US Army Black Hawk Crash Tied to Continuity of Government Mission 

The US Army Black Hawk helicopter that collided with a passenger jet in Washington on Wednesday was on a classified training flight tied to a seldom-discussed mission aimed at evacuating senior government officials in the event of an attack, according to defense officials. 

The military mission, known as “continuity of government” and “continuity of operations,” ensures the US government remains functional during national emergencies. 

Most days, crews like the one involved in the crash transport VIPs around Washington, where helicopter traffic is frequent. 

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the Black Hawk crew’s connection to the mission during a White House press briefing on Thursday, explaining that they were conducting routine, annual re-training of night flights along a designated government evacuation corridor. 

12th Aviation Battalion’s Role in Crisis Response 

The three soldiers killed in the crash were part of the 12th Aviation Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, which is tasked with evacuating Pentagon officials during national crises. Another 64 people died aboard the passenger aircraft. 

Flying with night vision goggles, the Black Hawk crew was conducting their mission along the Potomac River on a flight path known as Route 4. Amid scrutiny over military flight operations near a busy airport, officials have pointed to the battalion’s crucial role in national security. 

“Some of their mission is to support the Department of Defense if something really bad happens in this area, and we need to move our senior leaders,” said Jonathan Koziol, chief of staff for the Army’s Aviation Directorate. 

9/11: A Rare Activation of the Continuity Mission 

The last known activation of a US continuity of operations mission occurred during the September 11, 2001 attacks, when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked airliners and struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people. 

At that time, the 12th Aviation Battalion was tasked with transporting senior leaders to undisclosed locations. 

“The battalion helped transport some senior leaders out of Washington, D.C., to ‘hide sites,’” said Bradley Bowman, a former Army aviation officer who participated in 9/11 emergency flights with the battalion. 

That evening, Bowman flew a Black Hawk to retrieve then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz from one of these sites and return him to the Pentagon. 

The Pentagon’s designated helicopter landing pad had been destroyed in the attack, forcing Bowman and his crew to improvise. 

“We just repositioned and landed in the traffic circle of I-395, which had been closed by that point,” Bowman recalled. 

Wolfowitz later described being transported to a secure underground site designed to withstand nuclear war. 

The location, known as Raven Rock Mountain Complex, or “Site R,” is located near Camp David and remains one of three primary emergency relocation facilities for US government leaders. 

“It’s 100 percent operational today,” said historian Garrett Graff, author of a book on government continuity. “There’s a team of maybe 100 personnel inside Raven Rock right now, ready to pick up the pieces of the US government if needed.”

Trump Announces Venezuela Will Accept Deported Migrants from U.S. 

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Venezuela has agreed to accept the return of all Venezuelan nationals in the United States without legal status, including gang members. 

“Venezuela has agreed to receive, back into their country, all Venezuelan illegal aliens who were encamped in the U.S., including gang members of Tren de Aragua,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He added that Venezuela has committed to providing transportation for the deportees. 

The Venezuelan government has not yet responded to requests for comment. 

Trump’s statement came a day after U.S. envoy Richard Grenell met with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas and secured the release of six detained U.S. citizens. 

The White House said Grenell’s visit does not signal a shift in U.S. policy toward recognizing Maduro’s government. The two nations have experienced strained relations in recent years, marked by economic sanctions, diplomatic disputes, and allegations of coup attempts. 

Grenell emphasized that no financial or policy concessions were made to Maduro. 

“The only reward for Maduro was my physical presence, the first senior U.S. official to visit the country in years,” Grenell told The Wall Street Journal. “It was a big gift to him to have a visit by an envoy of President Trump.” 

Maduro expressed optimism following the meeting, stating, “We have made a first step. Hopefully, it can continue.” 

Trump framed the agreement as a major step in his administration’s efforts to reduce illegal immigration. 

“We are in the process of removing record numbers of illegal aliens from all countries, and all countries have agreed to accept these illegal aliens back,” Trump said. 

The agreement with Venezuela comes as the Trump administration moves to increase deportations of migrants from Latin America. 

Last Sunday, the U.S. and Colombia reached a deal to accept military aircraft carrying deported migrants, avoiding a potential trade dispute. 

