The remains of Caleb Chiemele have been recovered from a short-let apartment on the LSDPC Estate, off Freedom Way, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, Nigeria.
PUNCH Metro reported on Monday that Chiemele, who had been staying in the apartment since May 12, did not come out of his apartment on June 12. Out of concern, some individuals, including the owner of the apartment, Adewole Olufemi, decided to check on him. Peeping through his window, they found Chiemele lying motionless on the floor.
Realizing Chiemele was unresponsive, they alerted the police from the Maroko Division. The police forced the door open and, upon assessing Chiemele’s condition, determined he had died.
A source, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Chiemele’s body had been removed and deposited in the morgue.
The source said, “The corpse was discovered around 8 pm on June 12, 2024, at a short-let apartment on the LSDPC Estate, off Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. The short-let was owned by one Adewole Olufemi. He reported to the police that Caleb Chiemele had stayed in his short-let apartment since May 12, 2024.
“But around 5 pm on June 12, they noticed that Caleb had not been seen since the morning and, based on that observation, they decided to peep through the window and saw him lying on the floor in the apartment.”
When the police were informed, they visited the apartment and found Chiemele deceased.
A Spanish tourist met a tragic end at South Africa’s renowned Pilanesberg National Park when he was trampled to death by an elephant after leaving his vehicle to photograph a small herd. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg, park officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to police spokesman Sabata Mokgwabone, the 43-year-old man was traveling with his fiancee and two other women in their own vehicle when they encountered three elephants and three calves. “Reports suggest that the man stopped the vehicle, alighted and went closer to the elephants to take pictures,” Mokgwabone stated. “The elephants allegedly attacked and killed him.”
Pieter Nel, chief conservation officer at the North West province’s Parks and Tourism Board, explained that the matriarch of the herd became “agitated” upon seeing the tourist approach and subsequently attacked. Nel emphasized that this is “normal behaviour” for elephants attempting to “defend the young ones.”
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with wildlife encounters and the importance of adhering to park safety guidelines. Visitors to wildlife reserves are typically instructed to remain in their vehicles at all times to ensure their safety and minimize disturbance to the animals.
The event underscores the delicate balance between wildlife tourism and conservation efforts, highlighting the need for continued education and awareness about responsible wildlife viewing practices. As tourism in African national parks continues to grow, incidents like this emphasize the critical importance of respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance at all times.
Jonathan Meijer, a prolific sperm donor, has strongly criticized the portrayal of him in Netflix’s latest docuseries and announced he is preparing a slander suit.
Released Wednesday, “The Man With 1000 Kids” features interviews with various couples and individual women who discovered that their sperm donor, Meijer, had fathered hundreds of children worldwide through multiple sperm banks and private donations. This raises concerns about the risk of inbreeding among half-siblings who may be unaware of their relationships.
Meijer, who did not participate in the docuseries, claims he has fathered approximately 550 children, not the 1,000 suggested by the title. However, the documentary alleges he lied to many families about the number of offspring he produced.
Responding to the docuseries online, Meijer said in a YouTube video last week that when he first began donating, he did inform families of the exact number of children he had helped create. But he later chose to stop giving out the real estimate.
“Technically I did not lie,” Meijer told NBC News in an email Monday. I followed the guidelines of every large commercial international sperm bank that does not inform the recipients about the amount of offspring one donor will produce,” Meijer wrote, adding, “I was doing a much better thing, I gave the parents an estimated number, this was better and more info than they would ever get at any clinic.
Eve Wiley, a fertility fraud activist who Meijer said has “nothing to do with [him],” estimated in the show that Meijer could have fathered thousands of children, depending on how many straws of his sperm were successfully used.
The U.S. men’s soccer team is set to make a triumphant return to the Olympics for the first time since 2008. The roster, announced Monday morning, showcases a mix of rising stars and seasoned players, marking a significant moment as they prepare to compete in the Paris Games, starting July 24.
This eagerly awaited announcement was first revealed on NBC’s “TODAY” show. The U.S. team will face off against host nation France in their opening match, just two days before the official opening ceremony of the Paris Games.
The U.S. men’s team had missed out on the last three Olympic Games, failing to qualify in 2012, 2016, and 2020. However, they are now ready to break their nearly two-decade absence from the Olympic stage.
In their last Olympic appearance in 2008, the U.S. team finished ninth in the tournament. The gold medal that year went to Argentina, with Nigeria taking silver and Brazil securing bronze.
