Rapper Sean Kingston and Mother Arrested, Put in Jail in Florida on Fraud Charges Exceeding $1 Million

0

Rapper and singer Sean Kingston, 34, has returned to South Florida, where he and his mother, 61-year-old Janice Turner, are facing charges for allegedly committing fraud amounting to more than a million dollars. Kingston was booked into the Broward County jail on Sunday after being arrested on May 23 at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California’s Mojave Desert, where he was performing. Last week, he waived his right to fight extradition in a California court and agreed to be turned over to Florida authorities.

On the same day as Kingston’s arrest, his mother was apprehended when a SWAT team raided the rapper’s rented mansion in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has charged Kingston and Turner with conducting an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, identity theft, and related crimes, according to the released arrest warrants. The warrants allege that the pair stole money, jewelry, a Cadillac Escalade, and furniture.

Kingston, a Jamaican American performer known for his 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls” and his collaboration with Justin Bieber on “Eenie Meenie,” was already serving a two-year probation sentence for trafficking stolen property. Robert Rosenblatt, an attorney representing Kingston and his mother, previously stated that they are eager to address the charges in a Florida court and are “confident of a successful resolution.”

The warrants in the case detail the alleged thefts, which occurred between October and March. The pair is accused of stealing nearly $500,000 in jewelry, more than $200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from the Escalade dealer, over $100,000 from First Republic Bank, and $86,000 from a customized bed manufacturer. However, specific details of the thefts were not provided.

This is not the first time Kingston’s mother has faced legal troubles. In 2006, Turner pleaded guilty to bank fraud for stealing over $160,000 and served nearly 1.5 years in prison, according to federal court records.

The arrest of Sean Kingston and his mother has sent shockwaves through the music industry and the South Florida community. As the case unfolds, more details are expected to emerge regarding the alleged fraudulent activities and the circumstances surrounding their arrests.

The charges against Kingston and Turner are serious, and if convicted, they could face significant prison time and fines. The case serves as a reminder that celebrities and their family members are not above the law and will face consequences for their actions.

Mother’s Heartbreaking Warning After Two Children, Aged 11 and 14, Drown in Pool During Holiday Weekend

0

In a tragic incident over the Memorial Day weekend, two children of a Philadelphia mother were taken off life support on Sunday after they drowned in a pool during a holiday party in Gloucester, New Jersey, a suburb outside of Philadelphia. Brittney McWhite, the heartbroken mother, shared her story as a stern warning to all parents while she prepares to say her final goodbyes to her 11-year-old daughter, London Marie, and her 14-year-old son, Wadale.

Recounting the horrific series of events that led to the untimely deaths of her children, McWhite told FOX 29 Philadelphia, “They weren’t in there for more than like three or four minutes. They called their names…and when they jumped in, they were at the bottom of the pool.”

The family before the tragedy.

According to McWhite, London Marie and Wadale, who could swim, decided to play a game of Marco Polo in the pool. As a mother of six, McWhite had left them unattended while she was inside helping to prepare food, believing that her children were capable of swimming on their own.

Marie.

The tragedy has left the family devastated, and McWhite is now using her heartbreaking experience to urge all parents to be vigilant when it comes to pool safety. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a fun summer activity can turn into a nightmare if proper precautions are not taken.

Wadale.

As the family mourns the loss of London Marie and Wadale, the community has rallied around them, offering support and condolences during this difficult time. The devastating incident has also sparked conversations about the importance of water safety education and the need for increased awareness about the risks associated with swimming pools, especially for children.

Grieved mother.

McWhite’s story is a powerful reminder that even when children are capable swimmers, constant supervision and vigilance are essential to prevent such tragedies from occurring. As summer approaches and more families spend time around pools, it is crucial for parents and caregivers to prioritize water safety and ensure that children are never left unattended near water, even for a brief moment.

The loss of London Marie and Wadale has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the McWhite family and the entire Philadelphia community. As they navigate through this unimaginable grief, their story serves as a poignant reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.

Nigeria Paralyzed as Nationwide Strike Shuts Down Power Grid and Disrupts Air Travel

Nigeria has been plunged into darkness and chaos as union workers, protesting for higher minimum wages, forcibly shut down the country’s power supply and brought air travel to a standstill on Monday. The indefinite strike, initiated by the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has left tens of millions without electricity and stranded passengers at major airports.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), operators were beaten and injured as they were forcibly removed from control rooms by union workers. Photos circulating on social media also showed cane-swinging union members ordering personnel of the country’s tax agency out of their offices.