Meanwhile, Mexico has declined to accept U.S. military deportation flights but confirmed it has received non-Mexican migrants from the United States in recent weeks. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested that other Central American nations could also negotiate similar agreements with Washington. 

Since taking office on Jan. 20, Trump has issued a series of executive orders aimed at tightening immigration enforcement, including policies designed to accelerate deportations of migrants without legal status.

Plane Crash in Northeast Philadelphia Sparks Explosion, Sets Multiple Homes on Fire

Emergency crews are responding to a plane crash and explosion in Northeast Philadelphia near Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue, authorities confirmed Friday. 

Philadelphia police told CBS News Philadelphia that a small plane crashed in the area, igniting multiple home and business fires. Two people were aboard the aircraft, but it remains unclear whether they were ejected or escaped. Several injuries have been reported on the ground, though details on their conditions are not yet available. 

Police sources said debris from the plane struck cars, and fires have been reported at businesses near Roosevelt Mall. Residents in the surrounding neighborhood reported feeling their homes shake when the plane went down. 

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash or the aircraft’s origin and destination. Firefighters and emergency responders remain on the scene as they work to contain the fires and assess the damage. 

Trudeau Vows Immediate Response if U.S. Imposes Tariffs on Canada, Warns of Economic Challenges

Canada will take swift and decisive action if the United States follows through on its threat to impose tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday, cautioning that Canadians could face economic hardship in the weeks ahead. 

President Donald Trump has set a Saturday deadline to implement a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. The White House says the move is aimed at addressing illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis. 

Speaking to an advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations, Trudeau emphasized that Canada is at a pivotal moment and will not hesitate to respond. 

“We’re ready with a response—a purposeful, forceful, but reasonable, immediate response. It’s not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act,” Trudeau said in televised remarks, adding that all options remain on the table. 

The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner, with 75 percent of Canadian exports destined for the U.S. economy. The proposed tariffs could significantly disrupt trade, leading to economic uncertainty. 

“I won’t sugarcoat it—our nation could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks,” Trudeau warned. 

Despite the potential challenges, he assured Canadians that the government is prepared to protect their interests. 

“I know Canadians might be anxious and worried, but I want them to know the federal government, and indeed, all orders of government, have their backs,” he said.

Trump Imposes Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, Citing Fentanyl Crisis and Trade Deficits

The White House announced Friday that President Donald Trump will impose new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China starting Saturday. The duties will include 25 percent tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports as part of a broader trade policy shift. 

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the tariffs are a response to illegal fentanyl trafficking, which she claimed has contributed to the deaths of tens of millions of Americans. She added that the administration is also targeting undocumented migration and trade deficits with U.S. neighbors. 

“These are promises made and promises kept by the President,” Leavitt told reporters at a White House briefing. 

Trump, who had previously threatened tariffs of up to 60 percent on Chinese goods during his election campaign, has so far opted for a more measured approach. Instead of immediate action upon returning to office, he initially ordered a review of trade policies before moving forward with these latest tariffs. 

The move is expected to escalate trade tensions, particularly with Canada, Mexico, and China—America’s three largest trading partners, which collectively accounted for 40 percent of U.S. imports last year. 

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded Friday, warning that Canada would retaliate: 

“It’s not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act.” 

Both Canada and Mexico have signaled they are considering countermeasures while also seeking to reassure Washington that they are addressing concerns about border security.

Black Hawk Female Pilot’s Name Withheld, Raising Questions Amid Fatal D.C. Collision

The U.S. Army’s decision to withhold the name of a Black Hawk pilot involved in a deadly midair collision near Ronald Reagan National Airport has sparked widespread speculation and debate. The crash, which occurred Wednesday night over the Potomac River, marked the first fatal commercial aviation accident in the U.S. since 2009. 

The collision involved a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. The Black Hawk was transporting three soldiers. 

The Army confirmed the identities of two soldiers: Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O’Hara, 28, who is “believed to be deceased pending positive identification,” and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Loyd Eaves, 39, whose remains have not yet been recovered and is listed as “duty status-whereabouts unknown.” 

