Harry Kane Fires England Into World Cup Round of 16 With Comeback Victory Over Congo

Date:

Harry Kane delivered another defining performance for England, scoring twice in the second half to overturn an early deficit and secure a 2 1 victory over Congo on Wednesday, sending the Three Lions into the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.

The comeback victory at Mercedes Benz Stadium kept England’s title hopes alive and earned Thomas Tuchel’s side a meeting with co host Mexico in the next round, where the match will be played at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

England had fallen behind inside the opening seven minutes after Brian Cipenga capitalized on an attacking move and fired a low finish beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, giving Congo an early advantage and raising the prospect of one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities, England found Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi in outstanding form. The goalkeeper denied Jude Bellingham on multiple occasions before halftime and continued his impressive display after the break, frustrating England’s attack for much of the contest.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute.

Substitute Anthony Gordon delivered a cross from the left that Kane met with a powerful header. Although Mpasi managed to get a hand to the ball, he could not keep it out as England drew level.

Kane struck again 11 minutes later, curling a clinical finish into the top corner to complete England’s comeback and eliminate any hopes of a Congolese upset.

The two goals extended Kane’s remarkable international record to 84 goals for England and increased his World Cup tournament tally to 13, further strengthening his position as the country’s most prolific scorer in the competition.

Speaking after the match, Kane credited England’s patience and resilience.

“We kept believing our moment would come,” Kane said, as quoted by AP Sports. “In knockout football, the pressure is always greater, but I thought this was our best attacking performance of the tournament. Sometimes you simply have to battle through difficult matches, and that’s exactly what we did.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his team’s determination after recovering from an early setback.

“It shows the character and belief within this squad,” Tuchel said through AP Sports. “The players never accepted defeat as a possible outcome. We trusted ourselves, stayed focused and continued creating chances despite an outstanding performance from their goalkeeper.”

Congo came close to extending its lead before halftime when Yoane Wissa struck the post, while Mpasi produced several outstanding saves to deny Bellingham and Kane.

England also appealed for a penalty after Kane collided with Mpasi inside the penalty area, but referee Adham Makhadmeh dismissed the appeals and allowed play to continue.

Congo coach Sébastien Desabre praised his team’s effort despite the defeat.

“We believed we could achieve something special,” Desabre said through AP Sports. “We defended well for most of the match, but when you give one of the world’s best players opportunities, he can punish you.”

What We Know So Far

England advances to the Round of 16 after recovering from an early one goal deficit.

Kane scored both England goals in the second half to secure a 2 1 victory.

England will next face co host Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

Congo exits the tournament after producing one of its strongest World Cup performances in history.

What Authorities and Analysts Are Saying

Tuchel described the comeback as evidence of England’s growing maturity in knockout football and praised his players for maintaining belief throughout the match.

Sky News quoted The Athletic football writer Rob Tanner as saying Kane’s latest performance further strengthened his claim as England’s greatest ever player.

Tanner said Kane continues to deliver in the biggest moments and believes his achievements will receive even greater appreciation after his playing career ends.

Looking ahead to England’s meeting with Mexico, Tanner cautioned that the next challenge will be considerably tougher, predicting that England may not begin the contest as favorites because of Mexico’s home advantage and the demanding conditions at the Azteca Stadium.

Why This Matters

England remains among the leading contenders for the World Cup title, but the victory highlighted both the team’s resilience and areas requiring improvement before facing stronger opponents.

The Three Lions entered the knockout stage after winning Group L with two victories and one draw, yet questions remained over their consistency after several uneven performances.

The comeback also ended fears that England could suffer the same fate as other traditional powers that exited the tournament earlier than expected.

For Congo, the defeat ends a historic campaign that produced the nation’s first World Cup goal, first World Cup point and first World Cup victory since its only previous appearance in 1974, when it competed as Zaire. The team’s performance demonstrated the growing competitiveness of African nations on football’s biggest stage and suggested it could become an increasingly formidable force in future international tournaments.

What Happens Next

England now turns its attention to a high profile Round of 16 encounter against Mexico, where victory would move Tuchel’s team one step closer to ending the nation’s long wait for a second World Cup title after its triumph in 1966.

For Congo, attention shifts to building on a tournament that exceeded expectations and provided valuable experience for a squad that challenged one of world football’s traditional powers until the closing stages.
