Hamas Releases Video of Israeli Hostage Liri Albag as Qatar Negotiations Resume

Hamas released a video Saturday of Liri Albag, a 19-year-old Israeli soldier taken hostage during the group’s October 2023 attack. The video, which runs three and a half minutes, shows Albag appealing in Hebrew for her release.

Albag’s family, speaking through the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, criticized the release of the video, saying it was unauthorized and distressing. “This is not the daughter and sister we know. Her severe psychological distress is evident,” the family said in a statement. They urged Israeli officials and global leaders to ensure the return of all hostages held in Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to securing the hostages’ release. “Anyone who dares to harm our hostages will bear full responsibility for their actions,” he said in a statement.

Albag was 18 when she was captured at the Nahal Oz military base near the Gaza border. She is one of 96 hostages still held in Gaza, out of the 251 abducted during the October 2023 attack. The Israeli military has confirmed that 34 of the hostages have died.

Negotiations to secure a ceasefire and release the hostages resumed Friday in Qatar, mediated by officials from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed that an Israeli delegation traveled to Qatar to participate in the indirect talks.

“Efforts are underway to free the hostages,” Gallant told relatives of Albag, according to a statement from his office.

Weekly demonstrations organized by the hostages’ families continue to pressure Netanyahu’s government to prioritize the return of those held in Gaza. On Thursday, Netanyahu’s office announced that Israeli negotiators had joined the latest round of discussions in Qatar.

Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad have previously released videos of hostages during the conflict, underscoring the high stakes of the ongoing negotiations.

Nicki Minaj Faces Lawsuit From Ex-Assistant Alleging Assault During Pink Friday 2 Tour

Nicki Minaj is embroiled in legal controversy after a former employee, Brandon Garrett, accused her of assault and battery during her 2024 Pink Friday 2 tour. Garrett, who claimed he worked as Minaj’s tour manager, filed a lawsuit on January 3, alleging an altercation occurred backstage after a concert in Detroit.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the dispute arose when Minaj summoned Garrett to her dressing room, upset to learn he had assigned another assistant to pick up her prescription. Garrett explained that his workload during the tour, which included arranging venues, private jets, and accommodations, had required him to delegate certain tasks. However, Minaj allegedly responded with hostility, shouting, “Are you f—ing crazy having him pick up my prescription?” and adding, “If my husband [Kenneth Petty] was here, he would knock out your f—ing teeth.”

Garrett claims that the confrontation escalated when Minaj “open-handedly struck” him on the face and wrist. Hours later, he was informed that he was no longer part of the tour team for the Chicago stop.

Through her attorney, Minaj has denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit “false and frivolous.” Judd Burstein, Minaj’s lawyer, stated, “We are confident that the matter brought by this ex-assistant will be resolved swiftly in Mrs. Petty’s favor.”

Minaj has faced other legal and public challenges in her career. In 2024, she was arrested in Amsterdam after marijuana pre-rolls were found in her luggage. Minaj claimed the drugs belonged to her security team and suggested the incident was part of a larger effort to sabotage her tour. The Dutch authorities fined Minaj and allowed her to continue her journey.

Since breaking into the music industry with her debut album Pink Friday in 2010, Minaj has experienced significant highs and lows, balancing immense success with controversies that continue to make headlines. This latest lawsuit adds to the complex narrative of her public and professional life.

World’s Biggest Open-Air Drug Den: Inside São Paulo’s Infamous ‘Crackland’

In São Paulo, an area infamously known as Cracolândia—Portuguese for “Crackland”—has become the world’s largest open-air drug den, plagued by addiction, violence, and despair. For over 30 years, this sprawling zone has been a harrowing testament to Brazil’s struggle with drug addiction and social inequality.

Cracolândia stretches across an area comparable to London’s Soho, drawing hundreds of users daily. Teenagers as young as 13 roam its streets alongside weathered adults, scavenging for recyclables to afford crack cocaine, which costs mere cents.

Garbage accumulates in heaps, and the air is filled with the stench of waste, creating an apocalyptic scene that has earned comparisons to “walking corpses” by local police.

Despite its grim reality, Cracolândia sits conspicuously close to São Paulo’s main train station, Luz, and within blocks of colleges, offices, and cultural hubs.

This stark juxtaposition of bustling city life against scenes of deprivation underscores the zone’s infamy and the failure of successive government efforts to dismantle it.

Each new mayor vows to rid São Paulo of Cracolândia, only to see the area resurge. In 2017, Mayor João Doria declared “Crackland is over” after deploying nearly 1,000 police officers armed with rubber bullets and grenades to clear the zone.

But within months, the drug-fueled “fluxo,” or congregation of users, reappeared just meters away, defying attempts at permanent eradication.

