Germany Targets Last-16 Qualification in Euro 2024 Showdown with Hungary

Germany, the hosts of Euro 2024, head into their second group stage match as the tournament’s most in-form team, aiming to secure a spot in the last-16 with a victory over Hungary. The Germans laid down a marker for their rivals with a resounding 5-1 win against Scotland, showcasing their ruthless attacking prowess.

Jamal Musiala was the standout performer for Germany in their opening match, while Arsenal’s Kai Havertz also contributed with a goal and an assist. The hosts boast a fearsome mix of experience and young talent, with the likes of Antonio Rudiger anchoring the defense and Ilkay Gundogan dictating play in midfield.

Hungary, on the other hand, faces an uphill battle after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in their first match. Despite their impressive form leading up to the tournament, losing just once in two years, the Hungarians will need to pull off a remarkable upset to overcome the in-form Germans.

Germany’s squad emerged unscathed from their opening-day drubbing, but Robert Andrich and Jonathan Tah were both booked and could be rested to avoid any suspensions. Hungary, meanwhile, are expected to be without Loic Nego and Callum Styles, while Germany’s Serge Gnabry misses the tournament through injury.

Germany are favorites to win Hungary.

All eyes will be on Musiala to continue his dazzling form, while Hungary’s hulking striker Martin Adam, who has 13 goals in South Korea’s top flight, will look to make an impact.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann warned that Hungary could be an “unpleasant opponent” and “difficult to get a hold of,” while Hungary’s Marco Rossi acknowledged Germany as the biggest favorite of the European Championship.

The clash between Germany and Hungary takes place on Wednesday, June 19, at the Stuttgart Arena in Stuttgart, Germany, with kick-off scheduled for 5 p.m. BST. As the hosts aim to secure their place in the last-16 and continue their impressive form, Hungary will need to produce a spirited performance to keep their own hopes alive in the tournament.

Israeli Military Escalates Offensive in Rafah, Prompting Civilian Displacement and Humanitarian Concerns

The recent advancement of Israeli tanks, warplanes, and drones deeper into the western part of Gaza’s Rafah city has intensified the conflict, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives and forcing many families to flee in fear.

The escalation of violence, marked by heavy shelling and gunfire targeting displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area, has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Israeli soldiers are seen advancing.

Despite international efforts to broker a ceasefire, the relentless fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas shows no signs of abating.

The Israeli military’s strategic incursion into Rafah, with a focus on Hamas strongholds, has led to widespread destruction and civilian displacement, raising alarms about the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law.

The ongoing clashes have left residents in Rafah traumatized, with homes destroyed and lives lost in the crossfire. The indiscriminate nature of the attacks, including bombings and ground offensives, has sparked outrage and condemnation from humanitarian organizations and the international community.

As the conflict rages on, the plight of civilians in Gaza remains a pressing concern, with fears of further escalation and humanitarian catastrophe looming large. Efforts to de-escalate the situation and reach a sustainable ceasefire are imperative to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crosshairs of conflict.

Russia and North Korea Forge Strongest Partnership Since Cold War Era

In a landmark summit on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a new partnership deal that includes a mutual aid pact in the event of an attack on either country. The agreement, which covers areas such as security, trade, investment, and cultural and humanitarian ties, represents the strongest connection between Moscow and Pyongyang since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a new partnership deal.

The meeting, which took place during Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years, comes amid escalating tensions between both countries and the West. The U.S. and its allies have expressed growing concerns over an arms arrangement in which North Korea provides Russia with badly needed munitions for its war in Ukraine in exchange for economic assistance and technology transfers that could enhance the threat posed by Kim’s nuclear weapons and missile program.

Kim Jong Un greeted Putin with a lavish welcome, meeting him at the airport Tuesday night and riding together in a limousine through the capital’s brightly illuminated streets. The following day, Putin attended a welcoming ceremony at the city’s main square, filled with tens of thousands of spectators, before the two leaders began their talks.