The strike follows failed negotiations between the unions and the government to raise the federal minimum wage. The unions are demanding a 1,547% increase, from the current 30,000 naira ($22.4) to 494,000 naira ($369.6) per month. They are also protesting against a recent hike in electricity tariffs. The government had proposed doubling the minimum wage to 60,000 naira ($44.89), but the unions rejected this offer.

Despite being Africa’s fourth-largest economy, Nigeria’s minimum wage lags behind many other countries on the continent, such as Seychelles, where workers receive a minimum wage of $465.4 monthly.

The strike has severely impacted various sectors, including healthcare. Dr. Olusina Ajidahun, a Nigerian doctor, expressed concern about the state of the healthcare system, which he says is on the verge of collapse. His medical facility in southwest Nigeria was unable to power crucial hospital equipment due to the shutdown of the national grid.

Nigerian Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi has declared the strike illegal, calling it “premature and ineffectual” in a statement posted by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga. Onanuga also dismissed the unions’ demands as “unreasonable” in a post on the social media platform X.

The strike has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, with some expressing support while others argue that it is detrimental to citizens.

Nigeria is grappling with numerous economic challenges, including currency devaluation, soaring inflation, and a cost-of-living crisis. President Bola Tinubu’s administration has faced criticism for controversial spending of public funds, which has fueled public anger. Recent expenditures include a 90 billion-naira ($67 million) subsidy for Muslims attending the Hajj pilgrimage and multimillion-dollar budgets for luxury SUVs and renovations for presidential residences.

Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale acknowledged that the current wage is “unsustainably low” but warned that the unions’ proposed increase would have severe economic consequences, such as significantly higher school fees and potential mass retrenchment.

As the strike continues, the nation remains paralyzed, with its power grid shut down and air travel disrupted, while the government and unions struggle to find a resolution to the ongoing dispute over minimum wages and the cost of living.

Biden Poised to Sign Executive Order Suspending Asylum at U.S.-Mexico Border

0

President Joe Biden is preparing to sign an executive order that would effectively shut down asylum requests at the U.S.-Mexico border once the number of daily encounters between ports of entry reaches 2,500, according to several people familiar with the discussions. The border would then reopen once the daily average over the course of a week declines to 1,500.

The White House has been informing lawmakers about the details of the planned order ahead of the president’s formal announcement, which is expected to take place at an event on Tuesday where border mayors have been invited. The move marks Biden’s most aggressive unilateral action yet to control the number of migrants at the border.

President Joe Biden.

Given that the current daily figures of migrant encounters are already higher than the proposed 2,500 threshold, the executive order could result in an immediate closure of the border to asylum seekers. However, other border activities, such as trade, are expected to continue uninterrupted.

Five people familiar with the discussions confirmed the 2,500 figure, while two of them also verified the 1,500 number for reopening the border to asylum requests. All sources insisted on anonymity as the executive order has not yet been made public.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

The president’s anticipated actions have drawn significant attention, as they represent a significant shift in the administration’s approach to managing the influx of migrants at the southern border. The executive order is expected to face legal challenges and criticism from immigration advocates who argue that it undermines the right to seek asylum.

Immigrants at the US border.

The Biden administration has been grappling with a surge in migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, which has strained resources and sparked political debates over immigration policies. The president has faced pressure from both Republicans and some Democrats to take more decisive action to address the situation.

As the country awaits the official announcement of the executive order, the implications for asylum seekers and the broader immigration system remain a topic of intense discussion and speculation.

China Accuses Two Citizens of Spying for Britain Amid Strained Relations

0

In a new development that further strains the already tense relationship between China and the United Kingdom, Beijing has accused two Chinese citizens of spying for Britain’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6. The accusations come amidst ongoing clashes between the two nations over Beijing’s crackdown on free speech and open elections in Hong Kong, a former British territory.

The Ministry of State Security, China’s main intelligence service, announced the alleged espionage case on social media on Monday. The accused couple, identified only by their surnames Wang and Zhou, were reportedly recruited by MI6 while Wang was studying in Britain in 2015. According to the ministry, the couple was provided with hotel rooms, trips around the country, and financial incentives.

The ministry claims that Wang and Zhou, who worked for the Chinese government in a “central state agency,” had access to government secrets, which they allegedly passed on to MI6. However, no specific details were provided regarding the nature of the information the couple may have shared. The case is currently under investigation, and the whereabouts of the accused couple remain undisclosed.

