Mexican social media personality Cesar Gastelum was shot and killed Tuesday while livestreaming outside a fast food restaurant in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, authorities said.
Gastelum, who had roughly 600,000 to 650,000 followers on TikTok depending on the count cited, was known for comedy videos and content set to Mexican regional music. Footage of the moment, reviewed by multiple news organizations, showed him laughing with two other men in a restaurant parking lot when two people on a motorcycle, both wearing helmets, approached and one opened fire before the pair fled the scene.
A security official in Sinaloa confirmed Gastelum’s death and said a major security operation was underway following the shooting.

Mexico’s Federal Security Cabinet said Wednesday that investigators were examining whether the killing was connected to social media posts in which Gastelum referenced a faction of a criminal group. Gastelum had at times referred to himself in his videos using the term “belico,” a word used in some Mexican subcultures to signal an association with cartel culture. Messages of condolence were posted to his social media accounts Wednesday, and local news outlets published photos of candles placed near blood stains at the site of the shooting.
Culiacan and other Sinaloa cities have been the site of prolonged violence tied to a rivalry between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. According to a report from the nonprofit International Crisis Group, the factions known as Los Mayos and Los Chapitos have clashed since September 2024 for control of Culiacan, Mazatlan and other parts of the state, using firearms, armored vehicles and drones in efforts to intimidate rivals and expand territory. The factions take their names from cartel founders Ismael Zambada, known as Mayo, and Joaquin Guzman, known as Chapo, both of whom are serving life sentences in the United States on drug trafficking convictions.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the killing during her Wednesday morning press conference, saying authorities needed to determine why the killing occurred. “We must find out why this deplorable homicide occurred,” Sheinbaum said, adding that those responsible, including any mastermind behind the attack, must be arrested.
Security analyst David Saucedo said cartels target influencers for a range of reasons, including perceived ties to rival factions, romantic relationships with cartel members, or roles laundering money or spreading criminal messaging similar to journalism.