During the discussions, Putin thanked Kim for North Korea’s support in his war against Ukraine, which he described as a fight against the “imperialist hegemonistic policies” of the U.S. and its allies. In turn, Kim pledged “full support and solidarity” for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, calling the two countries’ friendship “fiery” and even closer than during Soviet times.

The exact nature of North Korea’s support for Russia remains unclear, but U.S. and South Korean officials accuse Pyongyang of providing Moscow with artillery, missiles, and other military equipment for use in Ukraine. Both countries deny these accusations, which would violate multiple U.N. Security Council sanctions that Russia previously endorsed.

Russia, along with China, has provided political cover for Kim’s continuing efforts to advance his nuclear arsenal, repeatedly blocking U.S.-led efforts to impose fresh U.N. sanctions on the North over its weapons tests.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Putin’s visit to North Korea, stating that it illustrates Russia’s desperation to develop and strengthen relations with countries that can provide it with what it needs to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine.

As tensions on the Korean Peninsula reach their highest point in years, the landmark partnership between Russia and North Korea is set to have significant implications for regional security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Argentina Copa America 2024 squad guide: Fixtures, predictions and best players

Argentina enters Copa America 2024 as the clear favorite to win the tournament, and if successful, they will hold the record for the most Copa America titles in history. Lionel Scaloni’s final 26-man squad is a balanced blend of young talent and experienced stars, with no major surprises. Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho represent the youth, while Lionel Messi leads the veteran contingent. The return of Lisandro Martinez from injury bolsters Argentina’s defensive options.

Willie Mays, Baseball’s ‘Say Hey Kid’ and All-Time Great, Passes Away at 93

0

Willie Mays, the Hall of Fame centerfielder whose all-around skills and exuberant playing style made him one of the greatest baseball players of all time, died on Tuesday at the age of 93. Major League Baseball announced his passing, with the San Francisco Chronicle reporting that Mays died of heart failure.

Mays, known as “The Say Hey Kid” for his standard greeting, played 23 seasons for the New York Giants, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets, from 1951 through 1973. He was the epitome of a “five-tool player,” excelling at hitting for average, hitting for power, fielding, throwing, and baserunning.

Beyond his talent, Mays played with a verve and passion that endeared him to fans. He was known for playing stickball with kids on the streets of Harlem and for running with such speed and fury that his hat would fly off as he stole bases or chased down flyballs. His snag of a deep fly ball in the 1954 World Series, known simply as “The Catch,” remains one of baseball’s most iconic moments.

Mays, born in Westfield, Alabama, during the segregation era, was inspired to play ball by his father and uncle. He joined the New York Giants in 1951, four years after Jackie Robinson had integrated Major League Baseball, and went on to win Rookie of the Year honors. He missed most of the 1952 season and all of 1953 while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Upon his return in 1954, Mays won the first of his two Most Valuable Player awards and led the Giants to a World Series sweep of the Cleveland Indians. When the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958, Mays faced some challenges in winning over the local fans but continued to showcase his extraordinary skills.

Mays retired in 1973 after a final season with the New York Mets. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility, and was named to the all-star team a record 24 times, a feat shared only with Hank Aaron and Stan Musial. When he retired, Mays held third place on the all-time home run list with 660 and was the first player to hit 300 homers and steal 300 bases.

Baseball writer and historian Charles Einstein captured Mays’ essence in his book “Willie’s Time,” quoting the legend as saying, “I thought I was [the greatest player ever]. I hope I didn’t say that wrong.”

Willie Mays’ legacy as one of baseball’s all-time greats is secure, and his passing marks the end of an era for the sport he loved and played with such joy and brilliance.

Brooklyn Preacher with Ties to NYC Mayor Sentenced to 9 Years for Fraud

0

Lamor Miller-Whitehead, a 45-year-old flashy Brooklyn preacher known for his connections to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for multiple frauds. The sentencing took place Monday in Manhattan federal court, with Judge Lorna G. Schofield presiding.

