack Obama; Craig Robinson and his wife, Kelly; and Marian Robinson’s grandchildren, Avery, Leslie, Malia, Sasha, Austin, and Aaron.

Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Robinson became known as the nation’s first grandmother after her son-in-law, Barack Obama, won the 2008 presidential election. She was a consistent presence in the White House during his eight-year tenure, maintaining a low profile while attending holiday events, overseas trips, and concerts in the East Room. Most importantly, she spent a significant amount of time with her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia.

Having lived in Chicago her entire life, Robinson agreed to move to Washington, D.C., in 2009 to reside in the White House and help care for her granddaughters, who were seven and ten years old at the time. In a CBS interview, she later explained, “I felt like this was going to be a very hard life for both of them. And I was worried about their safety, and I was worried about my grandkids. That’s what got me to move to D.C.”

In their statement, Robinson’s family noted she agreed to leave Chicago with “a healthy nudge.” They said, “We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all.” The statement highlighted her joy in being a grandmother, adding, “Although she enforced whatever household rules we’d set for bedtime, watching TV, or eating candy, she made clear that she sided with her ‘grandbabies’ in thinking that their parents were too darn strict.”

Robinson was born in Chicago in 1937 and grew up on the city’s South Side, where she raised her daughter and son, Craig Robinson. She was married to Fraser Robinson, who passed away in 1991 from multiple sclerosis.

Former President Barack Obama once described his mother-in-law as “the least pretentious person I know.” Indeed, Robinson admitted in the CBS interview that it was a “huge adjustment” being waited on by White House residence staff, whom she eventually convinced to let her do her own laundry. The family statement shared fond memories of her simple pleasures, saying, “Rather than hobnobbing with Oscar winners or Nobel laureates, she preferred spending her time upstairs with a TV tray, in the room outside her bedroom with big windows that looked out at the Washington Monument. The only guest she made a point of asking to meet was the Pope.”

Barack Obama credited Robinson with keeping his daughters grounded during their time in the White House. “She’s down to Earth and she doesn’t understand all the fuss,” he said in an interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Michelle Obama was deeply close to her mother. Robinson narrated the biographical video introducing her daughter at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. After leaving the White House, Robinson humorously remarked, “My saying is when I grow up, I would like to be like Michelle Obama.”

Recently, Michelle Obama honored her mother on Mother’s Day by announcing that an exhibit at the Obama Presidential Center Museum in Chicago would be named after her. “In so many ways, she fostered in me a deep sense of confidence in who I was and who I could be by teaching me how to think for myself, how to use my own voice, and how to understand my own worth,” Michelle Obama said in a video announcement. “I simply wouldn’t be who I am today without my mom.”

The family’s statement concluded with a heartfelt tribute: “There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of our lives trying to live up to her example.”

President Joe Biden announced on Friday that Israel has proposed a three-part plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza, leading to a permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages who have been held for the past eight months.

Speaking from the White House, Biden revealed that this proposal comes after extensive diplomatic efforts by his team. The plan has been communicated to Hamas through Qatar, a key mediator in the negotiations.

The first phase of the plan involves a six-week complete ceasefire, during which Israeli forces would withdraw from populated areas of Gaza. In return, women and children hostages would be released, Biden stated. This phase also includes a significant increase in humanitarian aid, with 600 trucks carrying assistance into Gaza daily.

Biden acknowledged the potential challenges in moving from the initial phase to the next. “I’ll be honest with you, there are a number of things to be negotiated to move from phase one to phase two,” he said.

Phase two, according to Biden, would not commence until all necessary agreements are secured. This stage involves the release of all living hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

The final phase focuses on the commencement of a substantial reconstruction plan in Gaza, along with the return of any remaining hostages’ remains to their families.

“I’ve urged the leadership in Israel to stand behind this deal, regardless of whatever [political] pressure comes,” Biden emphasized.

Police Arrest Suspect in Gang Rape and Murder of Pastor’s Pregnant Wife in Nigeria

0

In a shocking case of violence, the Rivers State Police Command, south Nigeria has apprehended a suspect identified as Emeka, who allegedly orchestrated the gang rape and murder of Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward, the pregnant wife of a pastor, in the Abarikpo community of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Rivers State.

According to reports, Emeka had a quarrel with Mrs. Steward earlier on February 12, 2023, during which she called him a “wicked man.” In retaliation, Emeka allegedly threatened her, saying, “You will see wickedness today.” Later that night, around 1 am, Emeka and his gang broke into the Steward family’s home, kidnapped the five-month pregnant woman, and took her to an unknown location.

Lawyer Steward, the deceased’s husband and an Assistant Pastor with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Abarikpo, confirmed the suspect’s arrest on Thursday. He recounted the harrowing events, stating that Emeka and his gang, whom he alleges are members of the ‘In Iceland’ cult group, raped and strangled his wife to death at their hideout.

