In a forceful op-ed published in The New York Times on Monday, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for the implementation of tobacco-style warning labels on all social media platforms to address the mental health crisis among young people. Murthy emphasized that the well-being of children is at stake, as studies have shown a correlation between increased time spent on social media and a greater risk of mental health harm in adolescents.
Citing the current mental health crisis as an “emergency,” Murthy proposed that a surgeon general’s warning label, which would require congressional action, be added to social media platforms. The label would serve as a regular reminder to parents and adolescents that social media has not been proven safe, similar to the warnings found on tobacco products.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy .
Murthy pointed to evidence from tobacco studies that demonstrates the effectiveness of warning labels in increasing awareness and changing behavior. By implementing a surgeon general’s warning on social media platforms, he believes that parents would be more likely to limit or restrict their children’s social media use, potentially reducing the number of young people experiencing depression, anxiety, or negative self-image.
Recent studies have highlighted the dangers of excessive social media use among adolescents. One study found that those between the ages of 12 and 15 who used social media for more than three hours a day were twice as likely to experience negative mental health outcomes compared to those who did not. Another study revealed that nearly half of young people reported feeling worse about their bodies after using social media.
Despite the public’s awareness of the dangers associated with social media, such as online bullying and child exploitation, Murthy argues that it remains too easily accessible. He questions why society has failed to respond to the harms of social media with the same urgency as it has with unsafe cars, planes, or food, emphasizing that these harms are not a result of poor parenting or a lack of willpower but rather the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency, or accountability.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy calls for tobacco-style warning on social media platforms.
While some popular social media platforms have implemented tools to help parents and teens limit screen time, Murthy notes that tech-savvy young people can easily circumvent these measures. He acknowledges that members of Congress have held multiple hearings to understand the impact of social media on young people and to consider potential legislation to address the problem.
However, Murthy sees the surgeon general’s warning as a crucial first step in encouraging parents to think more critically about their adolescents’ social media habits and the permissions they grant. By raising awareness and prompting action, he hopes to combat the growing mental health crisis among young people and protect their well-being in an increasingly digital world.
As the debate surrounding social media’s impact on youth mental health continues, the surgeon general’s call for warning labels serves as a powerful reminder that urgent action is needed to safeguard the next generation from the potential harms of these platforms.
Tournament favorites France began their Euro 2024 journey with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Austria, but the victory came at a significant cost as superstar Kylian Mbappe suffered a suspected broken nose in a horrific on-field collision.
Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid, was instrumental in France’s lone goal, as his cross was deflected into the net for an own goal by an Austrian defender. However, the 24-year-old forward was forced to leave the pitch late in the match after a brutal collision left him with a bloodied face and a suspected broken nose.
France manager Didier Deschamps confirmed the extent of Mbappe’s injury in a post-match press conference, stating, “Yes, Kylian Mbappé has probably broken his nose. Apparently the nose is not good at all. So, we’ll see. It’s obviously the bad point of the evening. Even if it’s just his nose it’s annoying for us.”
Despite the concern surrounding Mbappe’s injury, the night also marked a significant milestone for Deschamps, who celebrated his 100th win as France’s manager. If he can lead the team to a handful more victories in the tournament, it could result in another successful campaign for the reigning World Cup champions.
While Mbappe’s injury dominated the post-match discussion, pundits were quick to praise the performance of midfielder N’Golo Kante, who was named man of the match. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville declared Kante the best player on the pitch, a sentiment echoed by the match observer.
Fellow ITV pundit Roy Keane added, “He was brilliant. He’s got that vast experience. We talk about him breaking the play up but it’s the other side of his game too. His passing was sharp. We know he covers the ground well but his decision-making was excellent and he was neat. He makes runs forward. He looked a younger version of himself, he was excellent.”
As France looks ahead to their next match, the focus will undoubtedly be on Mbappe’s recovery and his availability for the remainder of the tournament. The injury to their star player will be a cause for concern, but the team’s depth and quality were on display against Austria, suggesting they have the resilience to overcome this setback.
With Kante’s outstanding performance and the team’s collective ability to grind out a victory, France will be confident in their chances of making a deep run in Euro 2024. However, the full extent of Mbappe’s injury and his potential absence from the lineup could have a significant impact on their title aspirations.
