Trump Administration Strips Security Clearances From 37 Current and Former Officials

0

WASHINGTON (BN24) — The Trump administration on Tuesday revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former government officials, intensifying its campaign against intelligence community figures it has long viewed with suspicion.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard,

The decision, announced in a memo from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, accused the targeted officials of “politicizing or weaponizing intelligence,” mishandling classified information, and failing to uphold professional standards. The memo offered no evidence to substantiate the allegations.

The move affects individuals who once held senior national security positions as well as lower-profile roles, including several who were involved in the intelligence community’s 2017 assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to benefit Donald Trump. Others had signed a 2019 letter critical of Trump, which resurfaced on social media last month.

Critics blasted the action as a dangerous escalation. National security lawyer Mark Zaid, whose clearance was also revoked, called it “unlawful and unconstitutional,” arguing that decades-old policies exist to prevent such politically motivated reprisals.

The sweeping measure reflects Trump’s distrust of career intelligence officials, a tension dating back to his earliest days in office. Stripping clearances has become a favored tactic of his administration, raising fears that dissenting voices could be silenced within an intelligence community traditionally valued for diverse viewpoints.

Gabbard defended the decision, writing on X that holding a clearance is “a privilege, not a right,” and that those who “betray their oath to the Constitution” cannot be trusted with access to sensitive information. She said the directive came directly from Trump.

The action also coincides with renewed efforts by Trump administration officials to revisit and discredit the 2017 intelligence findings on Russian election interference. Despite multiple investigations confirming Moscow’s involvement—including hacking Democratic emails and deploying an online disinformation campaign—Trump has consistently rejected the conclusion that Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to aid him.

The revocations add to a long list of clearance disputes under Trump. On his first day in office, he vowed to strip dozens of former officials who had signed a 2020 letter describing the Hunter Biden laptop saga as resembling a Russian information operation. Trump has also revoked the clearances of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and attempted to target attorneys at major law firms, though courts blocked the latter effort.

For current and former officials alike, the loss of clearance could have significant professional consequences, particularly for those employed in the private sector who require access to classified material. Several of the officials affected by the latest order only learned of the revocation through news reports and are now weighing legal options.

Six Schoolgirls Between 12 And 13 Arrested After Injuring A 13-Year-Old In ‘Deeply Troubling Attack’

HOVE, England (BN24) — Six schoolgirls between the ages of 12 and 13 have been arrested after a 13-year-old girl was injured in a group assault described by police as “deeply troubling.”

The incident took place shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, August 15, in Wish Park, according to Sussex Police. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged.

Three girls — a 12-year-old and two 13-year-olds from Brighton — were initially detained on suspicion of assault. Police later confirmed that three more suspects, another 12-year-old and two 13-year-olds, had also been arrested in connection with the attack.

Chief Inspector Simon Marchant of the Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Team said the assault has raised significant concern within the community. “Our officers have now arrested all of the young people we wanted to speak with in connection with the report, and wider enquiries remain underway,” he said.

Authorities are also investigating reports of video footage of the incident circulating online. Marchant urged the public not to share the material or speculate about the case, warning that doing so could interfere with ongoing legal proceedings.

“This case is being fully and robustly investigated, and if you have information to report, we ask you to come forward and speak with police,” Marchant added.

Mohamed Salah Crowned PFA Player of the Year as Nottingham Forest Outshine Manchester Giants

MANCHESTER, England (BN24) — Mohamed Salah added another milestone to his glittering career on Tuesday night, claiming the PFA Player of the Year award for a record third time as Liverpool and Nottingham Forest stole the spotlight at the annual ceremony — leaving both Manchester United and Manchester City without representation.

The awards, staged at Manchester Opera House for the third consecutive year, delivered another painful reminder of the decline of United and City’s grip on English football. For the third straight year, no Manchester United player featured in the men’s Premier League Team of the Year. The last Red Devil to earn recognition was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022, a stark symbol of United’s ongoing struggles at Old Trafford.

Manchester City, who have long dominated under Pep Guardiola, also saw none of their stars included, underscoring what was a comparatively disappointing season by their high standards. Despite losing to Arsenal on opening day, City may yet bounce back this campaign, but the awards made clear their absence from the elite last season.

Liverpool, however, celebrated a night of triumph. Salah, 33, was recognized after a prolific season in which he scored 29 league goals and provided a career-best 18 assists, leading the Reds to their second Premier League title and securing his fourth Golden Boot. He was joined in the PFA Team of the Year by captain Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister, solidifying Liverpool’s dominance under new manager Arne Slot.

Nottingham Forest also enjoyed a breakthrough, with goalkeeper Matz Sels and striker Chris Wood making the Team of the Year — a remarkable achievement that highlighted their resurgence in the top flight. Arsenal, runners-up once again, saw William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Declan Rice named to the XI, though none of their forwards were included. Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak also earned a place after a standout campaign.

