Tanzania’s main opposition party says 51 of its officials have been charged with terrorism following their arrests over planned anti government demonstrations earlier this month, intensifying concerns over the country’s political climate ahead of renewed opposition activity.
Chadema leaders accused the government of using terrorism laws to silence political opponents, while authorities have yet to comment on the latest charges.

Chadema Deputy Chairperson John Heche said the 51 party officials were formally charged on Friday after being detained in connection with planned protests on July 7.
The demonstrations never took place because of a heavy police deployment across major cities, Heche said.
The officials charged include 23 from the Victoria Zone, 17 from the Serengeti Zone and 11 from the Nyasa Zone, according to Chadema.
Earlier this month, Tanzanian police announced the arrest of about 130 people during operations targeting individuals suspected of organizing activities linked to the planned July 7 demonstrations.
Police did not publicly identify those arrested but said they were suspected of coordinating unlawful activities.
The planned protests coincided with Saba Saba, a date marking the founding of Tanzania’s ruling party and one that has increasingly become associated with calls for democratic reforms in East Africa.
Organizers said the demonstrations were intended to demand electoral reforms and accountability following Tanzania’s disputed October general election.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of that election with 98 percent of the vote.

Heche said Chadema Chairman Tundu Lissu, who is already facing terrorism charges, continues to be denied basic legal rights.
Under Tanzanian law, terrorism offenses are generally not eligible for bail and carry prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment upon conviction.
Heche urged Tanzanians to oppose what he described as political intimidation.
“I urge all Tanzanians to unite and speak out against blackmail and intimidation,” he said.
He also said Chadema’s legal team would represent all officials facing prosecution and encouraged supporters to assist their families during the legal process.
The Tanzanian government has not publicly responded to the latest charges.
Officials have previously rejected accusations of political repression and have defended security measures as necessary to maintain public order.
In June, authorities prohibited political rallies nationwide, citing security concerns, though they did not specify when the restrictions would end.