Robert Morris, a senior pastor at Gateway Church and a former member of then-candidate Donald Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board during the 2016 campaign, has admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” in the 1980s. The admission comes after a woman, Cindy Clemishire, accused Morris of molesting her when she was 12 years old, according to a statement obtained by CNN affiliate WFAA.
Robert Morris, a senior pastor at Gateway Church and a former member of then-candidate Donald Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board.
Clemishire told WFAA that the abuse began on Christmas Day in 1982 and continued until 1987 when she informed her parents. Her account was first reported by The Wartburg Watch, a church watchdog blog, on Friday.
In his statement, Morris did not mention the name or age of the girl but acknowledged that the inappropriate behavior lasted several years. “When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying. It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years,” the pastor stated.
Cindy Clemishire.
The incident came to light in 1987 while Morris was a pastor at Shady Grove Church in Grand Prairie, which has since become one of Gateway Church’s 11 locations. Morris claimed that he submitted himself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father, who asked him to step out of ministry and receive counseling and freedom ministry, which he did.
Morris also stated that he and his wife met with the survivor and her family in 1989, asking for their forgiveness, which they graciously granted. However, Clemishire told WFAA that although her family forgave him, they never supported Morris returning to the ministry.
Trump and Morris.
In a statement to WFAA, Gateway Church confirmed that Morris underwent a two-year “restoration process” after a “moral failure” in his twenties. The church stated that the restoration process was closely administered by the Elders at Shady Grove Church and included Morris stepping out of the ministry during that period while receiving professional counseling and freedom ministry counseling.
The church also claimed that since the resolution of the 35-year-old matter, there have been no other moral failures on Morris’ part.
Morris and Cindy Clemishire.
In 2016, Morris was part of Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, and Trump also held a roundtable at Gateway’s Dallas campus in 2020, with Morris leading a prayer before the event. It is unclear if Morris is contributing to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
According to the church’s website, Morris’ son, James Morris, will take over senior pastor duties in 2025, with the elder Morris remaining a primary speaker on weekends.
The accusation and admission have raised questions about the handling of such incidents within religious institutions and the responsibility of leaders to protect vulnerable individuals within their communities.
In a stunning display of skill and determination, Romania has secured a historic 3-0 victory over Ukraine in their opening match of Euro 2024. This triumph marks Romania’s first win in the European Championship in 24 years and serves as a statement of intent for the team that had been considered makeweights coming into the tournament.
From the outset, Romania showed their attacking prowess, with Nicolae Stanciu firing them ahead early in the match. The goal set the tone for what would be a dominant performance from the Romanians, who continued to press forward and create chances throughout the game.
The second goal came from the boot of Razvan Marin, who unleashed a magnificent strike that left the Ukrainian goalkeeper with no chance. Marin’s goal not only doubled Romania’s lead but also showcased the team’s confidence and technical ability on the big stage.
As Ukraine struggled to find a foothold in the match, Romania continued to push for more goals. Their efforts were rewarded when Denis Dragus timed his back-post run to perfection, meeting a well-placed cross and putting the final nail in Ukraine’s coffin.
The 3-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of Romania’s dominance throughout the match. Despite the presence of star player Oleksandr Zinchenko in the Ukrainian lineup, Romania’s organized defense and relentless attacking play proved too much for their opponents to handle.
As the final whistle blew in Munich, the Romanian squad rushed together to celebrate their biggest ever win in European Championship football. The result not only silenced their critics but also sent a message to the rest of the tournament that Romania is a force to be reckoned with.
For a team that had been labeled as goal-shy and unlikely to make an impact, Romania’s performance was nothing short of thrilling. Their determination, organization, and clinical finishing were a joy to watch and will undoubtedly give them a huge boost of confidence as they look to progress further in the tournament.
On the other hand, Ukraine will be left to lick their wounds and regroup after a disappointing start to their Euro 2024 campaign. The team will need to quickly analyze what went wrong and make the necessary adjustments if they hope to bounce back in their remaining group stage matches.
As the dust settles on this historic encounter, football fans around the world will be eager to see what Romania can achieve in the rest of the tournament. If they can maintain the level of performance they showed against Ukraine, there is no telling how far they could go in Euro 2024.