Among the other honorees, Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, now at Liverpool, rounded out the Team of the Year. In the women’s category, Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey was named overall PFA Women’s Player of the Year.

The night also celebrated rising stars and seasoned professionals across divisions. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers was named Young Player of the Year, while Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, who recorded an astonishing 29 clean sheets in 45 games while conceding just 16 goals, won the Championship Player of the Year before his return to Manchester City.

Special merit awards went to England manager Gareth Southgate and departing Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the sport.

The PFA, under chief executive Maheta Molango, has revamped the awards format in recent years, replacing the former London-based dinner with a concise 90-minute theatre show. With voting now extended until June 8 to better reflect the full season, the ceremony continues to evolve while honoring the game’s brightest stars.

Peruvian Woman Caught Smuggling Cocaine and Ecstasy in Sex Toy

DENPASAR, Indonesia (BN24) — A Peruvian woman has been accused of trying to smuggle more than $70,000 worth of cocaine and ecstasy into Bali by hiding the drugs in her underwear and a sex toy, Indonesian authorities said.

The woman, identified only as N.S., 42, was stopped by customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on August 12 after officials noticed her acting suspiciously, police said.

Authorities discovered six packages of narcotics wrapped in black duct tape inside a green bra, three similar packages hidden in her underwear, and additional drugs concealed in a sex toy inserted into her body, according to Radiant, the head of Bali police’s narcotics unit.

In total, police said they recovered 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds) of cocaine and 43 ecstasy pills.

The woman told investigators she was recruited through a contact on the dark web in April and paid $19,000 to smuggle the drugs from Barcelona, Spain, to Bali, with a stopover in Doha. She was arrested shortly after customs officers alerted police.

She has been charged under Indonesia’s strict narcotics laws and faces the death penalty if convicted. While Indonesia has not carried out executions since 2017, it has previously sentenced foreigners to death for drug trafficking.

The case follows several recent high-profile arrests of foreigners attempting to smuggle drugs into Indonesia. Just last month, three British nationals were convicted of trying to bring in cocaine disguised as powdered dessert mix but avoided execution.

Brand New Vet Clinic Explodes after Car Hits Gas Line

WILMINGTON, N.C. (BN24) — A veterinary hospital still under construction in Wilmington was destroyed Tuesday morning after a car struck a gas line, triggering a massive explosion that injured three firefighters, police said.

Authorities said the crash occurred about 20 minutes before the blast when a vehicle ran off the road and hit the gas meter feeding the new Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center. Wilmington Police Department spokesperson Greg Willett said the driver fled the scene before officers arrived.

As firefighters evacuated the building and searched to ensure no one was inside, the structure suddenly exploded, Wilmington Fire Department spokesperson Rebekah Thurston said. Three firefighters were injured in the blast — two suffered non-life-threatening injuries while another sustained severe burns to his hands and arms. All were taken to the hospital.

No construction workers, veterinary staff, or animals were harmed, the hospital said in a statement on Facebook.

Police later located the vehicle and took the driver into custody. The suspect, who showed signs of impairment, is being evaluated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Willett said.

Officials said surrounding streets remain closed while investigators determine the full extent of the damage and what caused the ignition.

The Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral hospital, which was scheduled to open in September, had planned to provide 24-hour emergency care for pets. The explosion has now left the future of the new facility in question.

13 Muslim Worshippers Killed in Mosque Attack in Northwestern Nigeria

KATSINA, Nigeria (BN24) — Armed men stormed a mosque in northwestern Nigeria early Tuesday, killing at least 13 people as worshippers gathered for morning prayers, authorities said.

The attack took place in the town of Unguwan Mantau in Katsina state, an area plagued by repeated assaults from armed groups operating in Nigeria’s northwest and north-central regions. No group has claimed responsibility, but officials said the assault bore the hallmarks of the bandit militias who have carried out similar attacks on farming communities in recent years.

Nasir Mu’azu, Katsina’s state commissioner, said security forces have been deployed to the area to prevent further bloodshed. He noted that armed groups often use farmlands and dense crops as cover during the rainy season to ambush rural communities.

Authorities believe Tuesday’s mosque massacre may have been an act of reprisal. Over the weekend, residents of Unguwan Mantau staged an ambush that left several gunmen dead, Mu’azu said. “This attack appears to be retaliation,” he told local media.

The violence highlights the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s rural belt, where deadly clashes between herders and farmers have intensified. Farmers accuse Fulani herders of destroying crops by grazing cattle on their land, while herders insist they are following traditional grazing routes established decades ago.