The victim’s body was discovered several hours after her abduction near a fishing pond, with multiple bruises and bleeding from her vagina. It is reported that Mrs. Steward was known for her vocal opposition to criminal and cult activities in the Abarikpo community.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, said she would seek information from the Divisional Police Officer and provide an update. However, a senior police officer who requested anonymity confirmed that two other suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime, in addition to Emeka. The officer stated, “It was not only Emeka. Two others were also arrested by the Ahoada Police Division. They are all in custody.”

The brutal gang rape and murder of a pregnant woman have sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted the urgent need to address the issues of violence, cult activities, and crime in the area. The victim’s husband has called for government intervention to ensure that justice prevails in this deeply distressing case.

As the investigation continues, the Rivers State Police Command is expected to provide further updates on the progress of the case and the fate of the arrested suspects. The community remains in mourning, seeking solace, and demanding swift action against those responsible for this heinous act.

Trump’s Campaign Website Crashed Amid Huge Donations Following a Guilty Verdict

0

WinRed, an online payment service that handles contributions to Republican campaigns, collapsed on Thursday due to an increase in the amount of money donated to former President Donald Trump, according to an announcement made by his campaign.

In the hush money trial that Trump was facing, a jury in Manhattan convicted him of 34 felony charges of falsifying company records. This led to the emergence of technical problems. Following the decision, there was a notable rise in the amount of money donated to Trump’s campaign.

To explain that they were trying to get the website back up, the Trump team went to X (which was once known as Twitter). The campaign released a statement on Friday, claiming to have collected a record $34.8 million from small donations.

It appears that the website is once again accessible as of Friday morning. Donors encounter a banner on the website, referring to Donald Trump as a “political prisoner.” The banner also includes a photograph of Trump taken in Fulton County, Georgia, with the message “never surrender.

The website suggests various contribution amounts, including $20.24 for supporting President Trump in 2024, $47 for believing that Donald J. Trump is the greatest president of all time, and $100 for believing that President Trump has done nothing wrong. Additionally, it has a button that allows people to make a donation of up to $3,300, which is the maximum amount that the Federal Election Commission (FEC) permits for individuals.

A number of influential people went to social media in order to persuade their followers to make higher donations to the Trump campaign. Despite the fact that they may have to “go without a meal,” political analyst Laura Loomer advised that everyone of her one million followers contribute $5 to Trump’s campaign finance campaign.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Republican from Colorado, stated that the sudden collapse of WinRed was due to the large number of individuals contributing to Trump’s campaign. It’s evident that the Democrats are unaware of the consequences of their recent actions.

Massachusetts Captured Wanted Brazilian Migrant Drug Trafficker, Robber

0

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers announced the apprehension of a Brazilian migrant fugitive wanted in his home country on drug trafficking and robbery charges on Thursday.

Officials say they encountered the 32-year-old man during a traffic stop in Framingham, Massachusetts, earlier this month. He is now in ICE custody, awaiting deportation.

The individual has allegedly had a Brazilian warrant out for his arrest since 2022. In 2017, a Brazilian court sentenced the man to over 17 years in prison, according to ICE.

Border Patrol agents say they first arrested the individual in March 2023 after he and his family illegally entered the U.S. in Arizona. Officers issued the family a notice to appear in immigration court at the time, ICE said.

“This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country and hide out in Massachusetts,” Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons said. “He represents a significant threat to the residents of our neighborhoods. We will not allow New England to become a safe haven for the world’s criminals. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from our communities.”

Massachusetts has spent nearly $400,000 to review the vaccine records of migrants and other individuals staying in its shelters, according to a recent state financial report. That sum comes amid $591 million in spending on the state’s “emergency housing assistance program.”

ICE officials continue to capture migrants with criminal pasts across the East Coast. Officers this week announced the arrest of a Dominican Republic national in Baltimore with an outstanding warrant for manslaughter.

16-Year-Old Robber Mistakenly Shoots Gang-Mate During CTA Train Mugging

0

A 16-year-old boy inadvertently shot his 17-year-old accomplice while robbing an 18-year-old man aboard a Green Line train in Chicago, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). Both teenagers have been apprehended and charged in connection with the incident.

The robbery took place around 10 p.m. on Wednesday near the King Drive station. According to police and witness statements, the younger boy brandished a firearm as the duo robbed the victim. During the course of the robbery, the 16-year-old accidentally discharged his weapon, striking his accomplice in the leg.

Following the shooting, both suspects fled the scene. However, approximately 45 minutes later, police responded to a person shot call in the 6400 block of South Martin Luther King Drive, where they located the two teenage suspects. Authorities also recovered a firearm at the location.

As a result of the incident, the 16-year-old suspect has been charged with discharging a firearm during an armed robbery, while his 17-year-old accomplice faces charges of armed robbery with a firearm.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with armed robberies and the potential for unintended consequences when firearms are involved. It also underscores the importance of swift police response and thorough investigations in apprehending suspects and ensuring public safety on public transportation systems.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has been working closely with law enforcement agencies to enhance security measures and prevent criminal activities on its trains and buses. Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or incidents to authorities immediately.