The current U.S. squad, led by head coach Marko Mitrović, includes a diverse group of players from various clubs and hometowns. Key players include goalkeepers Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew; St. Charles, Missouri) and Gaga Slonina (Chelsea/England; Addison, Illinois). The defensive lineup features Maximilian Dietz (Greuther Fürth/Germany; Frankfurt, Germany), Nathan Harriel (Philadelphia Union; Oldsmar, Florida), and several others from prominent clubs across the United States and Europe.

A United Airlines Boeing 757-200 aircraft successfully completed its journey from Los Angeles to Denver on Monday, despite losing a main landing gear wheel during takeoff. The incident, involving Flight 1001, occurred without any reported injuries to the 174 passengers and 7 crew members on board or to anyone on the ground.
United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event.” The airline’s swift response and the flight crew’s ability to safely land the aircraft highlight the importance of emergency protocols and pilot training in aviation.
This event follows a similar incident on March 7, when a United Boeing B777-200 lost a tire mid-air after takeoff from San Francisco. In that case, the tire landed on a car in an airport employee parking lot, fortunately without causing any injuries.
These back-to-back incidents involving wheel losses on United Airlines Boeing aircraft are likely to raise questions about maintenance procedures and aircraft reliability. Aviation authorities and United Airlines will undoubtedly conduct thorough investigations to determine the root causes and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The successful landing of Flight 1001 in Denver, despite the loss of a wheel, demonstrates the robust design of modern aircraft and the effectiveness of emergency procedures. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety and reliability of commercial air travel.
As the investigation unfolds, the aviation industry will closely monitor the findings to implement any necessary improvements in aircraft maintenance and safety protocols.
UEFA and the German soccer federation have announced that Felix Zwayer will referee England’s Euro 2024 semifinal against the Netherlands on Wednesday. This appointment has drawn attention due to Zwayer’s past involvement in a match-fixing scandal in Germany.
Zwayer, who has already officiated three matches at Euro 2024, including the Netherlands’ 3-0 victory over Romania in the round of 16, was once embroiled in controversy as a young assistant referee. In 2006, he received a six-month ban over allegations of accepting money from Robert Hoyzer, a referee banned for match-fixing.
The case, details of which were published in 2014 by German newspaper Die Zeit, stated that Zwayer accepted 300 euros from Hoyzer before a game in 2004. While there was no evidence of Zwayer manipulating any games, and he eventually provided crucial evidence in the case, the incident has continued to shadow his career.
The appointment has reignited discussions about a 2021 incident involving England midfielder Jude Bellingham. While playing for Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham was fined 40,000 euros for criticizing Zwayer’s appointment to a high-profile Bundesliga match, referencing the referee’s past.
Despite the controversy, England defender Luke Shaw dismissed concerns about Zwayer’s appointment, stating, “We have to respect UEFA on whoever they decide to pick as the ref. That won’t change anything about us. We still just focus on the game in hand.”
Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, found himself at odds with Centre Court spectators after securing a spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals with a convincing 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over 15th-seeded Holger Rune. The two-hour match was overshadowed by Djokovic’s post-match comments addressing what he perceived as disrespectful behavior from some fans.
During his on-court interview, Djokovic expressed gratitude to supportive fans but pointedly addressed those he believed were booing him, saying, “To all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player — in this case, me — have a goooood night,” elongating the word to mimic the sound of booing.
The controversy stemmed from chants of “Ruuuuuune!” by the Danish player’s supporters, which Djokovic interpreted as booing directed at him. Despite attempts by the interviewer to suggest otherwise, Djokovic maintained his stance, stating, “I’ve been on the tour for more than 20 years. So trust me, I know all the tricks.”
In his post-match press conference, Djokovic acknowledged the fans’ right to express themselves but suggested that officials could potentially intervene to calm disruptive behavior. He emphasized his focus on respectful spectators who appreciate the players’ efforts.
Rune, for his part, downplayed the incident, attributing the sounds to supportive chants from his fans and praising the overall atmosphere as “great support for both players.”
Djokovic’s victory marks his 15th Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance. The seven-time Wimbledon champion, who was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz last year, remains a formidable contender for the title.
In a significant development preceding Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial, a New Mexico judge has decided that the actor’s role as a co-producer of the Western film “Rust” is not relevant to the case. This ruling marks a major setback for prosecutors, who had planned to present evidence linking Baldwin’s producer responsibilities to the dangerous environment that led to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal in 2021.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer rejected the prosecution’s argument that Baldwin’s awareness of safety obligations as a producer should be considered in determining his guilt as an actor handling the firearm. The judge stated, “I’m denying evidence of his status as a producer,” effectively narrowing the focus of the trial to Baldwin’s actions as an actor on set.