The third pilot, whose name has not been released at the request of the family, is also classified as duty status-whereabouts unknown. However, in a Thursday briefing, Jonathan Koziol, Army aviation chief of staff, confirmed the pilot commanding the Black Hawk was a woman. 

Speculation Over Withheld Name 

The decision not to release the pilot’s name has fueled speculation, particularly among conservative commentators and political figures online. 

– Matt Walsh, conservative commentator, on X: “The military is withholding the name of the female helicopter pilot. This is totally unacceptable. The helicopter was involved in, and may have actually caused, one of the worst airline disasters in American history. We have a right to know the names.”

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, with reports indicating that the Black Hawk was flying at a higher altitude and at least a half-mile off its preapproved flight path. Officials believe recovering the wreckage from the river will provide critical answers. 

Lt. Col. Erika A. Holownia, commander of the 12th Aviation Battalion, stated Friday: “Each of our fallen soldiers were exceptional leaders and teammates. Their legacy and honorable service to our nation will forever remain.”

As investigations continue, the Army remains firm in its decision to respect the family’s privacy, despite mounting public demand for full disclosure. 

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Indicted for Trafficking at Least Three Women, Prosecutors Say

Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs faces new criminal charges related to an alleged 20-year scheme of sexual abuse and sex trafficking, according to a three-count indictment filed Thursday by prosecutors.

The indictment expands the scope of the previous charges, now identifying at least three women trafficked by Combs across state lines and internationally for commercial sex.

Combs, 55, pleaded not guilty to the original charges filed last September, which involved one victim. His trial is set for May 5 in Manhattan federal court, with prosecutors seeking a new arraignment. Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, reaffirmed his client’s commitment to fighting the charges, stating that Combs is focused on winning at trial.

The latest indictment accuses Combs of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transporting individuals to engage in prostitution.

Authorities allege that Combs used his business empire, including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment, to exploit women, coercing them into taking part in “freak offs” — recorded sexual performances involving male sex workers, sometimes transported across state lines.

Prosecutors also allege Combs subjected his employees and others to abuse and violence, enticing women with drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy, and methamphetamines, as well as financial support and promises of career advancement or romantic relationships.

One of the identified victims is former girlfriend and R&B singer Cassie Ventura, who accused Combs in a civil lawsuit of physical abuse and sexual slavery, though she settled the case shortly after filing.

In a 2016 incident that mirrored Ventura’s allegations, prosecutors said Combs was captured on hotel security footage striking and dragging a woman trying to leave a “freak off.”

Combs, also known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, founded Bad Boy Records and played a key role in launching the careers of artists such as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, and The Notorious B.I.G. However, his career has faced setbacks since federal agents raided his homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach in early 2024, finding drugs and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant linked to the alleged abuse.

Combs remains incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since his September arrest. He continues to deny all allegations of wrongdoing and faces multiple civil lawsuits for sexual assault and misconduct.

Russia Tightens Grip on Key Ukrainian City of Pokrovsk Amid Escalating Conflict

Russian forces are intensifying their efforts to encircle the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, a crucial logistical hub that has been increasingly isolated since the start of Moscow’s invasion nearly three years ago.

While Ukrainian defenders continue to resist, the city’s fall or encirclement would grant Russia a strategic advantage, potentially opening the door for broader offensives across eastern Ukraine and increasing pressure on Kyiv.

Pokrovsk, once home to 60,000 residents, now has a population of just 7,000, according to the regional governor. The city is facing dire conditions, with essential services dwindling. The last post office has closed, and mail is now delivered by armored truck.

Strategically located, Pokrovsk lies along a vital east-west highway, which Russian troops have threatened to disrupt. Russian forces are now within artillery and drone range of the highway, with most vehicles in the area opting for safer, less direct routes.

Moscow’s military has also made significant advances along the rail line connecting Pokrovsk to the logistical hub of Dnipro in central Ukraine, heightening the urgency of the situation.

Ukraine’s 59th Assault Brigade, defending Pokrovsk, continues to face heavy Russian assaults. “The situation is generally difficult, the enemy is constantly attacking on foot,” said Phoenix, the deputy commander of the brigade.