Donald Trump recently stirred controversy at a Michigan event by once again touting his performance on a cognitive test he took six years ago. However, the former president’s boast took an unexpected turn when he mistakenly referred to his former physician as “Ronny Johnson” instead of Ronny Jackson, his close political ally and former White House doctor.
During his speech, Trump proudly declared, “I took a cognitive test, and I aced it. Doc Ronny Johnson… congressman from Texas? He was the White House doctor, and he said I was the healthiest president, he feels, in history, so I liked him very much indeed immediately.”

The incident highlights Trump’s ongoing fixation on the cognitive exam he underwent as part of his annual physical in early 2018. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a standard test for identifying signs of dementia and cognitive decline, was administered to Trump by his then-physician. Despite the test primarily being designed to detect cognitive impairments, Trump has repeatedly characterized his perfect score as evidence of his mental sharpness.
Critics argue that Trump’s interpretation of the test results is misleading. The MoCA includes tasks like drawing a clock or naming words that start with a specific letter within a time limit, which are intended to assess basic cognitive functions rather than intellectual prowess akin to a Mensa exam.
Trump and Republican party stalwarts.
Despite ongoing skepticism and critique, Trump continues to defend his cognitive abilities vehemently, often contrasting his supposed mental acuity with his political opponents. His latest gaffe of misnaming Ronny Jackson underscores ongoing concerns about his understanding of critical issues and attention to detail, especially concerning matters of health and public perception.
The incident at the Michigan event further fuels the debate surrounding Trump’s mental fitness, which has been a subject of scrutiny since his presidency began. Questions about his cognitive state resurfaced after controversial public statements and behaviors during his tenure, prompting journalists and commentators to openly question his mental stability.
In conclusion, Trump’s insistence on revisiting his cognitive test results not only underscores his personal narrative but also invites continued scrutiny into his fitness to lead, leaving observers to ponder the implications of his words and actions on the political landscape.

A 19-year-old teenager from Tampa, Florida, murdered his parents execution-style and shot a sheriff’s deputy during a tense standoff with police on Saturday night. The violent incident, which unfolded inside the family’s home, was captured on dramatic body cam footage released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
According to authorities, Christos Themelis Jr., 19, obtained a firearm and fatally shot his father, Christos Themelis, 51, inside their Tampa residence. The teen’s mother, Rebecca Themelis, 48, managed to place a frantic 911 call, informing dispatchers that her son had shot her husband. Gunfire could be heard in the background during the distressing call.
As sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Rebecca Themelis in the front yard with her son, who was armed with the gun. The police body cam footage revealed the intense standoff between the deputies and Christos Jr. as he held his mother hostage. In the video, one of the deputies can be heard yelling at the teen, “Stop reaching for your waistband!”
Tragically, Christos Jr. pulled out the firearm and shot his mother in the back of the head, killing her instantly. He then turned the gun on the police, striking Deputy Shane McGough in the leg. The body cam footage captured the moment Deputy McGough announced that he had been “hit” and showed his partner dragging him to safety.
Several other deputies engaged in a shootout with Christos Jr., ultimately resulting in the teenager’s death.
Deputy McGough was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery for his leg injury. Police reported that McGough was recovering and in good spirits following the operation.
As of Monday morning, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was still working to determine the motive behind this horrific incident.
The devastating event has left the Tampa community in shock and mourning. The loss of Christos and Rebecca Themelis has undoubtedly had a profound impact on their loved ones and the neighborhood they called home.
The bravery and quick actions of the sheriff’s deputies in responding to the dangerous situation and ensuring the safety of the public cannot be overstated. The body cam footage serves as a chilling reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face on a daily basis as they work to protect and serve their communities.
As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Tampa community will work together to heal and seek answers in the face of this senseless act of violence.

In a significant development in the UK general election, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has launched the party’s manifesto, titled “Our Contract With You,” which he describes as a “serious plan to reshape the way our country is run.” The manifesto unveiled in a run-down community center in Gurnos, South Wales, aims to highlight “exactly what happens to a country when Labour is in charge.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
Farage, in the foreword of the manifesto, criticizes both the Conservatives and Labour, stating, “The Tories have broken Britain. Labor will bankrupt Britain. A vote for either is a vote for more dishonesty and defeat.” He emphasizes the party’s commitment to taking back control over borders, money, and laws.