While the judge has excluded discussion of Baldwin’s producer role, she has allowed crucial firearms experts to testify about his handling of the revolver and whether it was functioning properly before the fatal shooting. The court also permitted the presentation of graphic autopsy images and police body camera footage from the immediate aftermath of the incident.
Baldwin has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that the gun fired accidentally after he followed instructions to point it toward Hutchins. His defense team successfully barred discussion of other fatal gun incidents on movie sets, including the death of actor Brandon Lee in 1993.
The judge has also limited references to the potential dangers of blank rounds and excluded a letter from crew members disputing characterizations of the “Rust” set as chaotic or dangerous. Additionally, evidence designed to garner sympathy for Baldwin, such as expressions of remorse or impact on his family, will not be allowed at trial.
As the high-profile case moves forward, it will focus primarily on Baldwin’s actions as an actor on the day of the shooting, with the prosecution and defense preparing to present their cases within these newly defined parameters.

Ukraine will respond forcefully to a Russian missile strike that claimed at least 29 lives and damaged a children’s hospital in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared during his visit to Warsaw. The Ukrainian leader, who signed a security pact with Poland, made this statement as world leaders prepare for the upcoming NATO summit in Washington.
Zelenskiy called on Ukraine’s allies to deliver a robust response to Monday’s attack, emphasizing the need for increased resilience and support. He expressed Ukraine’s desire to use partner-supplied weapons to target Russian launch sites, seeking concrete steps from Western allies to bolster air defenses and protect the country’s energy sector.
The Ukrainian President initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in response to the Russian attack. Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk discussed potential energy assistance for Ukraine before winter, as Russia continues to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Tusk also expressed Poland’s openness to the idea of intercepting Russian missiles over Ukrainian soil if they were headed for NATO territory, emphasizing the need for clear cooperation within the alliance for such actions.
As the NATO summit approaches, all eyes will be on the alliance’s response to the escalating situation and its plans to further support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The field is set for the men’s Olympic basketball tournament in Paris, with Greece, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Spain claiming the final four spots through recent qualifying tournaments. As we look ahead to the 2024 Paris Olympics kicking off on July 27, it’s time to assess how these 12 teams stack up against each other.
Unsurprisingly, the United States remains in a league of its own. USA men’s basketball director Grant Hill has assembled what could be the strongest Olympic team since the 2008 “Redeem Team.” However, international basketball has never been better positioned to challenge American dominance.
Host nation France boasts a formidable frontcourt with Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert, while Canada fields the most NBA-level talent outside of Team USA. Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic, and Greece, featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, add to the star power. This combination of talent promises to make the 2024 tournament one of the most exciting in recent memory.
As we anticipate the start of the Paris Olympics, here’s how the 12 competing teams in men’s basketball rank:
12. South Sudan: Making their Olympic debut, South Sudan could feature Phoenix Suns center Bol Bol and standout guard Carlik Jones.
11. Japan: Led by Lakers forward Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe, Japan aims to improve on their winless showing from the Tokyo Games.
10. Brazil: Fresh off their Olympic qualifier victory, Brazil faces a tough group stage but hopes to advance with strong performances from Bruno Caboclo and company.
9. Puerto Rico: Back in the Olympics for the first time since their shocking 2004 upset over Team USA, Puerto Rico brings energy and upset potential with players like Jose Alvarado.
8. Spain: Always competitive, Spain fields a team of current and former NBA players, including Willy Hernangomez and Santiago Aldama.
6. Australia: The Boomers bring a collection of experienced NBA role players, looking to build on their bronze medal performance from Tokyo.
5. Serbia: With Nikola Jokic joining the squad, Serbia becomes a serious medal contender, pairing the NBA MVP with sharpshooter Bogdan Bogdanovic.
4. Germany: The reigning FIBA World Cup champions, led by Franz
Wagner and Dennis Schroder, look to prove their recent success was no fluke.
3. France: The addition of Victor Wembanyama to an already strong French team makes them a serious threat to challenge for gold on home soil.
2. Canada: Boasting a roster filled with NBA talent like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray, Canada has the firepower to compete with anyone.
1. USA: Featuring a mix of established superstars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry, alongside rising talents and the addition of Joel Embiid, Team USA remains the team to beat.
The stage is set for an thrilling men’s basketball tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While Team USA enters as the favorite, the level of international competition ensures that their path to gold will be far from easy.