Cracolândia’s resilience is a symptom of Brazil’s broader struggles. The nation has the world’s highest number of crack users, an estimated 370,000 concentrated in urban centers.

São Paulo’s role as Brazil’s economic hub and its proximity to cocaine-producing countries make it a focal point for drug trafficking, controlled by powerful gangs.

Efforts to rehabilitate the area, such as the 2014 Open Arms program offering shelter and small cash payments for work, showed promise but were ultimately dismantled amid criticism. Meanwhile, the proliferation of “mini-Cracolândias” across the city highlights the intractable nature of the problem.

As São Paulo’s mayors continue to grapple with the challenge, experts argue that piecemeal strategies and short-term political goals are insufficient.

Without a unified, scientifically informed national policy, Cracolândia remains a haunting symbol of Brazil’s ongoing war on drugs—a no-go zone that defies solutions and traps its residents in an endless cycle of addiction.

Knife-Wielding Suspect with 87 Prior Arrests Sought in NYC Subway Stabbings

A man with a history of mental illness and 87 prior arrests is wanted in connection with two recent subway stabbings in New York City. Authorities have identified the suspect as 52-year-old Jamar Banks, cautioning officers to approach him with “extreme caution” as he is believed to be armed with a large knife. Banks is reportedly a frequent rider of the No. 2 and No. 5 subway lines, according to the NYPD.

The suspect is being sought for two incidents that occurred earlier this week. On January 1, he allegedly approached a 31-year-old man from behind on a No. 2 train at 14th Street and Seventh Avenue, initiating an argument before stabbing the victim in the back and fleeing the scene. The following day, January 2, Banks is suspected of stabbing an off-duty MTA cleaner on a northbound No. 6 train platform at the Pelham Bay station in the Bronx. The victim suffered wounds to his back and armpit but remains in stable condition.

Banks has an extensive criminal history, including charges of attempted murder, assault, weapons possession, and other offenses. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Banks holding a knife in gloved hands during one of the attacks.

This isn’t Banks’ first alleged subway-related crime. In October 2022, he was accused of stabbing a man in the leg on a Manhattan No. 2 train. Previous incidents in his criminal record date back to the 1990s, including a 1997 charge of attempted murder when Banks allegedly shot a man in the leg following a minor bump on the street.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant. Anyone with information about Jamar Banks’ whereabouts is encouraged to contact the NYPD.

NYC Robbery Crew Targets Nearly 50 Stores, Steals ATMs and Thousands in Cash: NYPD

A robbery spree has swept across New York City, with a trio of thieves targeting 49 businesses over three months and making off with ATMs and tens of thousands of dollars, according to the NYPD. The incidents occurred between September 19 and December 26, spanning Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. Police revealed that the suspects used stolen vehicles for their heists, looting ATMs and other items from various stores before fleeing the scenes.

During two September robberies, the crew reportedly took nearly $40,000 in cash from ATMs. While a full tally of the stolen amount has not been disclosed, the thefts highlight the organized and methodical nature of the operation. Surveillance footage from December 23 captured two suspects removing wires from an ATM inside a grocery store at 75-10 31st Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, around 1:20 a.m., shedding light on their tactics.

The NYPD has called on the public for assistance in identifying the suspects involved in these crimes. So far, no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted online at the Crime Stoppers website or via the NYPD’s X account @NYPDTips.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea: Highlights, Player Ratings, and Key Stats from Premier League Clash

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s late equalizer salvaged a point for Crystal Palace as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Cole Palmer’s brilliant opener for Chelsea was canceled out in the 82nd minute, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.

Match Summary

Chelsea dominated possession early on and made their breakthrough in the 14th minute when Cole Palmer latched onto a precise cross from Jadon Sancho, drilling the ball into the bottom corner for his 13th Premier League goal of the season.

However, the Blues were unable to extend their lead despite sustained pressure. Crystal Palace capitalized on their resilience late in the game, with Eberechi Eze setting up Jean-Philippe Mateta, who calmly slotted the ball home to level the score.

Chelsea’s failure to convert their dominance into goals stretched their winless Premier League run to four matches. While they remain in fourth place, they are now nine points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. Meanwhile, Palace, sitting 15th, continued their unbeaten streak to three games and widened the gap from the relegation zone to six points.

Man City Crush West Ham 4-1 as Haaland and Savinho Star

Manchester City secured their first back-to-back Premier League victories since October with a commanding 4-1 win over West Ham United, powered by Erling Haaland’s brace and Savinho’s creative brilliance. The victory keeps City sixth in the table but narrows the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea to just two points.