Beyond the communal conflict, Nigeria continues to face the long-running Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, which has killed more than 35,000 people and displaced over 2 million since 2009, according to United Nations estimates.

Last month, at least 150 people were killed in coordinated raids on villages in north-central Nigeria, underscoring the growing reach and firepower of armed groups. Analysts and officials warn that more herders and militia fighters are taking up arms, further destabilizing rural areas.

The latest mosque attack adds to fears that violence in the northwest is spiraling beyond the government’s control, even as military deployments attempt to contain the unrest.

Bandits Kill Police Officer and Colleague in Zamfara Two Weeks After Promotion in Nigeria

ZAMFARA STATE (BN24) — Armed bandits have killed two Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) operatives in a deadly attack on Tsafe town in Zamfara State, just two weeks after one of the officers received a promotion. The violent incident occurred late Sunday night, August 17, 2025, when the bandits launched an assault on the outskirts of Tsafe along Yankuzo road, according to a security source who spoke to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.

The source revealed that the two officers, who were on duty in the area, came under heavy gunfire from the attackers and were killed in the ensuing confrontation. One of the victims, Abdulhamid Abubakar Gobir, had recently been promoted from corporal to sergeant just two weeks prior to the attack. He was on special assignment from MOPOL 22 PMF Lagos State at the time of the incident.

A colleague confirmed the tragic loss, noting that Gobir’s dedication to duty was well recognized within the Mobile Police Force. The slain officer was laid to rest at the 42 PMF Mobile Base in Gusau on Monday, August 18.

The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State, where banditry and violence continue to threaten law enforcement officers and civilians alike.

Female Corps Member Stripped Naked And Beaten By Gun-Wielding Vigilante Officers In Anambra, Nigeria

0

AWKA, Nigeria (BN24) — A shocking video has surfaced showing a female corps member stripped naked and beaten by armed vigilante officers in Anambra State, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.

The victim, identified as Jennifer Edema Elohor, was attacked on July 23, 2025, by operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as Agunechemba Vigilante Group, according to the Haven360 Foundation. The human rights group said the vigilantes stormed the corps members’ lodge and accused residents of engaging in cybercrime, commonly called “Yahoo Yahoo.”

Despite presenting their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniforms and identity cards, Elohor was dragged outside, assaulted and stripped naked by the gun-wielding officers. Video footage shows her crying and pleading while being repeatedly struck, as one officer laughed during the assault.

The Haven360 Foundation condemned the attack as a gross violation of human rights and urged the Anambra State government to investigate, identify and prosecute those responsible.

The viral video has fueled nationwide outrage, with rights advocates demanding stronger protection for corps members and stricter regulation of vigilante groups operating in Anambra and across Nigeria.

Iran Executes Man In Public For Murder Of Family Of Four In Fars Province

0

TEHRAN, Iran (BN24) — Iranian authorities on Tuesday carried out a public execution of a man convicted of murdering a family of four in Fars province, state media reported.

The execution took place in the southern city of Beyram on August 19 after the man was found guilty of killing a mother and her three children during a robbery in October 2024, according to Mizan, the judiciary’s official news outlet.

Mizan said the man and his wife were both charged in connection with the killings. They were sentenced to death in February 2025, and the country’s Supreme Court upheld the verdict in April.

While the man was hanged in public, officials confirmed that his wife’s execution will be carried out inside prison at an unspecified date.

Iran imposes the death penalty for crimes including murder and rape, with rights groups such as Amnesty International reporting that the country carries out the second-highest number of executions worldwide, after China.

Man Banned From All UK Football Stadiums For Racial Abuse Of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo

0

LIVERPOOL, England (BN24) — A 47-year-old man has been banned from attending all football stadiums across the United Kingdom after he was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during the Premier League season opener at Anfield.

The incident occurred during the 29th minute of the match between Liverpool and Bournemouth on Friday, prompting a temporary halt in play after Semenyo reported the abuse to the match official. The Premier League forward alerted the referee immediately, leading to swift intervention and subsequent police involvement.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man, a resident of Liverpool, was taken into custody the following day. He was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and has since been conditionally bailed. His bail conditions include a comprehensive ban from attending any regulated football matches in the UK and a one-mile exclusion zone around any designated stadium on matchdays.

The force said the investigation remains ongoing and that officers are working in close collaboration with Liverpool Football Club to support both the case and broader anti-racism efforts.

Semenyo, 25, later addressed the incident in a statement posted on social media, saying the night at Anfield was one he would never forget. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from his AFC Bournemouth teammates, Liverpool players, fans, and Premier League officials, all of whom he praised for their “professional” and united response.

The Premier League, clubs, and players continue to reinforce their zero-tolerance stance on racism in football, with governing bodies encouraging fans to report abuse and stand in solidarity with those affected.