He described Russian forces as having superior numbers, frequently launching attacks in small, high-casualty groups, and using the terrain and poor weather conditions to avoid detection by Ukrainian drones. “Day and night they are moving forwards,” Phoenix stated.

Pokrovsk’s significance lies in its role as a supply center, vital for sustaining Ukrainian forces on the frontline. However, ongoing threats from Russian artillery and drones have severely limited its ability to function as a logistical hub in recent months.

3 Israeli Hostages, Including U.S. Citizen, to Be Released by Hamas in Gaza on Saturday 

Palestinian militant group Hamas announced Friday it will release three Israeli hostages, including a dual U.S. citizen, as part of the ongoing hostage-prisoner exchange with Israel.

Hamas’ armed wing spokesperson, Abu Obeida, stated that Yarden Bibas, Keith Siegel, and Ofer Kalderon will be freed on Saturday. Their release follows the group’s continued negotiations with Israeli officials. 

Bibas is the father of nine-month-old Kfir Bibas and four-year-old Ariel Bibas, both abducted during Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, cross-border attack on Israel. The fate of the two children and their mother, Shiri Bibas, remains unclear. Hamas previously claimed in late 2023 that they were killed in Israeli airstrikes during the early months of the Gaza war. 

The upcoming release is part of a broader ceasefire deal that has paused hostilities after more than 15 months of conflict. Under the agreement, 33 hostages held by Hamas are to be freed within the first six weeks of the truce in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, many of whom have been serving long-term or life sentences in Israeli prisons. 

On Thursday, Hamas released three Israeli and five Thai hostages, while Israel freed 110 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas’ prisoner information office confirmed that 90 Palestinian detainees, including nine serving life sentences, will be exchanged for the three Israeli hostages on Saturday. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced criticism for not securing an earlier agreement, particularly after the intelligence failure that allowed Hamas-led militants to cross into Israeli communities on Oct. 7. The attack resulted in more than 1,200 Israeli deaths and over 250 hostages taken, marking the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. 

Israel’s retaliatory military operations in Gaza have killed over 47,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The ongoing conflict has devastated infrastructure in the enclave, where 2.3 million people face severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine. 

Despite sustained Israeli airstrikes and military campaigns, Hamas continues to operate within Gaza, maintaining control over parts of the territory. Israel has also targeted Hamas leaders and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon as regional tensions escalate. 

Further discussions are expected ahead of Feb. 4, when the second phase of the hostage deal is set to begin. Negotiators aim to secure the release of 60 additional hostages, including Israeli military personnel, in exchange for more Palestinian detainees. A full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza remains a key demand in the talks. 

If successful, the negotiations could lead to a formal end to the war and initiate reconstruction efforts in Gaza. However, uncertainty remains as tensions between Hamas and Israeli officials persist. 

Trump Says Black Hawk Helicopter in DC Crash Was Flying Too High 

President Donald Trump said Friday that the Army Black Hawk helicopter involved in a collision with a regional passenger jet in Washington, D.C., was flying above the permitted altitude at the time of the accident. His statement appeared to reveal new details about the ongoing investigation. 

The U.S. Army has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident. 

Military helicopters frequently travel along Route 4, a designated air corridor over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. For safety reasons, flight altitude in the area is restricted to a maximum of 200 feet (61 meters). 

“The Black Hawk helicopter was flying too high, by a lot. It was far above the 200-foot limit,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “That’s not really too complicated to understand.” The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and federal aviation officials are investigating the crash. 

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that initial findings suggested an altitude violation involving the Black Hawk. Army investigators are conducting an on-site review. 

According to Hegseth and Army officials, the helicopter’s three-person crew was highly experienced. The Army identified the instructor pilot, who served as the designated pilot in command, as having 1,000 flight hours, while the co-pilot had accumulated 500 hours. 

A third crew member, a crew chief, was aboard the aircraft at the time of the collision. The Black Hawk was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion, based at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, which oversees helicopter transport in the Washington, D.C., area and provides air support for senior U.S. government officials. 

Federal authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