Despite West Ham’s aggressive start, City took control through Vladimir Coufal’s tenth-minute own goal, forced by Savinho’s cross. Haaland extended the lead before halftime, connecting with another Savinho delivery. The Brazilian-City combination proved lethal again after the break, with Savinho setting up Haaland’s second before Phil Foden added a fourth following a West Ham defensive error.

The result marked West Ham’s 19th consecutive Premier League defeat against City, a club record for losses against a single opponent. Niclas Fullkrug’s late consolation goal did little to soften the blow for Julen Lopetegui’s team, who remain 13th and eight points above relegation.

Savinho’s performance highlighted City’s resurgence, with the Brazilian completing both attempted dribbles and effectively creating three goals, though only two count officially as assists. The display followed his goal and assist against Leicester City last weekend, suggesting a key role in City’s improved form.

The champions dominated key statistics with 56% possession and seven shots on target from ten attempts, while West Ham managed four on target from seventeen shots. Both teams now turn their attention to FA Cup fixtures, with City hosting Salford City and West Ham traveling to Aston Villa.

Biden Administration Notifies Congress of $8 Billion Weapons Sale to Israel

The Biden administration has informed Congress of a planned $8 billion arms sale to Israel, U.S. officials said Saturday, as the nation continues its conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

The proposed sale includes medium-range air-to-air missiles, 155 mm artillery shells, Hellfire AGM-114 missiles, and 500-pound bombs, among other items, U.S. officials revealed on condition of anonymity because the formal notification to Congress has not yet been submitted. While some weapons may come from existing U.S. stockpiles, the bulk of the equipment is expected to take years for delivery.

The sale adds to the $17.9 billion in military aid that the U.S. has provided Israel since the outbreak of the war on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack.

The Biden administration has faced criticism over the rising civilian death toll in Gaza. Protests have erupted on college campuses, and some Democratic lawmakers, led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., have attempted to block the sale of offensive weapons to Israel.

In May, the U.S. paused a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel over concerns about civilian casualties during an assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. However, after citing limited progress in humanitarian aid distribution, the administration in November chose not to restrict arms transfers as initially warned.

Israeli airstrikes have intensified in recent days, reportedly killing dozens in Gaza, adding to the tens of thousands of fatalities since the war began. The Israeli military has stated that it targets Hamas operatives and accuses the militant group of using civilian areas as shields.

The conflict has displaced nearly 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom now face harsh winter conditions in makeshift shelters near the coast.

The informal notice to Congress initiates a review by leaders of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before the sale can proceed.

News of the weapons package was first reported by Axios.

Brazilian Ex-Official Returns Toilet Removed from Office

A former city councilor, Janaína Lima, in Brazil has returned a toilet and two sinks she had removed from her office after losing her bid for re-election, sparking widespread backlash on social media.

Footage surfaced of an employee of Janaína Lima, a former Sao Paulo councilwoman, hauling away the bathroom fixtures as her term ended. Lima later clarified on X, formerly Twitter, that she had personally funded the renovations during her eight-year tenure and was following legal guidance to remove personal items.

“I decided to donate the equipment I acquired with my own resources to the chamber,” Lima wrote, adding, “Obviously, neither I nor my advisers need a toilet.”

CCTV footage captured the removal of the facilities, which were installed when Lima first assumed office. She stated the renovations were paid for with her own money and did not constitute council property.

Lima said other personal installations, including a glass partition and industrial-style light fixtures, were left for her successor. She also noted the building’s hydraulics were “sensitive” and required special care.

Her successor, Adrilles Jorge of the Brazilian Labour Party, who won her seat in the 2024 elections, joked about the situation during his inauguration. “We’ll use a communal potty until this is resolved,” Jorge told Brazilian media outlet G1.

“I visited the office and thought the architecture was brilliant. But she took everything out. They even took out the toilet and the sink,” Jorge said.

Ricardo Teixeira, the new president of the Sao Paulo City Council, said “appropriate measures” would be taken regarding the matter.

Gunmen from Nigeria Kill Five Cameroonian Soldiers, Lawmaker Says

Gunmen from Nigeria killed at least five Cameroonian soldiers and injured several others in an attack on the border village of Bakinjaw, a Cameroonian lawmaker and local leader reported Saturday.

The assault, which occurred early Friday, involved hundreds of armed Fulani herdsmen crossing the border from Nigeria’s Taraba state to target a military post, according to Aka Martin Tyoga, a member of parliament for the Akwaya district in southwestern Cameroon.

Tyoga said the attack was carried out in retaliation for an operation the previous day in which Cameroonian soldiers killed several herdsmen.

Agwa Linus, the traditional ruler of Bakinjaw, confirmed the incident and said the attackers also burned down his home.

“This is not the first time they are attacking—it’s very unfortunate,” Linus said.

The region has experienced repeated clashes as armed groups seek to expand their control over border territories.