During the trial, Miller-Whitehead was convicted of fleecing one parishioner out of $90,000 in retirement savings, among other scams. Despite claiming to be “very remorseful” in a rambling statement, the Rolls Royce-driving bishop was found to lack meaningful remorse by the judge.

Judge Schofield interrupted Miller-Whitehead’s statement, reminding him that sentencing is not a time to relitigate the case. She emphasized that a significant prison sentence was necessary due to the high probability of Miller-Whitehead committing future crimes, given his previous convictions for similar offenses.

Miller-Whitehead, who formed the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in 2013, was known for his designer clothing and was once the victim of a robbery in which $1 million in jewelry was stolen from him during a church service. He owned a $1.6 million home in Paramus, New Jersey, and an apartment in Hartford, Connecticut.

Prosecutors contended that Miller-Whitehead used his friendship with Mayor Eric Adams, developed while Adams served as Brooklyn’s borough president, to commit fraud and attempted extortion. Adams was not accused of any wrongdoing in the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wikstrom requested a sentence of over 12 years in prison, stating that Miller-Whitehead had defrauded large financial institutions and a parishioner who lost her life savings. Wikstrom accused Miller-Whitehead of lying and stealing repeatedly, asserting that he possesses a “psychological and delusional failure” to accept his crimes and the need for punishment.

In addition to the nine-year prison term, Miller-Whitehead was ordered to pay $85,000 in restitution and to forfeit $95,000. His lawyer, Dawn Florio, had urged for no prison time, citing her client’s charitable works. However, the judge stated that Miller-Whitehead’s prison sentence would have been longer if not for his good works in the community.

U.S. Investigation Uncovers Sinaloa Cartel’s Partnership with Chinese Money Launderers

0

In a significant breakthrough, a five-year investigation by U.S. officials has exposed an intricate partnership between Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa Cartel and Chinese underground banking groups in the United States. Federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday that the scheme involved laundering more than $50 million in profits from the sale of fentanyl, cocaine, and other drugs, with much of the money being processed in the Los Angeles area.

The investigation, which led to charges against 24 individuals, relied on assistance from Chinese and Mexican law enforcement to arrest fugitives who had fled the United States after initial charges were filed last year. Drug Enforcement Administration official Anne Milgram emphasized the significance of the case, stating, “This investigation shows that the Sinaloa Cartel has entered into a new criminal partnership with Chinese nationals who launder money for the cartels.”

Part of large sum of money seized from the underworld men.

The lead defendant, Edgar Joel Martinez-Reyes, 45, of East Los Angeles, is accused of managing couriers who collected drug cash in the Los Angeles area and partnering with the leader of the Chinese money launderers. Prosecutors alleged that Martinez-Reyes traveled with the Chinese leader to Mexico to negotiate contracts with the cartel.

The scheme exploited the high demand for U.S. currency among wealthy Chinese nationals, who face government restrictions on transferring more than $50,000 per year out of China. According to authorities, individuals in China would move money into a seller’s Chinese bank account and receive the dollar equivalent in the U.S. for various purposes, such as purchasing real estate, luxury items, and paying tuition. Cryptocurrency transactions were also utilized to move the drug money.

United States Attorney Martin Estrada addressing news conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday June 18 2024.

Prosecutors highlighted that the Chinese money brokers charged lower commission fees compared to traditional money launderers, providing more cost-effective methods than previous practices like smuggling cash across the U.S.-Mexico border or using banks and businesses.

The funds in China were allegedly used to purchase chemicals for manufacturing fentanyl and methamphetamine, which were then sent to the drug cartels in Mexico. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada described the situation as a “cycle of destruction,” with drugs sold in the United States funding precursor chemicals for even more drug production.

Federal law enforcement has collaborated closely with China’s Ministry of Public Security since the meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November 2022. At least 22 of the 24 defendants have been arrested, facing charges of conspiracy to aid and abet drug distribution, money laundering, and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business.

Law enforcement also seized approximately $5 million in drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as several firearms during the investigation. The case highlights the evolving nature of international drug trafficking and the importance of cross-border cooperation in combating organized crime.