As the case progresses through the legal system, it serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that can result from engaging in violent criminal activities, particularly for young offenders. The incident also raises concerns about the accessibility of firearms to minors and the need for comprehensive efforts to address youth violence and crime prevention in the city.

Man Dies After Falling into Airplane Engine

0

A tragic event unfolded at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Wednesday when a person fell into a running aircraft engine and lost their life. The Netherlands Royal Military police confirmed the incident in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that they are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

Details regarding the identity of the deceased individual and whether they were a passenger or an employee have not been disclosed at this time. The incident occurred while passengers were on board the aircraft, which was bound for Billund, Denmark, according to a statement from air carrier KLM.

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Following the incident, the passengers and employees disembarked the plane and were provided with care and support. KLM expressed their commitment to taking care of those who witnessed the tragic event, stating, “We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol.”

Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, described the incident as “horrible” in a post on X. The airport’s statement read, “Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.”

Sadly, this is not the first instance of someone losing their life in such a manner. In December 2022, an airport worker died in a similar accident at the Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama after being ingested into an aircraft engine. The National Transportation Safety Board reported that the aircraft, an Embraer 170 operated by regional carrier Envoy Air, was parked at the gate with the parking brake set when the ground support personnel was ingested.

Another tragic incident occurred in December 2015 at Mumbai airport, where an engineer was sucked into the engine of an Air India plane and died. The deadly incident happened as the Airbus A319 was being towed backward from the parking bay in preparation for taxiing out, with the engineer standing near the landing gear under the plane’s nose as he supervised the process.

As the investigation into the Schiphol Airport incident continues, the aviation industry and the public are left to grapple with the devastating loss of life and the impact on those who witnessed the tragic event.

Trump’ Conviction Trends on Chinese Social Media as Many Rejoice

0

As Donald Trump became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a felony on Thursday, the historic verdict sparked huge interest – and a fair amount of schadenfreude – in China. As a rising authoritarian superpower, China has long sought to project its political system as superior to American democracy.

While Trump’s trial has bolstered that narrative, it has also highlighted a scenario unimaginable and dangerous to the ruling Chinese Communist Party: an elected leader held accountable by independent courts and prosecutors, convicted by a jury of his peers.

For months, Chinese propagandists have used Trump’s indictments to strengthen Beijing’s narrative of a United States in decline, citing the lengthy legal battle as a prime example of the polarization and dysfunction of American politics. As China woke up Friday to the news of Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, the country’s heavily censored social media lit up.

On Weibo, China’s X-like platform, the verdict became the top trending topic, racking up more than 120 million views by the afternoon. “Trump’s supporters, hurry up and mobilize, storm the Capitol,” said a top comment under a news brief by state news agency Xinhua. Another comment read: “Comrade Nation Builder Trump should not be fighting alone.”

During his time in office, the former U.S. president earned the nickname “Chuan Jianguo” or “Trump, the (Chinese) nation builder” on the Chinese internet. The nickname suggested that his isolationist foreign policy and divisive domestic agenda were actually helping Beijing to overtake Washington on the global stage. Some nationalist influencers gleefully mocked the verdict. “It seems that in 2024, a civil war in America is not just a dream!” said one such blogger with 4 million followers.

Under Xi Jinping, China’s most assertive leader in decades, the country’s social media platforms have become increasingly dominated by anti-American, nationalistic voices. “Although he is guilty, he can still run for president. A ‘criminal’ can become president – this is the ridiculous aspect of Western-style democracy,” said another commenter.

Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief of the state-run nationalist tabloid Global Times, also weighed in. “Naturally, Chinese people are watching the spectacle with amusement,” he said on Weibo. “Here’s what everyone is most concerned about: First, will Trump actually go to jail? Second, can he still run for president?”

However, analysts say Trump’s conviction could be a tricky topic for Chinese state propagandists to navigate. “On the one hand, it highlights a rotting and fracturing American democracy. On the other hand, it highlights that a former top leader can be arrested, put on trial, judged by a jury of peers, and convicted for relatively small acts of corruption,” wrote Bill Bishop, a China watcher and author of the Sinocism newsletter.

China’s judicial system remains tightly controlled by the ruling Communist Party and has a conviction rate of around 99%. The timing of the conviction also added to the sensitivity, coming just days before the 35th anniversary of Beijing’s bloody crackdown of the pro-democracy Tiananmen movement in 1989, according to Bishop.

So far, Chinese state media outlets have yet to publish the kind of blistering commentaries that previously appeared alongside news coverage of Trump’s legal entanglements. Alfred Wu, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said China’s state media is unlikely to amplify the coverage in the days ahead.

“They don’t want to attack Donald Trump because if he becomes the president, they know the consequences. Instead, they’re likely to use it to showcase the problems of the U.S. system,” said Wu, a former reporter in China. “They need to be really careful about that.”