Notably, Farage has declared his ambition to become the UK’s prime minister by 2029. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he expressed his belief that there is a significant disconnect between the Westminster-based parties and the thoughts, hopes, and aspirations of ordinary people. Farage vowed that Reform UK would offer a “proper voice of opposition” in the event of their success in the upcoming election.
Farage.
A recent poll conducted by the Sunday Times projected that Farage would narrowly win the Clacton constituency with 31% of the vote, surpassing the defending Conservative candidate, Giles Watling. The survey, which included 22,000 participants, also forecasted Reform UK winning seven seats in total.
The prospect of Farage’s return to the Conservative Party has been met with mixed reactions. While Home Secretary Suella Braverman expressed her willingness to invite Farage back into the party, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron disagreed, describing Farage as “incredibly divisive” and accusing him of trying to “destroy” the Conservative Party.
In a related development, Tory candidate for South Devon, Anthony Mangnall, has expressed frustration with the Conservative general election campaign. Mangnall, who was first elected as MP for Totnes in 2019, described the campaign as “enormously frustrating” and “plagued by unforced errors” during an appearance on The Sun’s “Never Mind the Ballots” program.
Tory candidate for South Devon, Anthony Mangnal.
Mangnall also addressed the possibility of serving alongside Nigel Farage in the Conservative Party if the Reform UK leader is welcomed back after the election. He acknowledged that a split right is not beneficial and emphasized the importance of having a united right. Mangnall pointed out that the combined polling of Reform UK and the Conservative Party is somewhere in the 30% bracket, which he believes “makes for interesting reading.”
As the UK general election campaign continues, the launch of Reform UK’s manifesto and Nigel Farage’s aspirations to become prime minister by 2029 have added a new dimension to the political landscape. The frustration expressed by Tory candidate Anthony Mangnall highlights the internal challenges faced by the Conservative Party in the lead-up to the election. The outcome of the election and the potential impact of Reform UK’s performance on the Conservative Party’s future remain to be seen.
In the latest development in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, a massive explosion was reported overnight in the Rostov-on-Don region of southern Russia. Although the reports have not been verified by Sky News, eyewitnesses claim to have seen a large flash before losing power in their apartments. Video footage of the alleged blast has been circulating on social media platforms.
Initial reports suggest that the explosion occurred at an electricity substation, causing widespread power outages in the area. Statements attributed to the Rostov mayor’s office indicate that the explosion and subsequent power outage originated from the water treatment facilities of JSC Rostovvodokanal, a company responsible for designing water supply and drainage systems in the region. The statement further explains that a malfunction in the pumping equipment led to the incident, which also left residents without a steady water supply for several hours.
Russian President Putin.
As the situation in Russia unfolds, the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence claims that over the last 24 hours, 1,080 Russian soldiers and officers were killed or wounded in action, bringing Russia’s total combat manpower losses since the start of the invasion to approximately 527,390. The Ukrainian military also asserts that they have destroyed two Russian tanks, 18 armoured fighting vehicles, 14 artillery systems, and eight UAVs during the last day of fighting. However, these reports have yet to be independently verified.
In a related development, Vietnam has come under criticism for hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The visit has drawn international attention and raised questions about Vietnam’s stance on the war and its relationship with Russia. Critics argue that by welcoming Putin, Vietnam is implicitly condoning Russia’s actions in Ukraine and undermining international efforts to pressure Moscow to end the conflict.
As the war in Ukraine continues to rage on, the international community remains deeply concerned about the escalating violence and the impact on civilians caught in the crossfire. The reported explosion in Rostov-on-Don and the alleged heavy losses suffered by Russian forces underscore the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The situation in Ukraine remains fluid, with both sides making claims and counterclaims about the progress of the war. As the international community watches closely, pressure mounts on Russia to end its military campaign and engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. The criticism faced by Vietnam for hosting Putin also highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, as nations navigate their relationships with Russia and the West in the context of the ongoing crisis.