The relationship between China and the U.K. has been increasingly strained in recent years, particularly due to disagreements over Hong Kong. The former British territory was guaranteed its own economic and political freedoms for 50 years following its handover to Chinese rule in 1997. However, Beijing’s actions in the city, including the suppression of free speech and open elections, have drawn criticism from the U.K. and other nations.

This latest espionage accusation comes just a month after Britain announced that two men would face trial for allegedly collecting sensitive information for Hong Kong authorities. A third suspect in the case, 37-year-old Briton Matthew Trickett, was found dead in a park under unexplained circumstances.

As of now, Britain has not issued an official comment on the espionage accusations made by China. The development is likely to further test the already fragile relationship between the two countries, as tensions continue to mount over issues related to Hong Kong and other matters of international concern.

California Girl, 11, Becomes Youngest Graduate at Irvine Valley College, Surpassing Brother’s Record

0

… her 13-year-old brother gets doctoral degree qualifying exams.

In a remarkable achievement, 11-year-old Athena Elling has become the youngest graduate at Irvine Valley College in California, surpassing the record previously set by her brother, Tycho Elling, who graduated from the same college at age 11 in May 2023. Athena, driven by a competitive spirit and a desire to have “bragging rights at dinner,” enrolled in courses at the community college just weeks after her brother’s graduation.

11-year-old Athena Elling.

Athena and Tycho began their educational journey by taking high school-level courses early and then adding community college classes through a dual-enrollment program. Tycho, now 13, has recently taken his final doctoral degree qualifying exams, showcasing the siblings’ exceptional academic abilities.

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, Athena walked across the stage in an oversized blue gown, graduating cum laude with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. During the commencement, college president John Hernandez acknowledged Athena’s record-breaking achievement, confirming her status as the youngest graduate in the school’s history.

The siblings’ educational path began when Tycho, at age 9, had exhausted all the high school-level math classes offered by his charter school. His teachers suggested he take math classes at Irvine Valley College, which he did while being home-schooled. Athena followed in her brother’s footsteps, enrolling in a few classes at the college in the summer of 2022 at age 9.

Despite their academic prowess, their parents, Christina Chow and her husband, emphasized that there was no pressure on the children to proceed with college classes. They encouraged Athena and Tycho to explore their interests and take their studies seriously.

Athena, a self-described extrovert, enjoyed in-person learning and quickly adapted to the college environment. Although she initially tried to keep a low profile among her older classmates, she soon found common ground through discussions about classic films in her college film class. She also gained exposure to a diverse network of people, helping her break out of her bubble.

Outside of school, Athena maintains a typical childhood, participating in various activities such as dancing, acting, music, and taekwondo. She enjoys visiting theme parks and spending time with friends her age.

The siblings’ competitive nature extends beyond academics, with Athena striving to outperform her brother in various aspects of life. She takes pride in receiving better grades and filling up her notebooks faster than Tycho.

As Tycho pursues a bachelor’s degree in math at the University of California at Irvine, Athena continues her studies at Irvine Valley College, aiming to earn associate’s degrees in psychology, theater, and music. Due to age restrictions, Athena will likely take an unconventional path, obtaining her GED years from now when she turns 18.

Athena’s ultimate goal is to be admitted to a more competitive four-year college than her brother, with her sights set on an Ivy League school. She believes that if she achieves this, she will be “indestructible.”

The Elling siblings’ remarkable achievements serve as an inspiration to students of all ages, demonstrating that with dedication, passion, and family support, one can accomplish extraordinary feats at a young age.

Nigerian Woman City of Houston Employee Killed by METRO Bus

0

A tragic accident occurred in Downtown Houston on Friday morning when a City of Houston Human Resources employee, Damilola Matuluko, was run over and killed by a METRO bus while walking to work. The incident took place just after 7:30 a.m. as Matuluko was crossing Smith Street with the pedestrian signal’s permission.

Damilola Matuluko.

According to Lt. Tim McClelland of METRO Police, video evidence suggests that Matuluko was legally crossing the street when the METRO bus, also heading south on Smith, turned left onto Rusk Street on a green light, striking and killing her. Investigators believe the bus driver should have yielded the right of way to Matuluko and waited for her to finish crossing before proceeding.

The bus driver involved in the accident is a contract employee working for Transdev Mobility, not a direct Houston METRO employee. Transdev has placed the driver on administrative leave, pending the conclusion of the investigation. As per standard procedure, the driver was immediately taken for drug and alcohol testing to check for any possible impairment.

Investigators from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office were also present at the scene to determine if the bus driver would face any charges in connection with the fatal accident.

METRO currently employs 432 contract bus drivers, with the number varying weekly. These drivers operate out of various facilities across the Houston area, with one location being operated by Transdev.

Matuluko had only recently joined the City of Houston HR Department in December 2023. In a statement, City of Houston HR Director Jane Cheeks expressed the department’s grief, saying, “Although Damilola had only been with the HR Department for a short time, she had become a beloved and impactful team member. She will be sincerely missed by her colleagues in the City of Houston.”

The tragic loss of Damilola Matuluko has left her colleagues and the City of Houston mourning, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crosswalk accident involving the METRO bus.

Two Israeli Far-Right Ministers Vows to Topple Government Over Biden’s Gaza Peace Proposal

Two prominent far-right Israeli ministers, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have threatened to resign and bring down Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition if he accepts the peace proposal for Gaza laid out by US President Joe Biden.

In a speech at the White House on Friday, Biden unveiled what he described as a three-phase Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, which would pair a release of hostages with a “full and complete ceasefire.” The US president said that Hamas had been degraded to a point where it could no longer carry out attacks like the one seen on October 7, which triggered the current war.

However, Smotrich and Ben Gvir have made it clear that they reject an immediate ceasefire. Smotrich demanded that the fighting continue until the “destruction of Hamas and the return of all the hostages,” while Ben Gvir described the deal as “reckless” and “a victory for terrorism.” Both ministers have threatened to dissolve the government if Netanyahu implements the proposed plan.

US President Joe Biden.

Netanyahu himself has signaled that he is not ready for an immediate ceasefire, insisting that Israel will not end the war until it has achieved all of its goals, including the destruction of Hamas. However, the prime minister also stated that the “exact outline” of Israel’s proposal allows the country to maintain these principles.

The peace proposal has been widely welcomed by the international community, with the UN and other powers urging Israel and Hamas to accept it. Hamas has expressed a positive view of the plan and readiness to deal with any proposal based on a permanent ceasefire.

Despite this, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has warned that Israel will not accept any deal that allows Hamas to rule over Gaza, and is considering options for a “governing alternative to Hamas.” Hamas, on the other hand, has made it clear that it will not accept any other group governing Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah.

The White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby has said that the administration is currently waiting for an official response from Hamas on the Israeli ceasefire proposal, and has “every expectation” that Israel would agree if Hamas does.

Netanyahu is also facing pressure from protesters demanding his resignation and early elections, as well as from opposition leader Yair Lapid, who has offered to back the prime minister in accepting the proposal.

As the conflict approaches its ninth month, with more than 36,000 people killed and over 200 taken hostage, Netanyahu’s government is facing growing international calls to end the war in Gaza.

Claudia Sheinbaum Makes History as Mexico’s First Woman President in Landslide Victory

0

In a historic moment for Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum has won a landslide victory to become the country’s first female president. Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, secured between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to a rapid sample count by Mexico’s electoral authority. This is set to be the highest vote percentage in Mexico’s democratic history.

Sheinbaum’s triumph is a testament to the popularity of her mentor and outgoing leader, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whose support among the poor helped drive her success. The ruling coalition is also on track for a possible two-thirds super majority in both houses of Congress, which would allow them to pass constitutional reforms without opposition support.

Opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez conceded defeat after preliminary results showed her taking between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote.

In her victory speech, Sheinbaum declared, “For the first time in the 200 years of the republic I will become the first woman president of Mexico,” to loud cheers of “president, president” from her supporters.

Sheinbaum’s victory marks a significant step forward for Mexico, a country known for its macho culture and home to the world’s second-largest Roman Catholic population, which has traditionally promoted more traditional values and roles for women.

Edelmira Montiel, an 87-year-old Sheinbaum supporter from Mexico’s smallest state, Tlaxcala, expressed her surprise and delight at the historic moment, stating, “I never imagined that one day I would vote for a woman.”

Sheinbaum’s win not only shatters the glass ceiling in Mexican politics but also positions her as the first woman to win a general election in the United States, Mexico, or Canada.

As Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum will face the challenge of building upon the legacy of her predecessor while addressing the country’s pressing issues and continuing to champion the causes that have brought her to this momentous occasion.
